“not the best!!”

We have just returned from 14 nights at AKL .We have been going to Disney world for almost 15 years and have stayed in the majority of its hotels from All Stars to the Yatcht club. We stay on site mainly because of the convenience to parks etc, and we enjoy the whole disney experince. AKL offered neither! There are hotels outside disney that are closer in time and distance to the parks .The african theming was done so well it really did not seem like a disney hotel (which is great if you do not like the whole disney thing, but then you should stay outside disney and save yourself a lot of money). Like many disney hotels it was dirty, usually after complaining disney are very good about getting your room cleaned, but not here. After 4 nights and 2 asthma attacks (dust allergy) we were moved to a "clean room "which was marginally better. By dirty I mean stained carpets, thick dust on bed frame ,head board, tables etc, even the telephone and hair dryer were sticky. Drinks had been spilled on the chair and bedside table, fridge had not been cleaned, we couldn't unpack our cases because the drawers were filthy, there was also body hair on bathroom floor. We were told by staff that disney are having a huge problem recruiting cleaners at the moment , maybe until they sort this problem out they shouldn't charge so much for their rooms. The hotel was also 60% english at least, yet it is one of the few disney hotels that does not sell english newspapers. Restaurants however are very good ,espicially Boma, probaly the best buffet in disney. Nice pool area , well maintained, but the piped music which you could not get away from was dreadful ,the same songs were repeated constantly, which might explain why it is one of the quietest pool areas in disney! Even though the pool area was quiet the english guests still got up early and put towels on sunbeds! This is one Disney hotel I would not return to, for convenience I would recommend yatcht and beach club and for cleanliness pop century.

Our family of three spent five nights at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in early November and were enthralled with our accomodations. I had made the reservations in January, but as the time drew near I grew apprehensive based on the wide range of reviews about the property. I am happy to report that the staff was very gracious and engaging. As Sarah checked us in, I mentioned that this was my son's 16th birthday trip, and she presented him with a birthday button - a very nice gesture. We have travelled extensively and found our room on the Giraffe Trail to be very clean, well lit, of comfortable size, and appropriately decorated in the African theme. Knowing that we were not going to be spending a great deal of time in our room, we did not chose to spend an extra $200 to have a savannah view room, and that proved to be a wise choice.

The gift shop was a great place to pick up souvenirs and the Mara was a good option for a quick bite. We appreciated the large coin-operated laundry rooms as well.

We will definitely return to the Animal Kingdom Lodge in the future and highly recommend it to others. It is off the beaten path, but that was a plus in our opinion.

Early November is a fabulous time to visit DisneyWorld. The crowd level is low and the weather is perfect. If you're going to DisneyWorld, make sure you purchase a copy of "The Unofficial Guide to DisneyWorld" - what a great resource!

We just returned from five nights at AKL and it was a wonderful experience. There were four of us in a savannah view room so it was a little tight space-wise, but the attractive furnishings, cleanliness, helpfulness of the staff and the animals roaming peacefully just below the deck more than made up for the lack of an extra few square feet. A savannah view room is a MUST!

Our superb dinner at Boma was a delightful surprise after the mediocrity of the food in the parks and in Mara, the fast food place at AKL. Don't pass this one up! The lobby is fantastic and the gift shop is a treat. We spent way too much time and money in there. Do take time to sit by the outdoor fire pit and chat with your fellow travelers, preferably with refreshment in hand.

Highlights: Too many to mention in detail.
Lowlights: "Heated" pool a bit chilly for my taste. No covered or indoor access to fitness area.

We've traveled throughout the US and Europe and this property is among a handful at the top of our list, a strong recommend.

Well I originally took the plunge over a year ago and booked this holiday well in advance - it wasn't cheap but I hoped it would provide a 'lifetime memory' experience for our family, the downside in booking so far ahead was that our expectations were hyped so high the experience might struggle to match them!

We arrived at the hotel late at night after a delayed flight and a misdirected road journey and found the front desk staff helpful and friendly, we were efficiently and accurately directed to our room which we reached after a reasonable walk. The rooms reflect Africa - if you are expecting the bright shiny offerings of Marriot, Hilton or Radisson look elsewhere, the lighting and decor attempt to offer authenticity and so can appear gloomy, get in the mood you will soon appreciate it!

Open the drapes to be confronted by zebras grazing in the simulated moonlight about 25 yards from your window -the effect was to cause us to speak in whispers to each other to avoid scaring the animals.

The beds were comfortable, the plumbing was efficient, housekeeping was efficient and friendly, the hotyel staff were very helpful and efficient. The restaurants were excellent, try Boma, the buffet meal may seem initially expensive but look around Orlando for similar value and you can certainly find cheaper meals but add in the quality factor and you will find this restaurant is a secret bargain. Try new things, enjoy the steak, fill up on your favourite.

Mara offers a canteen type service, my wife fell in love with the butternut squash soup ( takes all sorts), if you are staying longer than a weekend it is worth purchasing refillable cups from here at a cost of $11.99 each as refills of coffee and soda are free for the duration of your stay. The African stew served in a bread loaf is well worth a try too.

The Victoria Falls bar on the mezzanine floor is largely forgetable, there are no draught beers and the place has little atmosphere, with barflies watching TV sport above the bar and tables being arranged cafeteria style in the remaining space.

Would I recommend it to you? Yes but bear in mind it has a strong theme which you can't escape.

Would I go there again? Based on this experience 100% yes.

What could be better? This hotel attracts a lot of people who are full of their own importance and sadly their precious children too - the sound of whinging kids is never far away but I have no suggestions to offer to improve this. The valet parking costs $7 a day and attracts people who delight in parking and loading/unloading directly in front of the hotel entrance, might not seem a big deal as you read this before your visit but believe me at the end of a long day trekking through the parks with sore tootsies diverting around a VIP SUV can seem a step (or two) too far.

This is easily cured though - go to your room look at the animals, be they zebras, cows, gazelles or pelicans send the kis to fetch coffee from Mara and you will soon chill.

Have a great experience - you are only here once!

We agree with the previous review in every way especially the fast food dining experience. It doesnt however illustrate the frustration of being given a bleeper and a two hour wait in order to sample average food at double the price of any other Orlando restaurant. The buffet breakfast is ok but again overpriced at 50 odd dollars for three people (after a 20 minute bleeper wait, after reserving a time) maybe go for the croissants from the fast food place by the pool instead. The proximity of the hotel is good and transport good, however, kissimee where we stayed 7 days previous was equally convenient by car and we got a two bed aprtment pool etc for a lot less money, plus food at local places was much better value. Interesting experince but you feel ripped of from the moment of entry to the momet you leave. I am a disney cynic however and would rather spend 2 weeks in calcutta that 2 days at disney (regardless of the hotel). The animals were nice though and the kids seem to like it.

  • Disliked — a rip off start to finish
  • Tips/Secrets — stay in kissimmee and drive, much better value.

Stayed at this resort the second weekend of October (went to the Food and Wine Festival at Epcot), and really enjoyed my stay. The lobby is spectacular, and the rooms are very comfortable. Double sink (huge plus), very comfortable beds, and wonderful balconies with views of the animals (saw a giraffe from our balcony). Ate at the resturant the first night, because we got in late, and the food was excellent. Service at hotel was top notch as well. I would highly recommend this resort for anyone. One tip though - try to get a room as far away from the elevators as possible. It can be loud, if you are staying close to them.
