We arrived in to Moni after dark as we decided on taking up an offer for a car from Ende airport to Moni after our flight from Labuan Bajo. First off we didn't know this was possible, it is and we paid 300,000rp for the car, which considering the lodge charges a similar rate for a charter to Ende didn't seem too bad especially when splitting the cost. There are loads of drivers outside the airport gates, be prepared to haggle down from 500/600k.
The only room left at Bintang was one of those that seems to be literally in the family living room. Not in the new 2 storey set on the right ( if you stay here go for those rooms they looked like the walls were brick and much cleaner).
We've stayed in several home stays throughout Indonesia ( this isn't a review that doesn't understand the concept of a homestay as many we have frustratingly read) however the noise in the morning was simply disrespectful. I'm talking people sitting on what were supposedly our rooms porch chairs having a full on conversation at 6.00 am. The noise of children getting up to go to school is understandable but the seemingly paper walls provided no sound protection whatsoever for the long mornings of shouting and telephone conversations literally steps from our window. The owners did show in the evening an understanding of us going to bed and never kept us up at night, but the mornings were just a little too much especially with them knowing it affected us.
Furthermore the room could have been cleaner, the mattress was old and sinking, me and my partner ended up in the middle of the bed, making a rather uncomfortable nights sleep. Considering we were only paying 150k and the staff were friendly (although make sure you know how many people are sharing bemo up to kelimutu before you book, we thought it was 250 for the bemo not 250 for 2 people, ended up sharing with one more person but still paid full whack????) we weren't expecting much for the price and the views were fabulous and the walks around Moni just as good. We could've looked past the places shortcomings but On our last morning we found pairs of socks left out of our bags full of nibble marks and wholes stuck in a small whole in the terrible MDF walls. The noises we had been hearing at night had in fact been rats. One pair of socks down, we let the owners know of their problem, no apology just a shrug and a gesticulation. I am told rodents are a problem in general in Moni, but hardly the best way to end an already iffy stay. The food served in the cafe is average, stick to the Indo affair for the best choices.
Bintang Lodge is lucky it's in such a beautiful location, with a stunning landmark nearby, otherwise this would have been my first terrible review. As it is it's my first negative one. Make sure you chose a new room, not one in the family living room or look elsewhere in Moni.

We had one of the newer rooms up the top - very clean and spacious, good views of the rice paddies below.
Very friendly staff who rent scooters, arrange guides for trekking and of course the trip to see the Kelimutu lakes - the reason to come to Moni!
We stayed a bit longer than the 1 night most guests seem to stay and got to know the area - breakfasts were good.

Room Tip: Choose a modern room up the top, bit pricier but worth it. The older rooms can be a little dingy.

M husband and I wanted to have lunch at Bintang Lodge in August 2013. We were the only customers. From my table, I directly looked into the outdoor "kitchen", or in any case the place where the food was prepared. I saw how a very scruffy dog (that most probably never got treated against worms) was licking and eating from the dishes and pots, right next to a woman who was sitting on the floor and washing dishes in a bucket. I politely told the owner, thinking he was not aware of the dog. He only said: "Oh, you don't like dogs? Don't worry you will get a clean plate". We were not convinced and left the place without eating.

Our family very much enjoyed our stay at Bintang. Hearty but simple food and kind staff. Our children loved hanging out and playing cards with the staff and children of Tobias's family. We liked the fresh, slightly cool mountain air in the evening and loved our hike up to kelimutu. We heartily recommend Bintang Lodge - Billy was great with the boys and Tobias was friendly and helpful.
