Description: Are you looking for Ice Cold Oysters in Panama City? Down in Historic St. Andrews, take a wander along the side of The Shrimp Boat down in St. Andrews you will stumble across a little gem of a restaurant. The Salty Hawg has a reputation for ice cold oysters, cold beer and a warm atmosphere. Other more well known oyster bars in St. Andrews often have a waiting list. We serve up the exact same ice cold oysters as they do and there is usually a table available...but keep it a secret.... Inside this nautical flavored, cozy bar you can experience the finest oysters and accompany them by the fun and lively bar crew. We also serve up shareable sized appetizers, soups & salads, Po-Boys and basket meals of Mahi-Mahi, shrimp and chicken fingers. FSU fans just love the Fried Gator Tail Bites but we can't get Florida Fans to try them.

“It Doesn't Get Better!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 15, 2013 via mobile

I am from Panama City and know my seafood. So does Salty Hawg. Part of the sprawling Shrimp Boat complex, this gem is off the main street, down the side of the building. You enter and are immediatelt transported to older St. Andrews, the clientel and staff as diversified as the menu and as salty as the oysters! Several bar high tables and a room long oyster bar with mismatched chairs adds even more flavor. We opted for a dozen Paemesean baked oysters, 2 dozen raw, a cup of gumbo (after being assured it was made inhouse from family fecipe) and split a grilled grouper sandwich, with Key Lime pie finishing off the feast! The baked oysters were covered in shredded parmesean cheese with green onion, garlic, white white and lemon. Baked until piping hot, the cheese forming a layer of saltty goodness. Since heat causes such massive shrinkage in said mollusks, these started today the perfect size, a mouthful with no cracker needed! The half shell beauties were a thing songs are written for!! I (like most locals)are partial to a piece of natures best called fondly the "Appapalach". These were touted as being from LA, and were equal if not better! They had the size we considercorrect, enough to cover the saltine(from your own sleeve laying on table)no overlap, one mouthful, needing no sauce, lemon or horseradish. The grouper sandwich was a 1+" slab of whitemeat fish, grilled to temp with the juices still flowing, a crust of spices, not overwhelming heat, just flavor. Served on specially made hoagie rolls from LA,a homemade remoulade offers the right balance to the sweetness of this fish. Served as a platter with some lovely "seasoned" fries and plastic cups of coleslaw, this can be a small meal for two. The slaw is finely diced with red and green cabbage, onion, celery, carrots and a sweet dressing a suprise is sliced cherry tomatoes, adding another layer of texture and flavor. This slaw is some of the best I have had in a very long time! The gumbo was some of the besst this side of the Big Easy. Although I prefer a seafood gumbo, this anduoille sausage version held its own. Okra, rice, tomatoes, trinity, and a heady brown roux march straight off Bourbon Strret into your bowl. A backheat that settled in early ad hung with you reminded you this is not your mommas soup! We could have stopped here and been completely sated, but the server assured us of the quality of the Key Lime pie, so venture on we did, cup of coffee please! A fresh pot of joe was put on, so the timing was perfect for the arrival of our slab of yummy.A pale color, the sign of a "real" Key Lime pie, this filling was custard thick, condensed milk sweet, Key Lime tart, this pie rivaled its tiny island namesake for great! The crust was made from oatmeal cookies, putting a great spin on this pie, bringing in an unexpected crunch usually not found in this dessert. We have been to the Salty Hawg many times in the past, and will return many times in the future. If you miss this hide-a-way, you took a wrong turn!

“My new favorite place for Oysters!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2013

Great oysters, CLEAN dining room and no waiting! When I go out for oysters, as a local, it is the best place around to go. If you are an oyster fan, you won't be disappointed.

“better than across the streets bad additude”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

Staff was helpful and kind. Oysters where good. I heard some complaints from our table about grease needed to be drained better on the fried food. Nice view of boats coming in from the days fishing trips. And it was a little pricey.
