Carillon Beach Resort Inn
Reviewed May 28, 2013

My party arrived on a Friday and checked out Monday. We stayed for the Memorial Day Weekend. The only reason I am giving this place a 2 is because they let us check in early on our first day and also the resort in itself was beautiful. When I made reservations I was told we could be shuttled to the beach because it is about a 5-7 minute walk and is very difficult when you have chairs, towels, bags and coolers. HOWEVER, when I went to the front desk the lady told me that a shuttle is not offered for anyone who is staying at the Inn, but only for the renters of the Carillon houses. We then proceeded to try and rent a golf cart...she then told me we were not allowed to rent a golf cart because we did not have hook up for the electric carts. After all of this we decided to go to the guard gate with our personal vehicle to simple drive to the beach walkway access to drop our things off and drive back to walk, but the guard would not even let us in. He said that we were not allowed to take a vehicle inside even if we were staying at the INN. We were so disappointed. We had to go to a public beach access down the road because it was the easiest thing since we had so much stuff. It was almost like they treated us "less than" because we were staying at the inn and not the houses. The phones inside of the condo did not work and we didn't have cell phone service through verizon. In the 3 days we were there we got no housekeeping services. We ran out of towels and our trash was so full we even had to stack it in the kitchen floor. We had to pay a cleaning fee but yet got NO services. We were told we had to come get towels and take out the trash ourselves. Why do we have to pay for room service?! The lady at the front desk told us that the cleaning fee was for AFTER we left. Although before checkout we still had to empty the trash and was the dishes. My overall experience was NOT pleasant. I would have rather paid the extra money to stay at a roach motel on the beach. It's a shame that it is such a beautiful resort, but yet the service was horrible. The check in desk at the main entrance was much more helpful and advised us not to rent through the ones around the corner (Carillon Rentals). I would love to stay in one of the houses if they weren't so pricey, but I will never stay at the Inn again.

Hello,

I wanted to take a moment to respond to the review you left on the Carillon Beach Resort Inn Trip advisor page and to clear up some confusion.
This page is set up for the Carillon Beach Resort Inn office. We are located inside the lobby of the Carillon Inn. Guests that book with our office receive the highest form of service.
Unfortunately, Carillon Rentals is an office that is here on property and rents a few units inside the Inn. Their amenities package is far less accommodating than the one we offer here at the Carillon Beach Resort Inn.
Guests booking with us, the lobby inside the Carillon Inn, receive several amenities included with their stay. Free golf cart shuttle to the beaches and pools on property, free bicycle rentals, kayak and paddle boat rentals, free wifi in the lobby, in room phones with free long distance, daily towel exchanges and pool/beach towels are always available in our lobby. We also have onsite housekeeping and maintenance that is here daily to take care of any issues that may arise.
On behalf of the staff at the Carillon Beach Resort Inn we would like to offer our apologizes that the other company was not as welcoming or accommodating.
We do hope that you reconsider visiting the Carillon Beach Resort and book with our office next time. We would love to show you and your family our standard of service is what you were looking for.

For the price point this place was a complete disappointment. First there is no housekeeping or towel service. If you want fresh towels you have to go the front desk and exchange your old ones for new ones. The rooms do not have wifi access, but do have ethernet connections. This is quite annoying in the age of tablets and iPads. The front desk is only manned from 8 am to 8 pm. This is really inconvenient for those checking in late or when there are rowdy guests screaming in the room above you at 4 am, such as on our trip. My wife called ahead asked if they allowed pets. She was told no. We get there and there are pets in the hotel. Turns out you can have pets in certain units. Which means we wasted money on boarding our dog. The resort is not directly on the beach, being a good 1/4 mile walk. The pool access was inconveniently locked from one side. At the end of your stay, you are required to clean the room, take out the trash, and put all towels and linens in the bathtub. If you fail to do any of this, there is a handout that details all the extra expenses you will incur if you do not follow the letter of the law. When I voiced my concerns about my stay to the front desk, all I got was excuses and simple platitudes to get me out the door. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

Great location, great view from balcony. Comfy bed, nice that bath sink is not in the same room as tub and commode, so that once can bathe and one can shave! Bedroom is on outer wall where all walk by and the blinds do not shut completely, not a plus. In November many shops are closed, but we will return during the season as this resort is great and has a terrific beach. Coming from South Carolina with great beaches of our own, I have to say that the beaches of Panama City remind me of the beauty and color of the Caribbean and the sand is so beautiful and different from the east coast. I would drive the extra hours to come here rather than ever go back to Myrtle Beach, or the beaches south of Charleston. Lots of beautiful rental houses on the property. My cousin rented a house for the bridal party prep and pre wedding festivities. The wedding also took place on the property. Fantastic place for a wedding. Very beautiful, very well done. Would a solute lay recommend is resort.

This hotel was okay. Everything was REALLY spread out and it was a significant hike to reach the pool and ocean. The heated pool was VERY far away! We were never offered transportation in a golf cart nor were those services explained to us either verbally or in the written instructions. The "lake" it is located on is basically a muck hole...... it is NOT possible to swim in this lake and there is no beach area at all. To use a canoe or kayak you have to work it through the shallow sludge and weeds. The room was pleasant overall, but we found a sanitary swimsuit liner stuck to the window sill and we had to kill a few bugs that were crawling the walls.

The clerk who checked us in was just plain rude and completely unwelcoming. She basically refused to answer my questions and just gave me a map. She was clearly inconvenienced by us. When we asked questions about the "free" bike/kayak use (for 1 hour a day) she gave us one-word answers and did not make us feel like we were welcome to use these services. After taxes and resort fees we were paying over $200 per night and expected just a bit more hospitality for that price.

There is a fitness center just a short walk from the resort; however, there is a $10 per day fee per person for use of the center, which is only open from 9-5 (or something like that). Again, we did not see where the $10/day/person fee was posted online.

We also left a large DVD player behind when we checked out. I immediately emailed asking if they would send it to us, at our expense of course. We were told it was never found. Oh please! It was a larger, silver DVD player left on a black shelf right below the TV.... how could it not be found????

After 2 nights, we checked out and moved to a hospitable hotel at half the cost. The clerk we spoke with about canceling our reservation for the rest of the week was very kind and helpful. Unfortunately when we officially checked out the following day, we had the same unaccomodating clerk who checked us in. I understand that she may not enjoy her work; however, she should remember that many people spend their hard-earned money to vacation and that customers deserve decent service.

The wine bar area was always closed when we were in the lobby area...it seemed rather pointless.

The only positive thing about this resort is that it accomodates a family. The rooms open into a small bedroom with a TV and King bed. There is a small bathroom off of the bedroom. In the middle there is a small kitchen and breakfast bar. There is then a small sitting area with a large fold-out couch and TV. Beyond that is a small balcony. Our 3 small children slept comfortably on the fold-out couch.

Overall, we would NEVER recommend anyone stay here. The high cost, distance from the ocean beach, limited lobby hours, terrible hospitality, and charge for the fitness center make it a poor choice for a vacation.

Room Tip: Room 202 had a view of the lake, but we never so even one person on or near the lake.

I loved this place and its location within Carillion Beach village. Beautiful beach and pools, convenient stores nearby and clean apartment. Also loved the view from the balcony.
We stayed with kids and used the kitchen to cook breakfast and lunch. The Wi-Fi works only in the lobby. In the room you must have an internet cable. We arrived before 5pm so no problems checking in, but we noticed there is nobody after regular business hours. There is a phone and safe box to retrieve the room keys.

Highly recommend it.

Room Tip: No room service during the stay.

Pros ; clean, nice view of lake, good for kids as there is a kitchen and living room. Cons; brown plastic levolor that allowed all night outside hallway light to shine in your face in bed, bedspread and sheet is all there is on the bed (so if it is cold at night, you cannot ditch the germy bedspread), no wireless Internet and AT&T service does not work, almost comatose staff. Will not go back.

Once again Carillon was fabulous! Reading some of the new reviews I am surprised that anyone couldn't love this place! We adore the staff, have never had any problem with bugs although everyone who lives in the south knows that roaches are always around! The staff will ride us in a golf cart to the different pools if we ask and we have always had heat in the hot tubs. We would love to retire to this community! We will go back annually until we can retire. We love the low key atmosphere and enjoy cooking in our room and watching the sunset on the balcony. Love, love, love Carillon beach!
