“Great Vacation w/ Family at South Seas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 30, 2012

We stayed in the South Seas for a week, and LOVED it. We are a family of 4 (2 year old, 6 month old, husband and wife) and it was a perfect spot for us!

ACCOMODATIONS
We stayed in the South Seas area (south resort) which had perfect access to most of the key resort areas (Main Pool, Ship Store, Harborside, Pointe, Docks, Golf Course, etc etc). The size, decor, condition, and cleanliness of the condo/rooms was outstanding! Exceeded our expectations. Full kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 full baths, dining area, living room, and nice screened in porch overlooking the ocean and golf course.

RESORT
The resort was much larger than expected, but staying on the south end of the resort made it much smaller, as most items of interest are there. Each group of condos/houses has it's own private pool, which is nice -- but the main resort pools are even better, and perfect for kids! The zero entry pool with fountains was perfect for kids, and the waterslides in the H2Whoa pool were fast and fun! Outstanding facilities. Didn't get to play on the golf course, but hope to next time -- it looked amazing! Beautiful views everywhere you looked, the facilities were spotless. All staff were always eager to help you out.

FOOD
Food at all of the restaraunts was consistently good, albeit expensive. Expect to pay DOUBLE what you'd normally pay for food, liquor, etc. at restaraunts and the ship store...but in many cases, it was worth it. Ate at Harborside twice -- once takeout and once at the restaraunt. The main dishes were VERY GOOD. Got a $18 burger here for takeout -- but it was almost worth $18 -- it was a REALLY good burger. Never got to eat at the Pointe, but heard good things. Ate at the BBQ place once . Good BBQ and sides -- great briskett! The ship store made good breakfast sandwiches for a good quick meal. Scoops and Slices had good pizza -- similar to Pizza Hut Pan Pizza style crust, and of course the ice cream was good.

Overall a VERY good experience. We will be back!

Our family was on the fence about booking a stay at the South Seas Island Resort after reading many TA mediocre reviews, but decided to go in mid-July. Let me begin by saying, we were not disappointed-on the contrary, our family had a fantastic stay! We booked a 2 bedroom beach villa with a kids eat free, 4th night free promotion..when we checked in, there was no wait and perhaps they were full and upgraded us to a 3 bedroom beach villa..it was perfect, looked like it was recently updated with granite countertops and was immaculate. (see pics) I had read reviews of housekeeping showing up in the late afternoon-we never saw this for our 6 day stay, in fact, one day we were in the room when housekeeping arrived at 12:00. They always cleaned the villa thoroughly-no issues there.

Restaurants-we ate several times at the Pointe-excellent food and waitstaff, right by one of the many pools. Also ate once at Scoops & Slices-pretty bad pizza-we wouldn't be back...the food at Harbourside Grill was good for both the buffet breakfast and for dinner, expensive for what it was. Holy smokes BBQ was good, very rustic setting-picnic tables inside, the kids enjoyed that. We had a rude waitress on one of the two occasions we ate dinner here, but she seemed new and gave her the benefit of the doubt.

The pools-wow-claim your beach chairs early in the day or you may be out of luck! Our kids, 9, 7, and 5 loved the pool with the watersides. At first we were surprised the pools close at 6, then we were bitten up by Mosquitos at dusk, I guess that's why the pools aren't open for night swimming!

They do have the trolley that gets between the north and south parts of the resort, but we rented a car from the airport and just used that to get around.

We had a great, relaxing experience during our stay, the property is gorgeous and we hope to come back.

I went to the South Seas for my birthday and it turned out to be so much more! Unbeknownst to me my boyfriend planned to propose on my birthday! We stayed in one of the cottages 50 feet from the water and it was amazing! There were two bedrooms and a bedroom loft area, kitchen area as well as a fantastic view off the balcony. The concierge was a amazing and helped my boyfriend coordinate flowers at two different venues and champagne in the room. He took me to the beautiful beach for a walk in the early morning and got down on one knee to propose- it was perfectly sweet! This will alwys be e very special memory in spite of hurricane Isaac! Overall our experience was the perfect weekend in paradise!

We've stayed at this resort before, this was actually our 4th visit. It's sad to say that we don’t plan on returning unless significant changes are made. When you pay this much money to be a guest at South Seas, you should be treated like royalty. Instead, you have employees that try not to make eye contact with you so they don’t have to say anything. I overheard one of the beach lifeguards telling a guest that she couldn't move her beach chair any closer to the water, that the chairs all had to remain in line per management rule. It's a public beach, but as a guest, you're not allowed to sit where you want. We went to North Point pool one afternoon and thought we would order pizza from Scoops for lunch. Woman working at Scoops said it would take too long to cook an entire pizza that I should just take their slices they had already prepared. I complied, took order to go, went back to pool. Management came over and said we couldn't have any food on the pool deck. Had to pack up all of our belongings and move over to their restaurant eating area. It was busy, so we lost our chairs and umbrella when we moved. Worse yet, my wife and I both got sick after eating the greasy pizza. Hard to enjoy the rest of your vacation when you're not feeling well. On a positive note, beautiful landscaping, beaches, shell collecting. Saw dolphins on a daily basis and manatees in the marina. For the price of this trip, we could have visited Hawaii, anywhere else in Florida, the Caribbean islands, etc… We’ll need to find somewhere else to spend our money next time.

My husband and I stayed here in August. We were married on sanibel and thought we would try captiva. The island is gorgeous! Our stay at the south seas was ok... Here are the pros and cons

Pros: gym was super nice, had a trolly to bring you around the resort as it is large and too big to walk from one end to the other, the harbor was nice and fun to watch the boats come in and out, the grounds were taken care of nicely and were pretty, the beach was nice as it came with chairs and umbrellas. It is very kid friendly and provide many things to do if you have children... We did not. The staff were very friendly.

Cons: first room we had there was black mold coming out of the vent leaving us to change rooms at 930pm, our next room had a really hard bed and blood on the sheets, the rooms are cleaned very late in the day which makes it hard to shower when coming back from the beach, the beach is really nice and provide chairs but you are right on top of the next person and they place the chairs right next to each other, the pools were crowded with kids and made it impossible to use... Would recommend having a pool just for adults.

Overall the resort was nice but were so disappointed with our room and the mold and blood on the sheets.

This was our second time staying at South Seas Plantation. The first time was about 10 years ago and it was a great experience. This last time, we were disappointed on a few occasions. We brought our flats boat and were about to go out to the pass to try to get some fish. We asked the harbor master for fuel and his reply was that they closed at 5:00PM. It was maybe 10 minutes after, and he reluctantly gave us fuel. When you are on vacation, you do not want to hear people complaining, I would rather someone simply say yes or no than make me feel like I am an inconvenience. The same thing occurred at the pool at South Seas. We apprached two bartenders talking between themselves at the pool bar who told us they were about to close and that "they suppose they could make us a drink". Again, I hear people complain enough at work, when I go on vacation, I do not want to hear this.

South Seas has really gone down hill with their staff. They are complacent and rude for the amount of money they command for their resort. Sadly, I will not be going back to South Seas again.

When we were at South Seas 25 years ago for our honeymoon, the resort ans service was first class. I must say we were not disappointed when we recently returned for our 25th anniversary. If anything, the resort had improved. To be perfectly honest we had no complaints. Other than the storm chasing us home early, our experience was beyond our expectations. I must say I was a little worried before we left after reading some of the negative reviews. After returning home I am actually curious as to where these people were. Seriously!, Obviously experiences will vary according to the dates you stay, the staff, and most importantly the expectations and personalities of the quests. As many of the staff changed daily, some were more helpful than others, but we never experienced anyone to be rude, etc. Usually if you respond politely, kindly, and with respect, they will respond the same. Reading the reviews before we booked was very helpful. Everything we requested was granted to us. We stayed in a one bedroom beach villa and requested a second story, and updated unit. It was extremely nice and well equipped. Make sure you request a upper story unit or your view of the ocean will be blocked or limited. Of course depending on availability, etc they may not be able to honor your preferences. Regardless, of the room you receive, their is no shortage of amazing things to experience. The shells we found were amazing. The beach had unlimited space, and the pools were plentiful. The two of us had a very romantic and relaxing experience. It is was not hard to find privacy. We cant wait to bring our entire family next time. They will have the time of their lives, guaranteed, The restaurants just outside the resort were exceptional. If you like key lime pie, you have to go to The Key Lime Bistro. Incredible! Everyone has their own tastes, but for us it was simply Paradise. We have been to quite a few places and countries and South Seas stacks up well against all the others.
