Just returned from 7 nights at Disney All Star Sports resort - we stayed October 19-26th. I'll be upfront in saying we booked this hotel only because of the free dining plan that was included and it was not our first choice in Disney properties most specifically due to the bed options being only 1 king or 2 doubles.
Check in was smooth and quick although we arrived at 1am so it wasn't overly busy, nor were there many people milling around the lobby at that hour. We were provided with our wristbands and my daughter's 1st visit button and we were off to bed.
The room was quite small. Two adults and a 4 year old and we were very crowded in the room to say the least. There are only king & 2 double bed options available - no queens. If they put queens in there, there would literally be no available space in the room to move. We made the doubles work although it was tight sleeping quarters. The room was clean - Disney bedding, pictures, soap, mickey ears towel design on the bed upon arrival. The towels were so soft - I'm not sure if we got a new batch but all week our bath towels were unbelievable - the softest I've ever had in a hotel. Housekeeping kept the room in tip top shape. The bedding was comfortable as were the pillows - with varying degrees of firmness. The fridges however have been pulled out of all the rooms due some recall - some people were notified, we were not. It was inconvenient but it is what it is - not all hotels have fridges and I would assume they would do their best to accommodate someone who really needed one. Again, just another thing for some people to bellyache about - no fridge - boo hoo. Room temp was adequate as well - nothing new - set your thermostat. Not sure about this motion sensor another writer spoke of - our room was cool and comfortable every day we returned to the hotel and it was hot, hot, hot.
We paid for the preferred section as it was recommended by another person who visits Disney often - which is in building 1 & 6 (surf building) - good call on that. Close to the lobby and transportation. Well worth the money as far as I'm concerned. The resort is huge and the rooms at the back are really quite far away from the main building and the bus area. However, as the restaurant is closed, if you're in the back section it's a very quick jaunt over to All Star Music were you can utilize the food court without worrying about the shuttle. We walked from building 1 and it took 10 mins so it's very close. The rooms I did find a bit noisy as there is an outdoor walkway in front of each of the rooms and you will hear foot traffic and people talking as they go by. We also hear toilets flushing in other rooms but the pressure in that flush scared the heck out of me the first time so it's bound to be heard in other rooms. As far as people noise from room to room - none - neither side to side nor up or down.
The food court is under renos so they have a grab and go. Decent selection for pre-made stuff. Bread, bagels, danish, muffins, sandwiches & salads for lunch - drinks & dessert including ice cream bars. The area was clean and well staffed. There are options for everyone - for those who complain due to dietary needs or self imposed restrictions such as a vegetarian there are limited options but that happens everywhere - they cater to the majority and there is something for everyone, there just may not be a large selection. As well there is no arcade as the grab & go is set up in this area but again, you can use the other all star arcades for your tokens.
Bus transportation - I just can't say enough about it. From the airport shuttle to the shuttle to the parks and the shuttle to & from the other all star resorts for the restaurant - fantastic. Why anyone would want to stay off of Disney property and fight traffic and line ups is beyond me. Service was fantastic, drivers were friendly and helpful and we never waited longer than 20 minutes at the most and that was a very rare occasion where we had obviously just missed one.
The pool is open quite late - in fact, I don't think it really ever closes. The lifeguards blow the whistle at 11pm saying they are off duty and to swim at your own risk but people were in the pool well into the early hours of the morning. Our room faced the pool and we heard no noise at all from swimmers on any of the nights we were there although our pool didn't seem to be overly busy. There was no noise from the movie under the stars as other writers have suggested - unless you're outside or at the movie itself. People are watching the movie, not making loud noise - and the movie itself is only loud enough to be heard for a couple of rows of chairs. It was not heard in our room and we were very close to it.
The meal plan was great as were the new wristbands. We ran into a slight problem with the pin on my husbands wristband and it was fixed immediately by staff. The food at All Star Music was pretty good. The eating area was crowded as others have stated but no more crowded than any other food court. To suggest it was bursting due to the overflow from our restaurant being closed is ridiculous. It's Disney people - it's just that busy. We took the shuttle over a couple of times and each time there were under 10 people on the bus - 10 poeple doesn't add chaos to an already busy place. The food was of good quality - better than I expected for a quick service cafeteria style restaurant. Good selection as well. The only thing I didn't care for was having to stand in multiple lines for food - burgers one line, quesedillas another, etc etc. By them time you got all of your meals, the one you got first was cold.
Overall, I would recommend this resort and I would not hesitate to stay here again. It is good value for the money and after all, how much time do you really spend in your hotel room anyways. Clean, affordable and comfy - what more can you ask for. We have stayed in many places. in many countries and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this resort. People just need to have more realistic expectations. If you have a complaint - lodge it with the resort - they'll probably fix it before you feel the need to lodge your complaint in this forum.
