“Best off-site hotel when visiting Universal Orlando parks”
Reviewed December 22, 2011

The Doubletree at the entrance to Universal Orlando is the best hotel for visitors who aren't staying at one of the three on-site hotels. We got up in the morning, had a good breakfast buffet at the Pompano's restaurant in the Doubletree, and walked 10 minutes to Universal Studios. No need to spend time driving and parking in the morning, and the Doubletree let us park all day in their lot while we were at the theme park at no extra charge. The Doubletree pool area is nice for kids if the weather is hot, although it isn't a fancy pool like the on-site hotels. But the on-site hotels cost roughly three times as much as the Doubletree so it's a good option for families visiting the Universal Orlando parks.

Room Tip: Our room facing toward the courtyard was quiet

Visited in December for a short family vacation, visiting Universal Studios and other area attractions. The carpet was stained and showing age. Decor in the common areas shows quite a bit of age.

Late night partying in adjacent rooms interrupted our sleep. Although the hotel is right across from Universal Studios, it does have small convention facilities and this drew an eclectic group of visitors during our stay.

There is no concierge in this hotel, the front desk staff are not knowledgeable about area restaurants. They have a concierge for Universal Studios, which was somewhat helpful. Our Universal concierge was not well-trained.

Parking is available on site at an additional cost. In-room wi-fi is available at additional cost.

The breakfast buffet (the only meal we sampled) is varied and good. Pricing is hotel expensive, roughly double what we paid at a local Perkins per person.

We will not return.

Came down from Toronto with my girlfriend for her birthday from Dec 8 to Dec 11. The purpose of our trip was to visit Universal Studios as my girlfriend hasn't been there in 15 years but for me it was my 6th return to Universal so I've stayed at quite a few different hotels everytime in Orlando.

We did not rent a car as reading reviews from this site indicated that parking is roughly $12 per night and since we were only there for 4 days and most of our time would be spent at the parks. As other reviewers mentioned the only reason why they charge for parking is because some guests in the past that didn't stay at the hotel would park in the parking lot, and by charging for parking it reduced the number of non hotel guests parking in the lot.

The taxi ride to the hotel is $45, so round trip would $90.

The hotel was absolutely beautiful. Everything was really well decorated for the holidays, and the staff are extremely nice and sincere. They allowed me to check in early at 12:00pm and upgraded our room to the Universal Studios view (if this is free take it, but not worth the extra charge from city view). Upon arrival we were offered the famous Doubletree cookies and everyday we were there we would go to the front desk and ask for more and they were happy to give it to us.

The room was extremely spacious with a LCD TV, washroom was clean and we had a couch as well. The bed was really comfortable and the cleaning staff were really nice. There is a fridge in the room which is hidden in the cabinet underneath the TV. There is also a safe for your valuables.

We did not visit the pool or the restaurant - hence I cannot comment on it. There is a starbucks in the lobby which is really convenient for those early mornings.

I don't know what other reviewers are saying but the hotel is EXTREMELY close to Universal. The walk took between 10 to 15 min MAX to get to the Universal grounds. There was a shuttle at the hotel but we never used it. This is truly the most affordable and closest hotel to Universal.

We also took the I-trolley to the outlet mall which is relatively close, but the trolley times are not the greatest. We also used the hotel's cab service which is comparable to the meter taxis.

In all this hotel made our visit to Orlando and Universal Studios are trip to remember and I will definitely be back.

The only negative is the hotel charges for internet service but you can access free wifi in the lobby.

*Tip: The time after thanksgiving and before the christmas holidays is the best time to visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the higher floors away from the elevators. Also if possible ask if there can be a...

Stayed here for 2 weeks. It's a nice hotel with large rooms and friendly staff. Brownies on checkin were a nice touch. Rooms were big and clean with great views from the upper floors. TV had cable so I dodn't miss my favs shows!

On the downside they charge for parking, which is a joke.

Would stay again providing I didn't require a car.

We stayed 5 nights in November for a conference and we were totally disappointed. When we checked in, it was like standing in line at the airport (Very busy). When we got up to the desk we felt as if we were just another #, not a guest. And that is how we felt the whole time. The room was dirty and the toilet ran. I called to complain and they came to fix the toilet many times and never got rid of the running water sound. It was infrequent so they were never there to hear it. There was spots on the carpet and on the sofa that I had to show them before they cleaned them. It is interesting that a guest has to tell them to clean the carpets and sofa. Is that not the hotels job? The food at the conference was just okay. The breakfast restaurant was lousy. The room furniture is totally dated (very typical of the Hilton chain - on this trip alone we stayed in three different Hilton hotels and they all had outdated furniture - Stop spending all your daddy's money Paris so he can update our rooms!)
The only things that were good about this property was the pool and the location.

I would recommend that you choose another hotel! There are a lot of choices and even if you have a conference here to go to, it is still worth it to stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: Stay at another hotel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My class and I stayed here for our senior trip. Being from a small town, we all got a pretty big kick out of it. The rooms were nice and the staff were very friendly. We all enjoyed the cookies very much :) We never ate at the restaurant, but made excellent use of the pool and hot tub. It's a very short walk to Universal and the path you have to take is beautiful. It's also close to T.G.I.Friday's, Kobe, and a Wal-greens. Very convenient! If given the opportunity to go to Orlando again, I will definately consider staying here!

This hotel was clean, stylish, functional and in a reasonable position. It says it is at the entrance to Universal but it's still about a 20 minute walk to the park, a pleasant walk though. The pool area was nice and the hot tub was open till late. The room was great, with everything you might need. There is a TGI Fridays and a Golden Corral nearby but our favourite was the Ale house which was reasonably priced and had a good atmosphere and good food.
The iRide bus is mega cheap up to International drive, we even managed without a car by using the bus and shuttles that the hotel provided.
The fact that the hotel car park has a fairly high daily fee adds an unwanted cost to your holiday. As does a bit of a shock deposit that the hotel demanded of about £300 either cash, credit or debit card to cover additional costs, we booked through Virgin Holidays and we did not know about so be prepared!

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! I’m happy to hear that our service and our great amenities made your stay more comfortable. Our guests love the convenience of the I-Ride Trolley. We have contacted representatives at Virgin Holidays to make sure that they are making their customers aware of the deposit needed upon checkin. Hope to see you again soon. Cheers!
