This was the second time I went to the Prickly Pear. the first experience was fabulous. Chile Relleno to die for. Hadn't had one that good since Border Cantina shut down in Winter Park many moons ago. Last night, however, the Chile Relleno first came to the table obviously burnt. Why they let it out of the kitchen...who knows. The place wasn't busy. The second time it came out, the batter had been fried to a thin crisp, on the edge of burnt. The insides barely done. The battered chile I came for was a big disappointment. The duck quesadilla, average. I had a better one at Tijiuana Flats earlier in the week (for $7 cheaper).. One of the other diners had the duck breast, which came out without the bacon it was described as having on the menu. After inquiring about the bacon, the waiter brought out a small ramekin of bacon from the kitchen for him to sprinkle over the duck! The two other diners enjoyed their choices. I don't know what it is about the Funky Monkey group of restaurants. They start out FABULOUS and then lead to disappointment, almost appearing to an experienced chef at the beginning and then leaving the cooking to an untrained kitchen staff. Same happened at the Funky Monkey and Bananas. It is too bad. Orlando diners so crave the non-touristy non-chain restaurants.
