“Pretty Good Hotel”
Reviewed July 22, 2010

We stayed here as part of an RCI exchange so its difficult to comment on value, but the hotel is nice. The one bedroom suite is great for a family a four. There is a pullout sofa in the living room and a nice size kitchen. The bathroom is huge and nicely appointed. The city west and south of the hotel can be a bit scary. Not real impressed with Palm Beach, but we've been spoiled by Orange Beach.

I travel to Detroit for business and feel safer. I booked a week through RCI's Last Minute Vacations and payed $250.00 for the week...and feel I over paid. This place is a dump.

This is the type of place where you get 12 of your friends, all cram into a room and party like you are on spring break. The clientele here is the type that save their whole life to come here. Most of these people are hillbillies that are happy to get out of their trailers for the week. They don't know how to behave and act like civilized humans at the pool. Most of the guests where smoking and used the pool as their ashtray.

Be prepared to get raped on extra fees. Rip off #1-$6.00 a day in parking. Rip off #2-$1.00 day for a safe. Are you serious? Some of the best resorts in Vegas don't hit you up for a safe fee. With that said, based on the location and type of people staying there, I can see why they encourage the use of a safe.

If you happen to make it through the ghetto to get to the resort, good luck. We witnessed an arrest right before crossing the bridge to the resort. Tough start to a vacation when you have to tell the kids in the back seat to "duck". I strongly recommend carrying a weapon and wearing a bullet proof vest. Good Luck. Buyer Beware!

We spent a week there with a 17 month old and had a great time. I had requested a crib in the room and it was already there when we checked in. There is a baby pool and a regular pool which was great for us. The beach is right there which is also very convenient. We were up early so we never had a problem with pool chairs but it did get crowded by mid morning. It was also easy to find a chair mid afternoon.
They were fine with you bringing your own coolers and drinks to both the pool and beach where lots of people had their own chairs. The bar at the pool was good to get something to drink or a snack.
We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and it was fine for pancakes and eggs...we never had dinner there.
The rooms were fine, yes they were on the older side but they were clean and every day they took our garbage and gave us fresh towels. They also did a room cleaning once a week.
The valet parking was fine...it really was no big deal to give the guy a dollar the once or twice a day we took the car out. Also, the use of the safe in the room was good to store jewelry and cameras and GPS when we were at the beach or pool.
We had an oceanfront room with a great view and a balcony.
Overall, the hotel is great for families - there were a ton of kids there.

We spent 4th of July week at this resort. The resort occupies an outstanding (unguarded) beach location on Singer Island, which also has good public beaches with lifeguards (Riviera Beach Municipal Beach, Ocean Reef Park , and John D. MacArthur Beach State Park). It was turtle nesting season and every day we saw new tracks -- both new nests and “false crawls” (a “false crawl” is when a turtle comes out of the water and returns without nesting – often scared away by humans looking for them with flashlights – a no-no for anyone who cares about turtles).

The surf was quite strong the first half of the week we were there, with 2 to 4 foot waves. Warning flags flew from the lifeguard towers on the public beach next door (Riviera Beach Municipal Beach), as riptides are a risk when the waves are large. Small children would have required close supervision and all swimmers should know how to react if caught in a riptide. Ask the lifeguards if you don’t know. We swam at the public beach most of the time to take advantage of the lifeguards. By the end of the week, the ocean winds had died down and the surf became much less wild. My family (kids 13 and 11) loved the big surf. The water gets deep pretty quickly, with a drop off just a few feet from shore.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom lockout unit with a direct oceanfront side and an ocean view side. The layout was excellent.

The oceanfront side had a king bedroom, spacious bathroom, decent side kitchenette, living room with sofabed, and balcony. The kitchenette had a small full size refrigerator, two burner cooktop (not a full range), combination microwave and oven, and small dishwasher. We found the appliances adequate, but there was not enough cutlery or dishes (although we had pretty much everything on the unit inventory), so we ran the dishwasher frequently. The no stick fry pan was in rough shape, probably because they only had metal utensils to use with it. There were no BBQ facilities and only two pairs of pay laundry machines per floor (bring lots of quarters and a healthy dose of patience for your laundry).

The ocean view side of the lockout had a king bedroom and a full bath. It had a somewhat smaller kitchenette with a mini (half size) refrigerator, sink, and combination microwave and oven.

The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms quite spacious. The housekeeping staff removed the trash and did a towel exchange every day. The unit had a very spacious safe, for which guests are charged $1 per day. Parking is $6 per day and includes complimentary valet parking, but tips are no doubt expected. I only used valet parking once when no self parking was available and tipped $1 to park and later get my car. About half the parking lot is reserved for the valet parking, so there are times when you might have no choice but to use it (it only happened the one time for us).

In summary, this was an excellent timeshare exchange and we would not hesitate to return or recommend it. There were however, a few concerns.

The unit and furnishings show significant wear. Some tiles were damaged, the windows quite dirty (one oceanfront window was almost opaque with dirt), the patio and patio furnishings dirty, and furniture quite chipped. Neither patio door could be fully secured. The locks would open with a little jiggling, which was a concern as only one had a security bar -- and that would not align with the door. The patio door hardware was significantly corroded, which may have contributed to the faulty locks. I expressed these security concerns at checkout (I took my chances that no one would Spider-man to my third floor balcony during my visit).

During our visit, we called maintenance for a toaster, the refrigerator, and the internet connection. The toaster was replaced quickly with a working model. A puddle continually formed in front of the refrigerator and after two service calls, the problem remained unfixed and we stopped asking. The maintenance guy would not help us with the snail slow internet connection at all, referring us instead to the 1-800 number on the network jack to call the internet provider for technical support ourselves. The internet provider had us run a bandwidth test which revealed that the resort ranked a 0.5 out of 5.0 for connection speed, which he said was typical for that facility. It was the worst hotel internet connection I have ever seen in terms of performance.

We agree with other reviews of the resort that the pool area is too small for such a large resort. It was always crowded. Beware of the mandatory 18% gratuity added by the restaurant and bar. I did not notice this immediately and added 15% on top of my first couple of bills. The waiting staff had a good night on me! I don’t like mandatory gratuities as they take away the incentive for good service.

Some reviews said guests were not allowed to set up their own chairs or umbrellas on the beach, but instead had to pay $30/day for one of the beach company’s setups. That does not seem to be the case anymore. A lot of people, including us, used their own chairs and umbrellas on the resort beach without any hassle of any kind.

The resort indicated they wanted you to raise any concerns with them that might cause you to rate them at less than 5 out of 5. I’m sorry, but as excellent as the location and unit layout is, the state of the units in terms of wear preclude any such rating. We loved our stay and would return, but have trouble rating them higher than a 3 for cleanliness, unit condition, and service (witness the do-it-yourself internet service that only confirmed the inadequacy of the service) and a 4 for amenities and location – 3.5 rating overall.

Arrived a little early and room was not ready but was permitted use of pool and other amenities. Room was ready 30 minutes before check in but sensed an attitude from Reception. Not a very warm welcome! We had a corner jr suite with fabulous views and enough space for a weekend stay. Pool was packed everyday, get out early early if you want a chair but there was always room by the tiki bar and on the beach. Good drink specials! Service on the beach was exceptional and the water, crystal blue. No nightlife unless you are willing to drive.

Just returned from a wonderful week at the Palm Shores Resort and Vacation Villas. Our suite was wonderful, well-appointed, and the resort's on-beach location was perfect. Unlike some other reviews here, we didn't find the resort “dumpy” in the least, but while it was comfortable, in all fairness, if you go here expecting something akin to The Palace in NYC, you'll be disappointed. The resort has its own restaurant which was good, but not excellent. The tiki hut by the pool was fun, but it closes early – 10 Sundays through Thursdays, 11 on Friday and Saturday. Customer service at this resort is excellent - the staff is friendly, helpful, and clearly want to be there. Other reviewers complained about being nickled and dimed by service fees – we liked the in-room safe, and secured our laptops, money, and camera equipment when we were visiting the beach. We also self-parked our rental car, which you too can do, and that eliminates paying valet tips on top of the $6 per day parking fee. We're not big on those beach cabana chairs, so we brought along our favorite beach blanket. I'd recommend a car for exploring, as Singer Island is all about the beach, and there's little else to do there. That said, there are a few things within walking distance... Almost across the street is Johny Longboats which has an expansive menu and lively atmosphere. A few blocks away, the Sailfish Marina has an overpriced mediocre restaurant and a water taxi to Peanut Island, which offers excellent beginner-level snorkeling (you'll need to bring your own equipment). There's a decent beach shop two doors down from Johnny Longboats, as well as a Subway, 7-Eleven and a pizza place. After reading some of the reviews here on TripAdvisor and RCIs website, we were expecting a so-so resort, but Palm Beach Shores really exceeded our expectations. We had a great time, and will do another RCI exchange here again. One thing to avoid is the free lunch or breakfast they try to get you to sign up for. This is really a sales pitch for purchasing time shares. Our first day at the resort we met a woman who already owned a timeshare at the resort - her advice - "I love this place, but don't do the free breakfast and don't answer the phone. They're relentless and the sales pitch itself is pretty hard core."

We had a corner room and the pictursque view was worth the money. The bdrm small but bed very comfortable; large bathroom, small kitchen - no flat TVS - but the Beach is awesome and marine is close by. Not much around the area - but drive to West Palm or North Palm for food in evenings. The Pool is very relaxing and warm - Lisa/Jamie/Michelle - all great pool servers and the Drink of the Day is always good. Nice Pool Bar. Island Grill has good food and daily menus. Live music by pool around noon - children activties.
Room wise - needs something - not a Hilton Grand vacation condo; truly personel preference and we were happy we went and enjoyed our vacation. No wash/dryer in room like Grand - but overall we sleep well and had a great time. Depends on what you want - all Personal preference. This is not one review that isn't - anymore you have to form your own opinions and go see yourself. So - if you want nice vacation at the beach with nice pool, people, beach and lots of boats. I would recommend staying here - great for family with children. If you want LUXURY in room - don't stay here. But if you want a Beach vacation on budget - you will have a great time. Up to you. Customer Service outstanding!!!! Breathtaking Sunrises..from your room.
