It may look like some mere megachurch to some, but Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine is a dream come true for Catholics like me - and it has been that way for nearly 16 years! I visited that wonderful place for 12 years and it's just magnificent from the first visit. Here in Florida, where I live one hour away from Central Florida's religious crown jewel, this is the best Marian shrine I visited in-state! The surrounding scenery - the fountains, greenery, and flowers - is breathtaking, but step inside the sanctuary and be awed by the dazzling stained-glass windows and the glass-rod crucifix. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel is equally good too. If you have the chance to visit this property, please see the Museum and the new Pilgrimage Center (I haven't been there yet).

If you Catholics are traveling to the Orlando area or if you want just peace and quiet, then the Shrine is for you.

Oh, and didn't I mention that it's just minutes away from Walt Disney World?

This is a beautiful church near Disney World. We stayed at Port of Orleans, French Quarter, so it was nearly 5 miles away. The priest is very welcoming. If you are a small group, there are usually cabs looking for fares after mass. I'm so glad we made the effort.

This Catholic Shrine provided a nice calm diversion from our otherwise hectic days in Orlando. It's a beautiful shrine to Mary with several options for finding a place to simply rest and reflect. Others have already described its various features in the next few postings, so I won't repeat. While especially appropriate for Catholics, it's also good for non-Catholic Christians as well. We were not there on a weekend, so we did not attend Mass there -- but perhaps that was a good thing ....... as there was no distraction from the serenity there. If this type of attraction is generally interesting to you, then you will not be disappointed.

If you are Catholic and a tourist in Orlando this church is an excellent way to celebrate Mass. There is overt fund raising but not in a way that is off putting. The church is beautiful and quite inspiring coming from England where churches are empty as this Mass was over flowing with people from around the US and the world. It is a great and representative slice of America being surrounded by friendly, open people with a similiar faith celebrating in a welcoming and positive way.

The shrine is peaceful and inspirational. It is a quiet place to feel closer to your own mother as well as to the church. Even non-catholics will appreciate the respectful and loving tributes to mother and family. Go on Mothers day and rejoice in your roots of love and faith. It is not Disney so don't expect entertainment. You actually have to do the work yourself. Read the pamphlets. Walk through the gardens and reflect. It is worth it. The only reason I didn't rate it excellent is because children might not understand or appreciate it. They will last 10 minutes and be bored and ready for to move on.
