Disney's Wilderness Lodge
Ranked #32 of 340 Hotels in Orlando
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 29, 2004

We stayed in this lodge for one week in August and had a great time. It was our first trip to Mickey's world so before going I poured over this web site and books to decide where to stay. Despite what previous reviewers have said about their favorite hotels, WDW uses formulas, they are basically very similar. The key to happiness in Mickey's world is to remember that all of the hotels are illusions-the Grand Floridian is a pretend upscale hotel, the Wilderness lodge is a pretend woodsy lodge, etc-so there are not huge differences across the hotels within category-base the decision on where you (or your kids) think it would be most fun to pretend to be-tropics, africa, etc. None, for instance, are as upscale as you might expect given the cost-none triple sheet, for instance-- if you want the real upscale hotel simulated by the Grand Floridian you should try the JW Marriott a few miles away-For theme-ing though, the onsite hotels are great-- the Wilderness, Animal, Polynesian, etc. . We stayed for half the trip here and half off site. We visited almost all the on site hotels. On site advantages include wonderfully themed lobbies (rooms tend to be ho hum) earlier openings to the parks, free delivery service of purchases to the hotel, easy mobility between parks and hotels (none of the buses. boats, monorails take much time), high kid-friendliness, wonderful pools. Also, if you purchase a plastic drink cup at the start of your visit in the hotel, you can have free (soft drinks/coffee/cocoa) refills (at your particular lodge-not others) for the duration. On the minus side, the WDW is designed to ensure that all your money stays with Disney-you are sort of trapped-staff do not happily inform you about resources/stores/services outside WDW (bring your own liquor). And, if you are used to the JW or Ritz, this is not that. At the Wilderness, the food selection was limited and, except for the cafe, was hardy. We found that the delux hotels tended to have a cafe, an expensive restaurant and a more relaxed restaurant specializing in food matched to theme one price "all you can eat" sort of fare (not great if you tend to split entres, as we do). The pool was wonderful but we also pool hopped (not endorsed by WDW) and found some of the others to be even better. Some of the moderately priced hotels (not deluxe) had better food selection and food courts-better for small eaters. Another key is to BARTER ALWAYS-when you make the reservation and once you arrive (do you have anything nicer for that price?)-even later if you want to move up (we'd like to move to the court yard pool view?). Look at a guide book for hints about the best rooms in a given hotel. When you arrive, ask if they can move you up (or over) Depending upon who you get and how patient they are, you can end up with a highly desirable view at a lower price. We ended up with a nice view but, in reality, we only looked at the view a few times the entire week-how much was that worth? Also, try to book tickets before you go-once you are on property they've gottha and discounts are scarce.-unless you are computer equipped.

I notice that some folks complain about long waits for boat rides to the Park. I suggest taking the boat to the Contempary 1st from the Wilderness Lodge, then catch the mono to the Magic Kingdom. Come on, you're in Disney! We never had problems with a long wait this way. This hotel is fabulous, our kids loved it. If you think the rooms are too small, you have not been out and about enough. Spend a day at the Magic Kingdom or Epcot and you will welcome the cozy and cool room, with bunk beds for the kids. The kids will pass out before their heads hit the pillow, and mom and dad can catch up on some zzzz's or watch a little TV before pulling the shades for an afternoon slumber; dark and cool, with the soft sounds of your little ones purring away. Don't you just love Disney!

Me and my now wife went to the wilderness lodge back in 1999 and then we went back and got married there in 2003.We have been going to Disney for the past nine years and have stayed in quite a few of the disney hotels,we can say without a doubt this is by far the best. From the time you walk into the lobby and have your breath taken away to the way you are treated like royalty by the staff there is nothing you can fault about the lodge, and if you ever stay in any of the value or moderate hotels you see the diference in the service.Me and my wife loved it so much we went there in 2003 and got married they couldn't have treated us better we will defintely be going back there again.

My family and I stayed at the resort for three nights in late August. I agree with one traveller's comment that this resort needs some renovation. Our woodsview room was on the 4th floor. When we first arrived, we noticed some old face clothes/towels were left on the bathroom floor. The carpet was not well cleaned or vacuumed. We had to call the maintenance department several times to fix our T.V. (no sound) and hair dryer (due to loose parts). Even the laundry facility was unavailable at times due to repairs needed to be done. I ordered a mini-fridge for my room on the first night, but it never showed up. My worst experience was the 45 minutes that it took for me to get registered when I arrived, as well as the regular noise that my family heard from the supposedly "Whispering Canyons" Restaurant downstairs. The only good aspects that we enjoyed were: the swimming pool (with its fun slide), the free parking, the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom we could see from our room, and the decor in the lobby.

I just returned from a six night stay at the Wilderness Lodge. I can honestly say this is the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at. The theming was amazing, and the lobby was incredible. I could stare at it all day. When we arrived I didnt like our original room (only because it was on the first floor). The people at the front desk took care of it within minutes and we were in a room on the 5th floor with a woods view. The view was lovely, and it was very quite on this side of the lodge. The lodge is busy at all hours. You will always find people sitting in the lobby relaxing or out in the pools. The pool areas were so beautiful, the water runs from the lobby out to the pool. It is lovely to look at. The hot tubs were large and worked very well. Our room was kept very clean, and the air conditioning was perfect. Florida is horribly hot in August, but our room always felt cool and comfortable. Housekeeping keeps the room clean and even leaves little towels in the shape of animals in the room for you. The light fixtures, walls, carpeting, restuarants etc...all have a wonderful wilderness theme. We rented a boat a bay lake and drove around and admired the lodge from the lake. We had such a wonderful stay. There is constant transportation to the parks from the lodge, so it is easy to get around. This resort is amazing for children too. There is so much for them to do. The whispering canyon restaurant is very kid friendly. I do not have children yet, but will bring them here one day. This resort can be enjoyed by couples or families! It is one of Disney's best! I can not wait to return!

Two friends and I stayed at The Wilderness Lodge Aug. 7-14th 2004. We found it to be very friendly, warm and welcoming as well as clean. It was very much worth the money. We paid extra to have concierge service, it is worth it if you plan on eating at all times they have food out which is around morning, mid afternoon and a late afternoon dinner. They don't provide whole meals but definately enough if you want a light dinner or snack. They also turn down your bed for you, as well as clean and keep you fully stocked with towels. We were there at the time Hurricane Charley passed through. The staff kept us informed as to the current weather conditions and such so that way we were not in the dark. We were on the 7th floor and felt very safe. Overall this hotel is incredible and when I return to DisneyWorld I will definately be back to the Wilderness Lodge. If you have specific questions please feel free to email me, I know what its like to not know what your getting into with a hotel.

We stayed at the Wilderness Lodge for a week at the end of April and had a great time. We didn't find anything negative about it. The hotel lobby was breathtaking. The rooms were very nice - ours overlooked the pool. Our kids loved the bunk beds (request them before you arrive). The pool was also very nice, although we didn't spend a lot of time in it, as we spent most of our time at the parks.

For the people who said that the Wilderness Lodge is too expensive: you won't pay regular price if you have a Disney visa credit card. If you call periodically and ask if there are any room specials going on you can rebook your resevation and upgrade your room and save a lot of money - we did!

We highly recommend eating at the Whispering Canyon Cafe at least once while you are there - its not like any other restaurant - lots of fun!

Book the Wilderness Lodge and enjoy your trip!
