This was our third ever character meal at WDW, and probably the most underwhelming. We booked on the day, whilst all other character meal were booked solid all night, we could have any a reservation for any time we wanted here. The restaurant is beautiful and you do feel like you're in a special place when you enter. The food is average. The waiter recommended the buffet for us all, and we duly obliged. Whilst the buffet was just about adequate for the adults, the childrens choices were poor, there was a good choice of desserts though. The real draw here for us was the character dining. We got Goofy and Pluto and we managed to get the autographs and a few photographs. We felt that the place lacked the usual WDW spark and would recommend Chef Mickeys for people who want a good time, I don't want to here the cutlery on plates or the clinking of wine glasses at a character meal. Goofy and Pluto were certainly in the wrong place here.

We stayed at the Swan so the first night we had a dinner at the Gulliver's. It was a nice way not to "lose" a day and feel like you've started your vacation on a high note. We had a reservation although I am sure they would have been able to accomodate us regardless because although busy they weren't packed. The characters there were lame! They had the monkey and the meercat from the Lion King. They didn't arrive till 6:30 (our dinner reservation was at 5:30pm - they should have told us!) and even then they only took approximately 2 minutes with every table (enought for snapping the pictures but not much more) before disappearing. My 2 year old daughter was crying because monkey was leaving and he didn't even look back.

The food at Gulliver's was simply not good and we're not picky people. The meal was expensive (ran us around $60 for two adults, the kid was free). We had all you can eat seafood buffet. Don't let that fool you. The buffet had only salmon and shrimp as far as seafood goes. Here is the kicker - the shrimp were not peeled! I've never ever seen non peeled shrimp in a restaurant. We were both surprised and knew right away they purposly did it that way so that the guests would eat less of the most expensive thing on the menu. With a 2 year old crying over a monkey who's not coming back, try peeling 10 shrimp on your plate and getting full! The salmon was served by the "chef" behind the counter (all the other food is self serve). Well I saw the chef disappear and he did not come back for good 20-25 minutes. Other customers were just skipping salmon, but rude as I am I just leaned over the counter and helped myself with a large piece. Again, it reflexs poorly on the restaurant.

Our waiter at the Gulliver's was very quick but busy, but didn't offer us free refills and didn't warn us that coffee and tea are not included in the price (but soda is), so we ended up ordering coffee we didn't really want and paying for it dearly. If you go to this restaurant make sure you ask for the gallery (upstairs) seating because the peripheral (lower) seating is awful and the characters sort of forget that you exist.

The kids food table was ok. The mac'n'cheese is awful in any Disney restaurant - they figure they need to please parents and not too many parents bother to try their kids food. It doesn't have any cheese in it, or maybe it has some "powdered cheese". But chicken strips were quite good. The adult food (lots of salads, roast beef, salmon, shrimp etc) was very bland and boring, nothing to write home about. We tend to like our food flavorful.

The desert table was the highlight of the visit. They had this strange creme bruilee with rasberry topping on top that was acquired taste but delish! the chocolate cheese cake was quite good too. Overall we'd go there again ONLY if we're staying at the Swan and are so wiped out that we can't make it to any other place on the Boardwalk (which isn't likely because everything is just minutes (of very pleasant walk) away and we're not lazy people :))
