“A Mixed Bag - Not Really a 4 Star Destination”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 16, 2013

We used the HRH as our base for a 10 day visit to the Orlando Recreation Area. Located right next to the Universal Parks it was at the Northern end of the International Drive resort area and about a 30 min drive from the Disney Parks. Although we had an enjoyable stay we all felt it slightly missed the mark as an exclusive destination as the comments below show.

Room

The room was quite basic chain hotel fair with little in the way of unique HR features and no theming at all. I have been in bigger Holiday Inn or Marriott rooms for half the price. The minibar was as expensive (water $7.50) as other reviewers have stated with small print adding another 25% to the cost of each drink (we didn't have any). The bathroom was a low average decorative standard with tiles around the bath only an a pea-soup green paint job. Movies were $20 a throw. Internet was an extra $14.95 a day.

Room Service

We tried to order room service pizza but despite being advertised we were told we would have to collect.

Common Areas

These were nicely decorated in the HRH theme with lots of Rock based artefacts. However some of the Elvis gold disk pictures had mould in them which is sure to be a problem. The Velvet Bar was dark, small and uninviting. Corridors were bright and cool but the carpets were worn and dirty looking; in need a refresh.

Pool

The pool whilst large was a maximum of 4ft 9in deep in a very restricted area; this made it useless for adult swimming but probably great for smaller kids; we didn't use it. Pool side cabanas were $180 a day.

The Kitchen Restaurant

Decent food but nothing special.

Fitness Center

This was the first time I have ever been charged by a hotel anywhere to stay fit (US or Europe). Even the Willard next to White House in Washington didn't want money to stay healthy.

Universal Express Ticket

A really good deal for this element of the package - no queuing in the two parks.

Parking

Parking was an additional cost.

Overall

The theme should make this hotel, but we felt it missed that star quality that the marketing pushes; we have certainly been in better 3 & 4 star hotels.

We decided to stay here for the last 2 nights of our two week stay as it was our 15th anniversary. It was certainly breathtaking pulling up to the hotel in the morning, and we were amazed to find our room was ready at 7.30am! Bell services brought our luggage to the room and the nice man ran through a few pointers about the hotel which is when we found out that they do not offer free in-room wi-fi. We stayed in four hotels for this holiday and this was by far the most expensive but was the only one not to offer free wi-fi. On top of that there is the $18 per night parking charge which seems a bit excessive.
The room itself was lovely and we loved being so close to the parks and not having to use the car for a few days. Having the front of line passes meant we could get loads done by lunch then head back to use the hotel pool. This was lovely and warm and we all enjoyed using it but I found some of the poolside games a bit noisy!
We didn't eat in any of the restaurants but did get an ice cream which was amazing! Overall I loved staying at this hotel and would love to visit again in the future.

Stayed 3 nights. Rooms OK, staff OK, location for Universal excellent. Hour in early for Harry Potter good. Hotel Very expensive for what you get. Front of line pass good but Universal also sells these and pushes them hard so still had some lines. Not sure would stay again

The staff have great attitude which makes this Hotel, very much a can do attiude or give it a go..room nothing special just the normal 2x large double beds but all good providing your family get on...great touches like film in the pool every night...

The other great plus you are minutes away from Universal and you get a free fast pass to all the rides..and an hour early which means you can do Harry Potter land well in advance of the crowd.

Food at the Kitchen good, and the market place is good for on the go breakfast, fruit , toasted bagel etc. Of course all top end cost but good value compeared to other City Walk places.

Great Hotel..

Went to the Hard Rock Hotel for our 35th Wedding Anniversary. We are not "True Rocker's" but since the Hotel was so close to CityWalk, we thought we'd check it out! We had tickets to see Blue Man Group, which is in CityWalk. It took us less than 10 minutes to walk from our hotel room to The Blue Man Group Show. That would be my most favorite part of the Hard Rock Hotel. Less than 10 minutes to CityWalk (Blue Man Group), Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. Our room was nice & cozy for the 2 of us. We were on the 5th floor over looking the pool and the roller coasters in the distance. The housekeeping staff were the friendliest employees of the Hotel. They greeted us all with a smile and how are you everytime we saw them. We went down for breakfast at The Kitchen. It was $19.50 per person for the breakfast buffett. We ended up driving to Denny's where it was a lot cheaper. You will also be charged $18.00 per night to park your car in the hotel parking lot. That just doesn't seem right to me!
Not sure if we can afford to go back again.

This hotel is clean, fun and in a great location... Laid back atmosphere, always playing good music everywhere you go! Express pass is included which saves you money right there!
You have the option of taking a water taxi (which is every 10-15mins) or a short walk to the parks/city walk... Makes for a stress free vacation!
