Holiday Inn & Suites Across from Universal Orlando
Ranked #168 of 340 Hotels in Orlando
Reviewed March 6, 2007

We stayed over at the Holiday Inn Universal from Dec-06 ending thru Jan 1st '07 , to celebrate the new year in Orlando.

Right upon arrival we were asked to wait for 4 hours in the lobby as the room was not ready. A person on the front desk (His name is Euclid) acted extremely aloof and his attitude was saying that he does not care at all what we do and we were wasting his time asking for options.

The room itself was a twin bed with hair on the pillows.

The worst part was yet to come. The bathroom was absolutely filthy, with what looked like blood stains in the bath tub as well as the floor looked like it had dirt pasted all over the place.

From the 2nd night of the stay, the bathroom ceiling literally started leaking with a yellow watery substance running down and splashing on the sink surface and all over the bathroom. We had to use towels to let the water/whatever it was drip on the same.

Nothing was done with our complaints. There was no internet connectivity as well.

I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed in a suite - the room was beautiful and VERY clean. All staff were very friendly and helpful (ice machine wasnt working in the fridge, they were there within 5 minutes with a large box of ice).
This hotel is right across the street from Universal/Islands of Adventure - it's a beautifully landscaped 10 minute walk to the park entrance. You do have to cross a busy road, but there are signals-had no problems crossing it with my 6 and 11 year olds.
Kids eat free at TGIFridays (which is attached to hotel) but make sure you ask for the "Kids Eat Free" coupon when checking in at the front desk (they forgot to give us ours). Food isn't the best but convenient - I would recommend eating somewhere else if you can.
The pool is heated and very clean - kids had a great time in it.
I was very impressed with this hotel and will for sure be back.

I recently spent two nights at this hotel in conjunction with a national sports championship. I did not choose this hotel - it was chosen by two other couples attending this event. I read most of the TA reviews and chose to reserve a two bedroom suite ($198 plus taxes the first night and $180 plus taxes for the second night).

The hotel is located quite near Universal Studios but almost 14 miles from our event venue in Disneyworld. Check-in was rather slow and not particularly friendly, though not rude. As a member of the Holiday Inn Priority Club (I believe that was the reason), I was given a snack bag with an apple, pretzels and M&M's.

The suite itself was at the end of a long corridor on the 3rd floor. It was adequate for our needs. We entered a room with a sleeper sofa, chair, coffee table, TV, small dining table with two chairs and a small "kitchen" that included a full size refrigerator, dishwasher, sink, microwave and a small assortment of dishes, silverware and utensils. As I live only three hours from Orlando, I knew to bring a cooler loaded with beverages and we brought back leftovers over our stay and were able to keep them fresh.

The suite had two bedrooms, each with its own bath. One room had two double beds and the other had a king bed. Oddly enough, this suite has an occupancy of 10 people though we only counted space for 8 - they must think you might also order a rollaway for the king bedded room. If you were trying for maximum occupancy, the suite would be stuffed to the gills!

The bedrooms were of a very nice size. The softgoods in the rooms (spread, curtains, pillows, etc.) seemed to be very new and were of a very nice quality. The bathrooms had a shower/tub room with the toilet and the single sink kind of off the bedroom itself. Everything was reasonably clean, though the shower could have used a good grout cleaning. There was plentiful hot water and good water pressure. Enough towels, though not of great quality. Small toiletries were provided - mouthwash, shampoo and hand lotion. Lighting was good. Each bedroom had a TV set and adeqaute storage. One problem was that the entire suite was controlled by a single thermostat in the living area - one bedroom was freezing all the time, the other was on the warm side and the living was just right (sounds like Goldilocks and the Three Bears!) We never saw housekeeping as we were gone all day, but they seemed to do a good job, though dirty dishes in the dishwasher weren't cleaned for the second day.

There was plentiful parking on the property. The hotel restaurant is the adjacent TGIF Friday's. They deliver room service and I believe in the pool area. There is a Walgreens nearby. The hotel has a gift shop, tour desk, shuttles to Universal, business center and pool, though we did not use any of those facilities and services.

Thank you to TA reviewers for your suggestions to reserve a suite. We used it at the end of each day as a gathering place and it worked very well for us. My sister had a regular room and was not at all happy with it. I think the major drawback to this hotel from my perspective was the not-so-friendly or helpful staff. Also, if you plan to do the Disneyworld thing, look for something further south on I-4 (actually I believe they call that west on I-4). We did get good value for our dollar, but I would have never chosen this hotel in the first place. Bottom line, I feel very neutral about this hotel, not excited, not upset. Just kind of blah.

This was the second time that we stayed at this hotel. This time we booked a suite which was just enough room. There was 10 of us in there. The room was clean and we loved the fact that after a long day at the parks we could order room service from TGIFridays. We are planning another trip to orlando in April of 07 and are staying at this hotel again. I love how close it is to Universal. There is also a very nice Ponderosa within walking distance that has a incredible 3.99 breakfast buffet that we ate everyday.

We stayed here with a group (20 people) and it was okay. The suites were clean and comfortable, and the kitchen (sink, microwave, full fridge, table, chairs, plates, bowls, etc) allowed us to escape from a theme-park-only diet for 4 days. The beds were comfortable, although the suites seem to only come with doubles--no kings or even queens. A little small for the average American couple!! The rooms--bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms--were spacious and provided everyone with space to stretch out in. There was free internet in the room and a pay-office center on the lobby level with internet computers, printers, fax machine, etc. There is also a game room on the lobby level with air hockey, video games (Miss Pac-Man for us old timers), pinball, and various other video games.
The staff does not go out of its way to make you feel welcome, although they did not do anything exactly rude. Wake up calls came on time, cabs were called, etc, but one gets a distinct feeling of the front desk "just doing their jobs'" which is okay if you aren't picky about having your butt kissed.
The "guest services" desk is a vacation-home scam--beware!
TGIFridays is the restaurant which was all right but I don't want to eat at another one of those for a while!!
There is an OK pool and no hot tub. Fridays will bring you drinks and snacks there.
Universal is a quick 10-15 minute walk away,or there is a free scheduled shuttle which takes about the same amount of time, if not longer. Disney is a $40 cab, as is the airport. There is no grocery store (Walgreens, though, within 2-3 blocks) nearby. If you're planning on cooking in the kitchenette, you might want to stop at a real grocery store in a less-touristy area.
All in all if you are visiting Universal Orlando with kids this hotel comes highly reccomended--it is not romantic but a good headquarters! If you are looking for a little extra from a hotel check out Universal's Portofino resort or the Hard Rock. Or just go to Disneyworld.

The hotel lobby and pool were fabulous. The restaraunt was perfect for us and our 3 kids. Universal Studios is a hop, skip and a jump. But, the rooms were horrendous. And for the amount we paid, too. It was filthy. The bathroom was falling apart and disgusting. I was afraid to turn out the lights and close my eyes at bedtime. If only I had known to complain, maybe we would have gotten one of the nice suites.

This starts our terrible but ends up great so please read entire review. First ,If your not staying in a suite - forget it!! The first day we arrived we payed for 3 rooms. In our room I pulled back the sheets to lay down and found hair and cooked rice in the bed. Yuck! By mid day we had ants crawling in our room. Okay - this can happen. My mother's room had ants too - bad! So we let the front desk know and they said they would spray the rooms. No one ever came so at 10pm at night we were switching to new rooms. What went from bad just got worse. In our room the carpets were damp and the toilet had mold growing on the entire seat! My mother's room had mold growing on the walls - all over the walls! The toilet didn't flush either. This time I went to the manager and spoke with him. The rooms were terrible but the staff from the time we arrived was great! The manager exchanged our rooms to 3 suites at no extra charge and paid for our breakfast the next day. The suites were clean, new and updated. They were fresh and really made the difference. In the rooms there is a plastic desktop that states if your not satisfied they will make it right and they did. I would not return to this hotel unless I was in a suite. There is a restaurant attached (Friday's) but there is a Cracker Barrell, Denny's, Komo's Steak House and two other restraunts all in walking distance. There is a Walgreens in walking distance too. The cab ride to Universal was $3.25 which beats waiting for the trolley or the bus.
