My husband and I booked a stay at Hammock on short notice during the middle of May. We have chosen this resort several times over the past ten years and have always had very good experiences. This particular trip was for the most part enjoyable. The weather was perfect. The ocean view was lovely. Staff members were friendly and accommodating, and the overall condition of the resort was fine. That being said, it was almost like we stayed at two different resorts during the course of our vacation.
Our recent stay was definitely interesting. According to various staff it was a very slow week, followed by an almost too busy weekend. It almost felt deserted when we checked in Wednesday. One staff member commented that occupancy was at a little over 20% until the upcoming weekend of Mother's day The resort appeared to be working with "skeleton staffing" for a few days, due to the low occupancy. I'm just guessing about this. The upside was that the pools weren't crowded, nor were the restaurants. Parking in the garage was so easy, many spaces to choose from.
The not so good things: For the first time in my life I asked to be moved to another room after one night. I am not picky or demanding guest, but our initial room seemed as if it had not been occupied for a while and was visibly dusty, as in "dust bunnies" in the corners of the built in closets, TV console, etc. Toiletries were missing from the bathroom, and it was located at the end of a hall next to utility and storage rooms with doors that slammed loudly starting at 7 a.m. We were able to switch rooms the next afternoon with help from a friendly bellman. The room was much cleaner, and the view still lovely.
Then came the weekend with two weddings and Mother's Day. A completely different Hammock Resort appeared. While the vibe was lively and upbeat, the resort was understaffed in areas, such as the popular activity pool, and housekeeping. The wait staff at the pool had a hard time keeping up with drink and food orders, (not their fault by the way) and housekeeping arrived at our room as it was approaching 5:00. We declined, and just asked for exchange of bath towels. I was still feeling positive about our stay, as these are minor issues in my opinion. But...
On our last full day at Hammock, Monday, my husband went down to the main pool where we had been enjoying the adult pool as well as the lazy river, and was told that the pool was closed for "planned maintenance" for two days! The really bad thing is that to my knowledge there was no notice ahead of time to guests. Understandably, there were many angry, disappointed people and families, as the main activity pool is a very popular amenity. We were directed to the Lodge pool, with very limited food and beverage service, which was fine for us. If I had small children, my opinion would have been quite different. And if the pool had been closed for our entire stay, along with the other slight quirks along the way, I would have rated Hammock lower than a 4. Hopefully, if we return, things will be back to what I have come to expect at Hammock.
