We rented a pontoon boat from Adventures at Sea instead of taking the shuttle. We had 10 of us and with the $30 off coupon from See Magazine it was worth the boat for 4 hours instead of the shuttle. We also had shade with the boat. Shell Island is really a neat place to go. There is a lagoon you can pull into that everyone anchors there boats and you can swim around, there are sandbars throughout so it is shallow and fun to float. The water is not the crystal clear waters is used to be it is more rust color due to all the excessive rains they have had this year, in fact the most rain they have ever had. But even still its worth the visit. Besides being able to search around for shells, walk out on the sand bars and swim, you will see dolpins, pelicans and all sorts of fish. We would definately go back

Been going here since I was a kid. It's ok if you've never been before but it's so picked over for sea shells, it's kind of sad. Take the time and take a drive down the coast to St. George Island instead. Not nearly as populated and the shells are all over the place.

To get a break from the crowds around our condo, we rented a pontoon boat for 1/2 a day & went out to Shell Island from St. Andrews State Park pier. We used the map provided by the park staff that detailed areas in the bay that were good for snorkeling & for finding sand dollars. No such luck; the water in that area was horrible during our visit - like dark, dark tea. We ended up dropping anchor near "the 3 piers," which they had suggested as the best area to get on the island itself. It was a short walk across to the gulf side - brilliant white sand & calm bluegreen water. They tell you there is not any shade or shelter on the island & they aren't kidding. If you are going to stay more than a couple of hours, take something with you for shade, a small cooler and something to keep the sand flies from biting (Off, tea tree oil, etc.). Was worth it to rent the boat, esp. if you have several people who can contribute to the cost.

Undeveloped island across from St. Andrews Park. We've rented a boat and visited Shell Island for sixteen years now. Go early in the day to find shells and sand dollars. Just a very peaceful place. I'm concerned by the amount of trash on the beach during my last visit. Glad I had trash bags on the boat to help pitch in. Anyway, a visit to Shell Island is a must!

We have seen people come back with huge shells in the past but we had no luck. The shells we found around our hotel were just as big. We had a nice cruise out and got to see some pods of dolphin.
