“Nice place for our family”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

We are a family of 5 with 3 kids ranging from 11 to 15 y/o. Our check in went smoothly, for the most part. I requested a different location from what we were originally given right off the start because our room requests were overlooked and I didn't want to take any chances with the location. They quickly obliged and we ended up right next to the turtle pond pool, which was quite convenient. Room was a great size for our family allowing all of us to spread out and get some separation time when we got hot and tired from a day of trudging around the parks. Unit was clean, well stocked with all we needed for eating breakfast - which was all we ate in the unit, and well tended to by housekeeping staff. Regarding staff, that is where I will put my main complaint comment... too many staff that don't "habla" english. Housekeeper would just smile and nod and say "towels?" A couple of the guys running around on the golf carts we tried asking something of couldn't really understand us, and one lady working at the customer service counter who was of middle eastern descent I believe was hard to understand unless you listened very closely. None of these people were crabby or anything of the sort, they just weren't very helpful because they couldn't communicate. I'm probably going to review the parks too and comment on experiencing the same thing. To me, if you are going to have an employee out mingling with the general public, they should at least know some basic english. Otherwise, we had a very nice stay and would definitely stay here again. Was a nice, quiet place to relax when taking a break from the parks.

JUst got back from 2 weeks in Orlando staying in the Old Key west. Had 1 bedroom suite which was very spacious, separate kitchen, spa bath, balcony and loads of room for the kids. Only criticism was the sofa bed was not particularly comfortable so would suggest getting the 2 bed apartment if your budget can stretch to it. Cleaner left us fresh coffee for the filter machine and cleaned room every day. There is even a washing machine & separate dryer so for the first time was got home with most of our holiday clothes cleaned.

It really is a "home from home" which coinicidently is what the staff say when you return from a day out at the parks "welcome home!".

The swimming pool had a water slide, Gym on site and childrens entertainment area next to the pool with staff to help keep the kids happy (not that you will get much time to spend at the hotel pool!). Only issue was that our room was a few minute drive to reception as it is a very large complex, we did ask could we have somewhere closer but there was no availability. The walls are quite thin in the rooms so if you get a noisy neighbour I would imagine that would be annoying but we had no problem.

We booked this early so got a good price which included the disney dining plan. As this is a higher grade hotel this also gives you table service rather than just fast food (quick service) that you get with the moderate hotels. Make sure you book your restaurants in advance as we witnessed people being turned away on a regular basis who hadn't made reservations. Would recommend Raglan road in downtown disney, planet hollywood and Rainforest cafe.

Overall this was a fantastic trip to disney (best yet and we have been 5 times to Orlando) and I would strongly recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Ask for one close to the main building

My in-laws recently took our entire family on a Disney Vacation! We stayed at the Old Key West Resort which is considered a Disney property. There were 15 of us total and the group ages ranged from a 1 year old up to a 67 yr old! The resort is nice for families or large groups as the rooms are setup as Villas. They are definitely a little 'dated' but I know that they are not trying to have a modern or contemporary feeling- they are going for an 'Old Key West' type of atmosphere. Although dated, the rooms were clean and all of the staff was friendly and very nice. We had 2 families in our Villa and it was able to accomodate with 2 bedrooms, a kitchnette, a living room area (this had a fold out bed), a balcony, and even a washer/ dryer. For people who enjoy to go on vacation and be able to cook or wash laundry in the room this is a perfect setup for you- When my husband and I travel (granted- we don't have children so this is probably a biased view!) we prefer NOT to have a large kitchen and a washer/dryer b/c the point of us being on vacay.. is to NOT have to cook or wash laundry! :) The resort itself is charming and they do have a fun pontoon boat that takes you to the downtown Disney area which is really quite nice- but overall getting around the resort is NO easy feat. They do have a desingated bus stop near each of the Villas that will take you all around the hotel (and to all the Disney parks)- but you have to wait at least 10- 15 mins to catch the right bus. One of the days we decided to walk to the main lobby/ pool area and it took us over 15 mins to walk. They do have golf carts that drive around and if you are lucky they might pick you up- but for the most part you need to rely on the bus transporation for inter-resort transportation. The food at this resort is just ok but there are many options in Downtown Disney which is just a short boatride away. We had the Disney dining plan and my favorite meals were at the Boardwalk Hotels, the Polyensian, and Downtown Disney. Overall I would not have chosen to stay at this hotel as it is not my style. We typically stay at modern/ contemporary hotels. There are times I will stay at a less modern resort due to location- but even the location at this resort was a good 25- 40 mins communte (between waiting at the bus stop and selecting the appropriate bus) to get to a Disney theme park. I had a great time on the trip with my family- and I shouldn't really complain too much for not having to pay for the room or meals- but if I was spending the amount of money that my in-laws spent- I would want a more modern resort with newer ammenities that was closer or had easier access to the Disney theme parks.

Although it looks old it's actually a nice place to stay. Very quiet and it's close to downtown disney (you can even take a boat ride to downtown disney instead of taking the bus).

I was here in January 2013 and i thought my stay was alright. You are not going to find modern and trendy decor in this resort. The rooms are spacious and it was clean, although the towels were a bit questionable (then again you can always ask for fresh towels).

Overall, the hotel is cute, swimming pools are just okay nothing special.. but if you're in disney world, would you really utilize the pool? You'll probably be spending more time at the parks.

I do like that this property has a lot of trees and it's close to the river / swamp area -- you do feel like you're in FL.

I recommend this hotel for families as it has it's own restaurant which is decent and you can rent movies, play games and do art crafts in the recreational area.

It's funny the Old Key West resort (part of the WDW Vacation Club) is one of the largest resorts they have and yet it has an unbelieveable feel of being small. Very homey feel with the villas. My family stayed in a 2br and it was incredibly spacious. They have a central area where the pool-hottub-restaurants(2) -store - check-in- fitness area are all located ! Looks like a small town in the keys. There you can also take a boat to the Disney shopping area by way of small canals. Rent (free) volleyball-shuffle board- bags- and yes they also roast marshmallows at night.
Back to the room it was decorated brightly. Recently refurbished and very comfortable. Large balcony for morning coffee. There are only a handful of buildings with 3 stories but the view was worth the climb. Certain buildings come with elevators if you need that.

We checked in on Friday, June 1. Our two bedroom (non-lockout) villa was ready at check in which went smoothly. The cast member who checked us in was thorough and provided the details we needed to make our stay as enjoyable as it could possibly be.

We stopped at Gurgling Suitcase for our traditional start of the vacation libation. (We've been DVC members since 1996). The drinks were fine, but the bar tender was struggling with the kegs that were delivering foam and not much else.

The villa was clean and mostly contained all that it should. It did not have paper towels (we had a roll in the car, fortunately) nor did it have the detachable (disposable) cleaning pads for the floor cleaner. No problem, we weren't that messy. There was no baking sheet this time either, which could have been a bit of a problem, but ended up not being an issue. One of the plastic containers for storage was missing too. However, all in all there were no serious issues with the villa.

We were there for Gay Day and for Star Wars Weekend. We enjoyed both special events, although it was extremely hot and humid. (Well, it is Florida after all)!

We chose to bring all of our food this time and eat all our meals in the villa. It worked out beautifully. We had breakfast in the early morning before leaving and then when it became unbearably hot we returned to the villa for a late afternoon meal. We have pretty much given up on dining with Disney. The food quality has fallen off sharply since the inception of the Disney Dining Plan, and service has followed the decline. We understand the reasons, we just don't care to subject ourselves to the chaos that is now dining at Disney. We have a snack and some drinks while in the parks but no longer spend the bulk our food dollars on Disney food. It works out beautifully for us!

The Gay Day gathering in MK was nice to see. Granted, not all Family were wearing red, but it's still heartening to be in a place where so many Queer Folk are gathered enjoying themselves in the main stream. Wouldn't it be great if every day were as inclusive?

Star Wars Weekend has changed and we didn't enjoy it as much as we have in the past. There isn't as much involvement as in prior years when Storm Troopers were on the roof of the entry gates and the whole experience was much more immersive. It was too hot for the child with us to wear his Jedi costume, but he was ok with that overall.

Our checkout was smooth and simple as it always is. We were packed with the car loaded and out of the villa by 10:00 am.

We really enjoy most of the DVC resorts at WDW (with the exception of Board Walk Villas) but Old Key West is our favorite. It has the largest square footage for any of the villas (studio, one bedroom, two bedroom or grand villa) and you can park right in front of your villa instead of having to park what seems like miles away and schlepp everything through lobbies, etc. We love the big enough for two jacuzzi tub in the one bedroom and larger villas, as well as the full size separate laundry room. It's great to be able to return home with clean clothes!

Should you need an accommodation that can sleep 8, then Old Key West may just the solution for you!

For the money you spend, the service should be great, but it was not. i did on-line check-in and said i was arriving at noon. got there at noon and was told my room was not quite ready, needless to say not quite ready to them meant after 4. the room itself was called a deluxe suite which is stretching the word deluxe. this is the worst experience i have had at a disney resort and i will never come back and stay here.
