“So-so”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014

Came here for dinner with my family and mom and dad. None of us really enjoyed the meals we had. For the most part it looked and tasted like hotel banquet/wedding food. Not all that impressed. Nothing stuck out as being terrible, just not very good for the price we paid. You can do better elsewhere on the island.

“Disappointing - certainly not fine dining”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2014

We had dinner at Old Captiva House and were looking forward to a relaxed evening a good food.

Things started badly when we arrived as the place was cold; the aircon seemed to have seen set too low as it was cold day outside. After moving our table, I ordered chowder and pompano, trusting that fish would be a safe bet.

The chowder was too creamy and rather insipid in taste; there was just not enough clam and flavour. My pompano was well cooked but was sitting on a large mound of rice with was smothered in sauce. The fish tasted good but did not go well with the rest of the dish. We had to share our meal with the resident pianist whose only style of playing was fortissimo; hardly the background we wanted.

Overall, Old Captiva is overrated and expensive; it is certainly not a fine dining restaurant.

“Number 1 - we agree”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2014

Well deserved #1 rating! We (my wife, my brother and his wife and I) rate this restaurant very highly. We are all are well traveled "young" 70 year olds. We are staying in a Hilton Vacation Club accommodation at South Seas Plantation on the north end of Captiva. Prior to our trip we researched restaurants on this TA website and decided to give Old Captiva house a try. We liked it so much we returned three days later. We had several of their entries. Every one was delicious and well presented. After our second meal we met the executive chief: Jason Miller - he is an ace! We enjoyed the spontaneity of the hostess, "Master Mary" and the professionalism of our waiter, Nile. The lamb chop and the eggplant dishes that I had were the best I have ever had. My brother raved about his ahi tuna and his steak. Our wives also were very happy with their choices: tuna, steak and chicken dishes.

“Like a number of Captiva restaurants, somewhat overrated. Bring a sweater for the Arctic AC”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2014

This is probably the only restaurant in Captiva that claims to offer fine dining.

We made dinner reservations for 6pm and were seated at a quiet table, as we rested. However, the down draught from the AC was positively Arctic on what was hardly a blistering hot evening. We moved to another (slightly warmer) room, although we were warned that a large party would be seated very near to us in due course. In the meantime, they "fixed the down draft but it had little effect on the Arctic temperature. Our waiter, Eric, was a star letting us taste a couple of pinot noirs before settling for the Roshin, which was very good. Our fish cakes were very good, as was the clam chowder ordered by our friends. We ordered the Island snapper encrusted in filo pastry with mashed potatoes, pesto sauce, and asparagus strips as our entrees. Our friends had pompano risotto and vegetables. Although elegantly presented, the snapper/filo was disappointing - soggy filo and a sort of mush containing the snapper. Similarly, the pompano risotto tried to introduce too many different tastes; a simpler recipe would have been more successful. Back to the drawing board on this one, Mr. Chef.

Although lacking the wine choice at Old Captiva, we had a much better dinner at the much less elegant Doc Ford's the previous evening. Please draw your own conclusions as to whether we will return to Old Captiva. I think not. We are with the previous reviewer. Pity as the service is better here.
