Royal Floridian Resort
Ranked #10 of 29 Hotels in Ormond Beach
Reviewed February 16, 2010

We've stayed at the RF many times...in March, and during the Christmas holidays. The beach location is wonderful, the heated pool and deck area are pleasant w/ plenty of chairs & towels, and the staff is courteous and efficient with our requests. Little staff turnover in our 7 years of frequent stays. Nearly all rooms overlook the beach/pool deck. We love using the outdoor grills and appreciate the nearby shops and groceries. The beach is great for walking and is in a nice area, as the RF is the most northern hotel on Daytona beach and adjacent to some upscale single family homes. Basketball,mini-golf & shuffleboard on the oceanfront deck. Wi-fi & computer in the lobby. Parking (a bit tight)is in an underground garage. Laundry is on alternate floors. Our only complaint is that the RF does not currently have a restaurant on site...even for breakfast. However, a short walk up the street, Billy's Tap Room is a wonderful restaurant specializing in grouper and we LOVE Gennovese's pizza (they deliver to the RF). We've enjoyed the Royal Floridian with friends and teens, but find it to be a friendly place as well when we travel alone.

I stayed here the week after Christmas with my husband and his family. My mother-in-law used her RCI points to book. She choose the hotel due to availability (we wanted an ocean front property during a busy travel week) and the indoor pool (we were traveling with our 5 and 2 year old nephew and niece.

With the mixed reviews on this site, plus the less than enthusiastic reports from people who had been to the Daytona area, I was not expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised with the Royal Floridian and Ormond Beach.

What I Liked:

The location: Ormond Beach was much less touristy than Daytona. There is a local population that gives it a homey pleasant feel. There is a beautiful park next to the Ormond Museum that I walked in every morning. There are lots of great local restaurants-we enjoyed Betty's A1A cafe and the Sub Shop in the plaza next to the hotel. There are also some fun boutique stores, but I didn't have time to shop there.

Size and Layout of Rooms: The rooms were the biggest RCI rooms I've ever seen. They are very well layed out, with a master that can be rented as its own unit, plus an ample kitchen and living area. The master and the living room have ocean views.

TIki Hut: When the outdoor pool was open it was very nice and had a Tiki Hut that served tropical drinks. Occasional trivia allowed you to win drinks.

What I Didn't Like:

Construction: They had started work on the building next door. Every morning around 7am we could hear the alarms of the trucks backing up. What is worse though, is that they were clearing the sand out and placing it in front of the hotel. We lost direct beach access and had to go out to the street and around the hotel to access the beach. Laying on the pool deck, any wind picked up the piles of sand surrounding the pool and blew it all over you.

Balconies: The balconies were really aging and a huge eyesore.

Cleaniness and Responsivness of Housekeeping: My sister-in-law spent the first couple of nights on the pull out couch. The sheets had holes in them and she felt like she was getting bed bug bites. When she asked housekeeping to change the sheets they refused. She begged for new sheets and the women gave them to her but said that she wasn't supposed to do that. I later saw lots of mosquitos in the room, so I won't accuse the hotel of having bed bugs, but their response to her request for new sheets was ridiculous.

Indoor Pool/Hot Tub: The indoor pool is in a terrible location. It has no views of the ocean (while the video game room does) and faces right into the front lobby. When we used the indoor hot tub (there is no outdoor hot tub, another flaw) people coming into the hotel passed right by us, and most people chose to look in. It was like being in a fish bowl. Not fun.

I liked the area enough that I might stay there again if they made a lot of improvements. But with so many other places in Florida, I don't see any reason to.

We stayed at the Royal Floridian as an RCI exchange. My husband and I treated my daughter and her 2 girls while they were here in Florida on vacation. The location was right on the beach and was gorgeous. The unit we had was the sleep 6 privacy 4. It had 2 separate sections off one main foyer. .The one my husband and I stayed in was a king room with bathroom and refrigerator. There was a slider leading to our private balcony. You could lay on the bed and see the ocean..It was breathtaking.

The other unit off the foyer included a kitchen living room with pull out bed and a separate bedroom and bath. The slider in the living room led out to a second balcony.

The property included an indoor pool and jacuzzi in addition to an outdoor pool which was only steps away from the beach. There were activities for the kids to do arts and crafts and the staff was very helpful and polite.

I highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a great place on the beach in Florida. I would have gone again this year but RCI has a once in 4 year limitl.

Just returned from a week in a two bedroom fourth floor end unit and we had a great stay. The location is oceanfront, there is underground parking, across the street from a strip mall with TGIF's, Outback and a great little restaurant for breakfast, Peach Valley Cafe. Walgreens is also across the street.

Everything was there that you could possibly need: laundry facilities, stamp machines, coin changer, two computers, big screen tv in sitting area, small indoor pool, hot tub, very clean and warm outdoor pool, Tiki Bar, kiddie pool, mini golf, gas grill, patio tables for dining and more. Ample lounge chairs and plenty of clean towels daily. The staff was great. No problems whatsoever. One day our door lock didn't work and it was literally two minutes until they had service there and the lock was completely replaced.

We were traveling with a 3 and 7 year old and if you are looking for a "kid friendly" hotel that has scheduled activities to keep the little ones happy and busy, this is the place for you. We had a 2b/2bath unit with a kitchen with lots of floor space (not a galley kitchen) and a large master oceanfront bedroom with private bath. My only complaint would be the living room furniture was uncomfortable, as is the case with most, if not all, ocean front properties we have stayed as the concerns about sunscreen on upholstery, etc. but I must say that was the only complaint. Didn't spend much time in the living room anyhow. There are three tv's, one in each bedroom which was nice and one in the living room.

The most important issue with me is safety for me and my family and there was even a security guard on the premises. Everything was clean and far expected my expectations after reading some of the postings.

The only negative is they will be closing at the end of the year for a multi million dollar expansion (52 more rooms) and renovation of the deck areas which took a huge hit over several years with storm after storm and the installation of a larger pool to accommodate the increase in guests.

This location is quiet but Daytona Beach is probably just 4 miles down A1A and that area has definitely become more upscale since my list visit.

Be sure to visit Ponce Inlet Park and walk the lighthouse. Incredible view.

Final word: Don't hesitate to book. You won't be disappointed. Our family definitely will be booking at this location again.

Located on the north end of Ormond beach, All units 1 and 2 bedrooms are oceanfront view. resort has hugh warm inground pool , walkin at one end to 10ft deep in deep end, fish shape, as well as a small kiddie pool right in front of the beach only 50 ft away from the ocean. Accomadations are very nice although some bedrooms are small.
Many resturants all within a 5 minute walk, granada plaza across the street with Outback.TGIF.Peach valley cafe and a nice icecream shop, also across the road a little south of the resort is Stonewood steakhouse, Julians and LULU.s and Billys just past the plaza on the southside.
The resort has a internet room inside beside the elevators and also a fair size indoor pool and whirpool. Mall shopping is in Daytona Beach about 15 minutes south of the resort (Volusa mall) across the street from the Indy 500 speedway.
You won't find a nicer location for a beachfront resort, new/clean safe area for walking around. Located in a richer area of town with multi-million dollar home to the north and along beach rd either side of the bridge.

Once again the Royal Floridian has made our vacation one to remember. When we arrived it was just like meeting old friends, they made us feel at home every minute we were their. As last year we attened 2009 Daytona Bike Week, the loacation to all the activities is great. We found new places to eat, new roads to ride and met new friends. They have around the clock security to keep you and your car and motorcycle safe. Infact the entire area is well lite and safe to walk. The underground parking is a big plus to keep your bike clean and dry. Pool was nice and warm squeeky clean and open till midnight. Just like last year the staff at The Royal Floridian made our stay go to fast.
Due to a major renovation project in 2010 the resort will be closed for most of 2010. But we are looking forward to 2011 when the resort will reopen to a new look.
