Our hotel concierge recommended Roy's and it ended up being one of the best dining experiences we've had! Our waiter, James, made the evening extraordinary. He was incredibly personable and a lot of fun. From the time we opened the menu and saw the customized "welcome" with our party's name to the end of the evening when we were provided with a ride back to the hotel in an SUV (instead of the taxi we requested), this was the best dining experience we had all week. It was like we were celebrating a special occasion, but we weren't!
As we reviewed the menu, we were brought a bowl of edamame, perfectly seasoned. After deciding what we thought we wanted, James provided us better descriptions as well as suggestions of some of the menu items. We were pleasantly perplexed as to what to order, as everything sounded so darn good. We ended up with the spiced pork ribs appetizer....sooooo good! Hot, wet towels were provided with this appetizer. Did I mention how good these were?
For the entrees we had the andouille-crusted snapper and macadamia-crusted mahi mahi--both very good. The chef is from the South, which was evident from the southern touches on the menu and the side of tempura okra I had...very good! Dessert consisted of chocolate soufflé and the bread pudding. The bread pudding was the only item that was "just ok". After the meal, the restaurant manager? came by to ask if everything met our expectations, to which we answered in unison that it EXCEEDED our expectations!
We loved Roy's so much that two nights later after eating a very disappointing meal at a nearby restaurant, we walked to Roy's for dessert. Although the restaurant stops seating at 10pm and we arrived at 10:20, they still agreed to seat us since we were only there for dessert. We asked for James, but he had already left for the evening. Being the end of the night, there was a noticeable difference in the level of service we received from our previous experience. This night's waiter was almost dismissive and not in any way personable. The same restaurant manager did not come by our table at all, but did visit other tables. We waited for him, but he never acknowledged us. We watched as he came back out with jacket removed and proceeded to what appeared as counting the night's earnings. We were the last guests to leave for the night, so I suppose the staff was just anxious to get off work.
I would definitely visit again, but only if James is working!
