This campground is wonderful if you are camping with children. Majority of sites are semi-shaded. Multiple restrooms offered. Very kid friendly.

“Good day out, worth a visit at least once”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

We visited this park in Jan 2013. Entry price was only a few dollars and the ranger advised that there were nesting eagles and scrub jays to see and which trails to follow for each. We parked up and saw the small lake where you can swim if you want to although the Beware of Gators sign might make you think better of it! We did the path to the Eagles first and nearly missed the nest as you can only get as close as 600yds so even with a good zoom lens we could just make them out. There were plenty of campers on site ranging from tents to the huge RVs they have in the US.
We did the path to the large lake (green trail) but found this was not always clear and that you would come to a point where the signage stopped and you had two routes so we got a bit lost! Eventually finding the lake, it was nice to get some shelter from the sun but we did not see any wildlife there at all. On the way back we took in part of the Scrub Jay route (blue trail) but again didn’t see any birds.
Paths in the main were uneven/sandy so cycling would be harder in places and more suited to walking.
It was a nice park to visit but if you are on vacation it is possibly a one trip experience. I imagine if you were local then it would be suitable to visit more often.

“Oscar Scherer State Park and Scrub Jays”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2013

Oscar Scherer is a small Florida state park of of scrubby flatwoods, and is one of the best locations to encounter the endemic Florida Scrub Jay. There are fifteen miles of trails through these beautiful natural areas provide opportunities for hiking, bicycling, and wildlife viewing. Visitors can also Canoe or kayak along South Creek, a blackwater stream that flows to the Gulf of Mexico. Canoe and kayak rentals are available.

There is a small spring fed lake (fed by a spring full of sulphide water!) and the lake has a rather dubious reputation of having one of the first recorded fatal alligator attacks in Florida back in 1973.

However, most people come to this small park to see the Florida Scrub Jay. These gregarious little guys, are more likely to land on your head to beg for snacks. These jays are only found in Florida and although they are quite friendly and curious, they will only nest in the specific type of scrub found at Oscar Scherer, which, unfortunately, is also ideal for land developers. Check with the park rangers at the visitor center and they may give you suggestions where you might encounter them, and please - don't feed them!

“Peaceful pleasure:)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

This is a great park to visit for many reasons. There is a camping ground, picnic areas, bike trails, walking trails, canoeing, outdoor swimming & bird watching etc. I love to go on a long walks seeking out the many trails which are color coded for different mileage. I spend a lot of time on the White trail as I get to see many of the beautiful birds including Florida's famous Scrub Jay:) Just a note, the Scrub Jays are very friendly & don't be surprised if one lands on your head! I met this couple once whilst on the path & they thought I was joking until one popped unto his head! They were able to 'snap' the moment:)
The Blue Trail is a little tough because the sand is quite deep so you have to plough your way through some of it but it will give you a workout! There is also a Red Trail & a Green Trail to check out. I tend to visit on quite times of the year as Holidays are a little too busy & noisy especially the 4th of July.
This place is a great inexpensive excursion ($2.00 without car) if you just want to relax & spent time taking in what nature offers:)

“A bit of old Florida natural habitat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013 via mobile

This is the third year in a row that we have been ca mping at Oscar Scherer. Major attractions include the Florida Scrub Jays - an endangered species found only in Florida. Proximity to a bike trail, terrific beaches and the Sarasota cultural/art scene, plus Venice gives OS a big leg up over much more expensive camp grounds. The campground is very vlean and well cared for by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers. OS also has a lot of fun activities including folk music and nature walks plus various social activities. Only negatives include poor wi-fi reception and lack of full hookups for RVs. Overall, I'd rate OS as one of the very best State or County parks in the country.
