Owner description: The park has two ravines up to 120 feet deep with steep banks at 45 degree angles. Unlike common gullies, trenches or sinkholes caused by temporary flooding, the steephead ravine is a permanent feature with a spring-fed creek that never dries up, called Whitewater Branch. The underground water bubbling up cuts into the bank and carries the sand and soil downstream to the St. Johns River. Over thousands of years the ravine has widened and deepened to what you see today. In 1933, this ravine was transformed into a dramatic garden by the federal Works Progress Administration. Much of the original landscaping still exists as formal gardens and an extensive trail system. A 1.8-mile paved road winds around the ravine, offering motorists and bicyclists a view of the gardens. The Ravine Loop is closed to vehicle traffic one hour before sunset, but remains open for pedestrians, bicycles, and wheelchairs. The garden's peak flowering period is azalea season, late January to April. Numerous picnic sites, equipped with tables and grills, are available to visitors. The Roy E. Campbell Civic Center complex features a large covered pavilion, auditorium, and meeting rooms that are available for rent. Located in Palatka at 1600 Twigg Street.
Useful Information: Stairs / elevator, Wheelchair access, Bathroom facilities

Although this park was a lot different than the photos appeared, and not exactly what I envisioned, it is a unique park worth visiting. Instead of a formal gardens, there is a 1.8 mile path that you can drive, walk or run along (we drove) that runs along the upper edge of the ravine. There are multiple pull-off spots to view the ravine and azaleas in bloom. There were several bridges and well-kept areas that were perfect for a walk through the ravine..

A nice park for a walk and to see wildlife. We also took a picnic lunch as there are tables available.

Picnics, events and easy hiking are just part of the Ravines' attractions. Several times a year there are special events that take place that would be of interest to families, couples and singles. If you are a runner or serious walker, this park provides a safe a delightful place to run or walk. It is dog friendly as well.

This beautiful garden in lovely North Central Florida is gorgeous when the multitudes of azaleas are blooming but also very nice the rest of the year. The winding trails can be enjoyed by car, bike or foot. They also have a number of nature activities and talks for both young and old. We have been visiting there for many years in all different seasons.
