One of my favorite spots to eat out, either on a sunny day on their back deck with it's beautiful view of the water, or evenings inside in their casual but welcoming interior tables. Food is reasonably priced with ample portions and served with their wonderful hushpuppies and strawberry butter, a treat I've not seen anywhere else around. I especially like the coconut chicken salad - YUM!! A great place to dine casually with a beautiful water view without having to travel far and fight the tourist traffic and higher prices at the beach.

I went down to the Boathouse Landing after reviewing their website and hearing good word of mouth on their fresh seafood and specials. I was really looking forward to their specials hoping for a good value local restaurant as that's hard to find here in Niceville.

The Restaurant - we sat outside, it was an awesome view right on the bay; couldn't ask for much better on that aspect.

The Service - prompt and polite; no issues. The kids got to color with crayons; hooray!!

The Food - good food but nothing to right home about. The most exciting part of my meal was the hush puppies with strawberry cream-cheese; YUM. My steak, shrimp, and fish we're all pretty standard; the steak was the best which was quite disappointing for a seafood restaurant. My wife did not seem astounded, though she said she enjoyed her meal. As for the kids.... they enjoyed it.

Value - As for the special sI had heard and read about online... they were not to be found. The menu was on the expensive side I found, especially if your taking the family. They had one that was posted on a chalk-board as you went in, but it wasn't something we we're interested in. We asked the waitress, and she explained that the one posted was it. Also, I was disappointed that the beer specials only apply if you at the bar, NOT if you order from outside where your seated. RATS.

ALL IN ALL - 3.25/5; not too shabby, but I was expecting more. The view was the best part, followed by the hush-puppy's. For a non-chain seafood joint, I was expecting more. If they pushed the value, they'd do much better I'm sure. I'll likely go back in a few months to try lunch, but I'm certainly in no hurry to head back to the Boathouse Landing.

Boathouse Landing is located on the banks of a bayou called Boggy Bayou. The view, consequently, is quite lovely, especially if you sit on one of the two deck levels. Seafood is their strong point, and it's really delicious. I've had various types of fish and shrimp here both grilled and fried, and while the fried versions are good, the grilled versions really show off the fresh quality of the fish. The hushpuppies are also good, and the strawberry cream-cheese butter that accompanies them makes them even better.

The default sides that come with dishes are usually rice pilaf and fresh steamed vegetables, not the standard fries and over-salted veggies you get at lots of other seafood places around this part of Florida. Boathouse Landing is also pretty busy around lunchtime, as it is only about 5 minutes from Eglin AFB, making it a popular lunch destination for many of the people that work on base. The small bar downstairs is pretty neat, too. Some of the older locals like to hang out here and play trivia games.

Even though the place is frequented by many, Boathouse Landing is a pretty laid-back place, thanks to the staff, the decks and lots of windows (if you eat inside) and the beautiful sunny (but shaded) location on the water. There's no loud music, either. I like coming here occasionally as an alternative to the rambunctious, noisy, packed-in-like-sardines, cookie-cutter feeding troughs most tourists like to go to in Destin.
