“Cockroach City”
Reviewed October 18, 2007

I booked this hotel through an airline website as a last minute air/hotel package. What a big mistake...I assumed the hotel would be fine just by the Holiday Inn website. When we checked into our room, there was a dead cockroach in the middle of the floor. We called down to the desk and they moved us across the hall. Where...surprise...there were cockroaches in this room too but they were alive. (9th floor) Our tub drained the first day after taking showers, but by the 3rd and final morning it was 1/2 full with dirty water that was not draining. After talking to the front desk at checkout I found out we paid $53/night...cheap but I rather have slept in my rental car! Yuck!

We stayed at the Holiday Inn March of 2007, and overall we had a pretty good trip.

When we arrived at the hotel, we were pretty impressed with the looks of things. The staff was VERY friendly and helpful. They had booked us for a normal room, however after reading the reviews we decided to upgrade to a suite. This was no problem, and we weren't charged extra for the suite! When we got to our room, it was nice a big. It included a kitchenette, however there was no stove. (Not a big deal though because we ate out every night.) There was a good sized living room beside the kitchen, and the bedrooms were in another room. The room was clean, and comfortable. The bathroom was pretty average, although the sink seemed rather slow.

The hotel is located directly across from Universal Studios, which is nice. It's about a ten minute walk into the park from the hotel, which can save you money, because the Universal Studios parking garages were pricey.

We didn't spend much time in the hotel, but there we did manage to see a good sized pool, a games room, and a business room. Because I don't own a laptop, it was nice to have that business room there, with accessible computers. ($)

Attached to the hotel is a TGI Fridays restaurant. We ate there once and I really enjoyed the food. Down the road from the hotel is a Cracker Barrel Restaurant for those who prefer more homestyle cooking.

Lots to see and do in the area. Definitely enjoyed the Universal Studios theme parks. Ideal location. But I really reccomend staying in the suite as appose to a normal room.

2 bedroom suite can not be beat for under $200. I only had 5 people but 3 rooms with 3 tv's, 2 baths & kitchen are the best for function and privacy. Rooms were clean, kitchenette and large fridge were great. Halls do smell musty and lobby not as grand as I am accustomed but great rooms are the key. Blankets were double wrapped in clean sheets like expensive hotels. You have the option of 3 or 4 pillow types: quickly brought to your room. Maids forgot to replenish coffee but desk bent over backwards to send refills up to the room. Kids used the pool and loved it. Attached Friday's restaurant was better than expected and many dining options in walking distance. I often drive to Universal then regret it when parking takes me longer and gets me no closer than walking from the hotel would (stay on the sidewalk). I have stayed here often with 4 to 10 people but always in a 3 room suite. I have no idea what the regular rooms are like but definitely recommend the suites.

I would never recommend this Hotel to anyone especially if you have children. The moment we stepped in the thought of staying the week was dreadful. The sheets were dirty when we pulled the covers, toilet was left unflushed from someone that was in the room prior, and the housekeeping staff was very unfriendly. Of the 7 days stayed 3 days our room hadn't been cleaned and we had to call housekeeping to actually get fresh linens. The Hotel lobby carpets were wet, which gave off a distinct smell so the staff put out fans to eliminate the odor. Never ever would I stay here again.

Regarding the Holiday Inn on Kirkman Road in Orlando I could never recommend this hotel to anyone. The costs were relatively inexpensive compared to surrounding hotels but for a reason. Our hotel room had a plumbing problem, which was resolved, but the hallways had a very musty odor. The rooms were dated and very average. I'm not quite sure what that film was that was floating on the hotel pool. Though internet access is available for free in the room, there are steep costs imposed to use the computers and printer in the Business Center. We had many problems attempting to log on to these computers and calls to the help desk did nothing so I ended up losing money. Also avoid the Guest Services desk, it is only a front for promoting sales tours to a nearby resort. The associates at this desk were not prepared to answer any questions related to the hotel services or the Orlando region. If they ask you if you have your theme park tickets, reply yes and hurry on otherwise, you'll be stuck with a 20 plus minute sales pitch offering up discounts to the theme parks which you could probably find elsewhere without having to take an entire morning out of your vacation time for a sales tour at another hotel.

The hotel is pretty average but it is literally right across the highway from the entrance to Universal Studios which is about a 15 minute walk down the drive. They do provide free shuttles but they are scheduled and we missed the last morning bus so we had to walk but it really wasn't that bad (I wouldn't do it with kids though because it is very dangerous to cross the 8 lane highway). But later that evening we were able to catch a shuttle to City Walk to have drinks and then back again later that night to the Holiday Inn. The staff is extremely friendly and even let us check in 4 hours early which was awesome. Overall I would recommend this place for anyone on a budget because you really can't beat the value.

Most of the reviewers have already covered the problems. But we walked in at 6pm and were able to use a coupon for a $69 rate. Prior to that we went to a Universal Hotel which wanted to charge us $389!!! The room was old and tired but clean. Our mattresses seemed to be new and quite comfortable...Icy cold A/C was a plus in the triple digit heat. the staff were very nice and they did give a courtesy call to make sure everything was alright...they replaced every item we asked for. All in all not a place I would want to stay a week at, but for the money and location I would go there again.
