“Magical stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

Absolutely wonderful stay at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge! We couldn't afford a Savannah view room but during online check in we requested that our Standard view room be an Obstructed view of the Savannah. We were able to get it too! It was amazing to see all of the animals.

During our stay we had a refrigerator that leaked all over our floor. We called maintenance and he thought it was because we had blocked a vent in the fridge. He cleaned up the cabinet and left. Later in the afternoon we came back and there was more water. We spoke to the concierge about the issue and they moved us to a full Savannah view room.

The hotel was beautiful and the entire staff were very helpful. Just a wonderful wonderful trip. Highly recommend!

Room Tip: If you can't afford a Savannah room try to request a room with a limited or obstructed view of t...

Overall the resort was impressive but spent very little time there. We were on the first floor and paid extra for the pool view and due to the lush landscaping we could only see a small corner of the pool. We arrived two hours before check-in and our room was ready which was a big plus but our luggage arrived four hours later (be sure to take a carry-on). When we opened the refrigerator door there was a big sign that said "out of service." The front desk told me all the refrigerators had been recalled but after talking to several guest it seemed that mine was the only one not working. I voiced this to the front desk and they offered me a cooler but told me to check back because they were out. lol We managed without! My granddaughters enjoyed the activities at the pool but we spent very little time at the resort. I was impressed with the transportation and we had no problem getting to and from the theme parks. Magic Kingdom was about 15 minutes from the resort. Disney Express was wonderful they picked us up at the airport and delivered our baggage to the resort and when we checked-out everything was taken care of at the resort (checked our bags and printed airline tickets) and they had us at the airport with time to spare. We stayed six nights and the majority of our time was spent at the theme parks. My granddaughters loved the bunk beds and the four of us were glad to have double sinks.

This place is a little pricey but a must do. Love having a balcony to watch the animals and enjoy the weather. Surprised that they didn't have any wait staff for guest poolside. Didn't care for the foam pillows as I prefer feathered. Was glad I read the review saying to request a room closer to the elevator. Staff were very nice and friendly. Loved the animal guides they had place around by the animal viewing locations to answer any questions and to inform guest of their African culture.

Room Tip: Request a room closer to lobby/elevator with a view of the animals. Too high and the tree tops block...

Entering Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL), the enormous and spectacular lobby of Jambo House sets guests up for a great experience. The rooms, though, do not live up to the lobby's presence. They are crowded -- oversized furniture in a fairly small space and the dark wood and textiles sap light from the place. The doors, too, were quite plain -- like a regular house, not exotic as expected. Of course, we spent little time in our room and the darkness did help us sleep better.

As to our specific room, there were three problems. The king size mattress was definitely in need of replacement. The mattress itself was coming apart at the seams and every time my husband rolled over, the springs beneath him made that "sproingy" noise that rightfully belongs only to Tigger. Secondly, the doorway between living area and bedroom area was covered in little kid handprints -- perhaps sunscreen? Kind of gross. Finally, the rubber cover for the kitchen sink (disposal) was missing. I was surprised that they'd allow such a safety hazard and quickly imagined my kids reaching in to grab something that fell down the hole only to get cut. The disposal was repaired immediately, though.

As to the savannah view, we anticipated seeing giraffes, zebras and okapi for weeks prior to travel. We never saw an okapi. The zebras made shy appearances peeking out from behind trees now and then. The giraffes showed up our 5th night, after dark, and were gone before sunrise -- so no pics. Otherwise, we saw a few birds and horned cattle. Mostly, we saw the lobby windows of Kidani Village and not much more. If you really want to stay at AKL, save your money and get the standard view. You'll only see animals from the public overlook.

Also note:
1. This is a sprawling resort -- expect to walk far just to get to the lobby.
2. During our stay, a number of elevators including the one closest to our room were broken down. The one by our room was broken the first three days of our stay. We used the stairs.
3. If purchasing the Disney Dining Plan, the free drink cup is great -- except if your room is far from Mara. We have two teenagers and sent them to get coffee in the morning and late night beverages. It's that long a walk!
4. Bus service to the WDW parks and Downtown Disney (other than Animal Kingdom) is slow. It took us more than an hour (including the variable wait time) to make a trip to Downtown Disney. Our journey to the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios all took at least half an hour -- not counting wait times of up to 25 minutes (July, 2013). The resort is not convenient to the parks at all!

Positives:
1. The pool is amazing -- especially the interactive children's pool area at Kidani Village.
2. Boma is the best restaurant in all of WDW (our whole family agrees, even the 9 year old). Excellent food, service and staff!
3. The resort is quiet. We could hear little kids thundering around in the room above us, but that was the only noise we heard.

I've been to Disney many times (30?) and won't return to AKL.

Room Tip: Save money and get a standard view room. If you really want a savannah view room, specify that you w...

It was nice to wake up open your toom curtains and see anamals right outside of your balcony! Staff was very friendly, and helpful. Beautiful large rooms. The common areas were beautiful also. Have to visit the fire side chat and look for animals at night with night vision glasses! During the day they have African experiance drum demonstrations, and yes you too can play them. It was an experiance my family will never forget. The garaffs were so cool.

A fantastic hotel, staff very helpful and food lovely. From the moment we arrived we were in luxury. Rooms are very spacious. We travelled with my parents so we had two adjoining rooms overlooking the savannah. Watching the giraffes when not visiting Disney or other theme parks was breathtaking. The two room had plenty of room both had king size beds to loose your partner in. One had two and there was still plenty of room. The other had bunk beds. Africa is the theme, the shop has lovely souvenirs. Would love to go back. Maybe one day. We have been away since to another country but there was no comparison!!!

First, it was easy to get to the resort from the airport on the Magic Express; short lines & short wait get going. Then, very welcoming staff came out & greeted us by name as we got off the shuttle, then sat with us in the lobby and went over check-in paperwork & where everything was. Concierge made sure we had reservations/tickets for everything we needed. So friendly, so helpful, above and beyond. Loved our room overlooking the Savannah-there are many viewing areas around the lodge to view animals & birds, with very knowledgeable guides to answer questions & tell stories-but to be able to see giraffes at all times right off our balcony was awesome! Dinner at the buffet restaurant was a good experience in trying new cuisine, but very pricey and I wouldn't pay that price for picky eaters,or eat there twice. I enjoyed the huge pool while my hubby enjoyed the pool bar before dinner. This is a beautiful lodge with great service, and we love watching wildlife so this was a perfect place for us to explore, then relax, for the afternoon and evening before going to Epcot the next morning. They held our bags the whole next day after we checked out, while we did Epcot. This was likely a one-time experience for us (due to the high cost of all things Disney!) and it was so worth it!
