“An awful dining experience”
Reviewed April 11, 2005

Three of us had an awful meal there. The "Collage of Duck" was virtually inedible; the salad was limp and swimming in dressing and the foie gras was inundated with what appeared to be blueberry pancake syrup. Only the Kessler Collection Cabernet was what you would expect from a restaurant with these prices. Service was marginal, at best. This is not a Day's Inn. Every meal must be outstanding, even if it is Monday night.

The Westin Grand Bohemian in downtown Orlando, Florida, is *the* alternative to kitschy Disney motels in the crowded tourist corridor. This urban grand hotel is the epitome of art and design, displaying a valuable art collection in public areas through the hotel, and prints of these same works inside individual rooms. It has a private rooftop pool in the center or Downtown Orlando and two Bosendorfer Grand Pianos (1 in the Jazz bar, and another upstairs). The lobby contains an art gallery, Starbucks coffee, Jazz bar, and five star restaurant (also full of art). The main attraction for the hotel, is its location (within walking distance of all of downtown Orlando), its decor (vibrant and risquee without being weird), and an amazing restaurant. I dine here frequently, typically ordering an array of gourmet appetizers as my meal: Baked Brie in Philo, Blue Cheese Wedge Salad, and the Spring Salad in Pear dressing . . . all amazing. Last note of interest, is that on Friday evenings after work, the jazz bar is crammed with young professionals (bankers, lawyers, and financiers) from surrounding businesses. For music, art, cuisine, ambience, and vibrant southern cosmopolitan culture, the Westin cannot be beat.

Wow ... just wow! I've travelled far and wide and stayed at some nice hotels, but this one is definately one of my favorites. The hotel doesn't feel like a hotel ... doesn't look like a hotel ... and, above all, doesn't smell like a hotel!

The rich woods and materials used throughout the hotel are very non-typical.

I could live there.

That's what my boyfriend said when we got there. Hilarious! It really is an awesome hotel. It's very "adult" - don't bring your kids here and spoil it for everyone. The decor is dark and exotic. The bathroom awesome - especially one small detail - the shower curtain rod bows away from the tub, so it never touches you. Brilliant! Room service was superb at both 2am and 9am. I didn't hang out in the bar downstairs, but it was hoppin' on a Thursday night. Valet parking is $19/night...kind of steep, so just be prepared for that. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that my "final" bill included a room charge even though I redeemed my Starwood points. This was an obvious error that I brought to their attention. They said I wouldn't be charged, but I haven't received a copy of the bill in the mail.

I stayed at this hotel in December 2004, and I agree with a lot of the positive and negative reviews of this hotel. On the positive side, it was a beautiful hotel, definitely up to the usual Westin standards. I liked the subdued lighting, and the art in the room, lobby, and hallways was a nice touch. In addition, I got the room on Priceline for only $99/night!

The negatives: the neighborhood is definitely not a place to hang out. It consists of office buildings, pawn shops and tatoo parlors. The hotel definitely is designed with this in mind... you have to walk through the valet parking area to enter the hotel from the street. Also, the only parking at the hotel is valet parking, and it's $28/night. However, if you are willing to walk a few blocks from a nicer neighborhood, you can park overnight for free. Unfortunately, they start checking the meters at 8 am, so you will have to put in some quarters in you want to sleep in! ( a quarter gets you 15 minutes, most of the meters have 3 hour limits).

Overall, if you get a good deal I would stay here... this is the best hotel that I have stayed at in the Orlando area. However the location leaves much to be desired, and valet parking fees can add up.

My husband and I have traveled all over the world and stayed at many excellent hotels. We found the Westin Grand Bohemian to be just as wonderful as the other hotels around the world that we love. The service was first class, everyone was friendly. The resturant and bar are wonderfull. The decor is elegant and warm. There is not a lot to walk to , but if you are looking for some nightlife without Mickey Mouse you are in luck. Two blocks from the hotel there are many bars and clubs that are packed on the weekends. Like the other reviews say, this is also a great spot to see some NBA players! A team was staying there the same time we were! Our stay here was perfect and I would highly reccomend it to anyone who is looking for a fun, first class place to stay without the kids!

Read all the wonderful reviews here, and checked in for a week in December 2004. Very disappointed -- it's a typical Westin, with a very comfortable Heavenly Bed, but with three real weaknesses.

First, the rooms are really dark -- with all the lights on, it's still like being in a dimly-lit drawing room. It's nice to have the ambience, but it would be better to at least have the option of being able to see when you wanted to.

Second, and more importantly, there's one small air vent at one end of the room, and the air just doesn't circulate. There was a strong burning-plastic smell in the room that never went away the whole time we were there, even with the fan set on high.

Third, downtown Orlando is a ghost town, and as a result, this hotel has nothing attractive in walking distance. That, along with the poor air quality and dark rooms, means that you'd be far better off staying in Winter Park near shops and walking streets, or in the Disney area where you'd at least have a nice view out the window. Personally, I wish we'd stayed at the Westin Swan near Disney -- still would have had the Heavenly Bed, with cheaper rooms and a much nicer atmosphere.
