A trip to "World Famous" Gator Joe's, established in 1926, is a "must" every time we visit family who live in nearby Ocala. While certainly not a "high style" restaurant, Gator Joe's is an eatery with its own style! The building is a bit ramshackle, but charming--just what a lakeside "joint" in central Florida should be. It offers a spacious dining room, long bar, and an extended deck over the Lake Weir shore and beach.
The menu tends to "fried," including a variety of seafood and Florida specialties like 'gator tail and frogs legs. Other menu options include peel-and-eat-shrimp, salads, and some chicken and beef dishes. Grilled offerings are sparse, but my choice for this visit, the grilled mahi-mahi, was well prepared and served with a side of steamed veggies. Others in our party enjoyed the fish tacos and a mixed seafood basket. Bar choices include bottled and draft beers as well as cocktails. Since I like dark brews I tried the draft "Blue Point Toxic Sludge" today. Humorous name, but tasty!
We recommend Gator Joe's for anyone who likes a bit of fun and local ambiance with their meal. It always has hit the spot for us!
