I stayed at this hotel a few times from 2003-2009 and finally getting back to Orlando after a number of years I decided to visit again after staying at Homewood on our last trip. I saw from this website some improvements had been made and mentions of room were being refurbished (only 2 years after the public spaces!) Well the public areas have been refitted but you can see this was done on a budget with public toilets looking the same, badly painted over wood and signage and furniture in the extended bar/restaurant which looked like chairs from a brothel! They are awful black fake leather with metal studs, not very Crowne Plaza.
The rooms are the same as they always were but times have moved on so they are dated in design with plastic bathroom fittings, lights that buzz, lack of worktop space, and no microwave in our room which today is a given even in the cheapest of hotels. Based on the public area refurbishment I can tell any room refit will be done on the cheap and not be to my tastes. The rooms as always are well maintained for their age so the walls are well painted, carpets are free of stains and furniture wasn't bashed up so the maintenance team are doing a great job. The beds had been replaced as noted on a card and they were comfy, shame the room had no recycling can and on checking at the back area they only have a compactor showing the hotel recycles nothing which is disgusting for 2019.
Now breakfast, the old restaurant I remember is now like much of the public areas (Games room/Resturant/pizza place/second store are all now meeting areas) a conference area so the bar is now the restaurant which makes for a cheap nasty breakfast area, we got a free one but don't pay you will get better at Golden Corral and that place isn't great! The coffee pots were so old and basked, the cups didn't match, barflies in the cream jugs and flying around, messy and unfilled food areas, poor choice and poor quality. Really do not bother with breakfast.
Now to the major issue we had which was cleaning or lack of! The hotel is just not as clean as it used to be or as clean as budget hotels such as Hampton and Homewood. The lift doors and buttons were the first things we noticed was dirty, they use to be wiped all day by the public area cleaner who used to also clean the outside areas but the glass tables were filthy with overflowing ashtrays that hadn't been cleaned in days, same with the tables we noticed the same stains 3 days in a row! The gym shower and lockers had the same discarded bottles for days, in the end, I threw them all out myself!
The room cleaning and replenishment was poor and inconsistent. Some days we would get 2/3/4 of each towel. Some towels were new and sometimes old, the floor was never vacuumed, they used a sticky roller! The bathroom toiletries sometimes a full set left, sometimes part or nothing and the same with coffee pods. Now we stayed 10 nights so 5 nights in we left the card on the bed to change the bedding as I had searched myself and a little blood mark had appeared on the sheet plus it was warm so we wanted fresh sheets, I came back from the pool and noticed that the bed was being made not changed and the card had been placed to the side, as the maid saw me she instead of pulling the cover back onto the bed picked it up and carried it out which made me think straight away the sheets hadn't been changed as the old bedding wouldn't be still on the bed. I left and when we came back, sure enough, the sheets had the mark on them and cover had been replaced as we could see the cover had been unfolded from storage so was new. I complained to the front desk as asking for fresh sheets after 5 days is not unreasonable (we know they didn't change them automatically previous to this by the feel and the fact they were creased from sleeping). The front desk agent Chousa? I think her name was lovely and polite and arranged for the bedding to be changed the next day and the room to be cleaned.
Overall I would not stay here again, the aged design is fine but cleaning is critical and housekeeping needs a strong leader with enough budget to ensure that standards are maintained. Either they have poor management or budgets have been cut. We even noticed in the business centre the seats were full of dirt and the carpet hadn't been cleaned in weeks it was so bad.
We paid less than a budget hotel that's why the score isn't lower but I would rather stay in a newer budget hotel and pay more as at least they clean the place well.
