“Very interesting... and free!”
Review of The Hub

The Hub
Reviewed August 29, 2014

We asked the volunteer greeters at The Hub on Canal what the hub was. Turns out even they don't know what all this place is. We viewed over 75 artists works in several mediums. Many were very professional. This is like going to an art show, but without the weather hassles. Live music shows are available some nights, there are classes on the arts, yoga, even language classes. Absolutely loved this place.

The Hub has an outstanding collection of art studios under one roof. We enjoyed visiting and talking to local artists in their studios and returned for the Friday evening music. This evening had a nice folk singer followed by the cast from the NSB little theater. This place is a true art gem!

Wherever we travel, we typically cannot resist poking our heads into the local artist co-op just for a look-see, in search of artwork, a novel decor or gift item -- often offered at insanely reasonable prices. The inspiration comes free. The Hub on Canal in NSB is not just another art co-op store with a sales clerk and nobody else around...but more of an arts festival experience, and one that rates among the top co-op experiences we've had in terms of it's atmosphere, quality and access to working artists. Love the interior architecture: Two floors with many nooks and crannies, a hidden courtyard, several meeting rooms and visual surprises -- paintings, sculpture, ceramics, carvings and jewelry -- around every corner. Included are a good number of working studios where you might be able to catch some of the more than 70 artisans represented at work on their current creations and always willing to stop and chat about it.

This gallery is a kind of co-op with multiple artists exhibiting and demonstrating. We discovered this after buying a painting from a local artist and subsequently visiting her Web site. Visiting The Hub was the primary reason for out trip to New Smyrna Beach, which is about 75 miles from our home. We were pleasantly surprised by the quantity, variety, and quality of the art. We purchased one painting and one wood carving, and were tempted by many more pieces, but you can't have everything. The Hub is well worth the visit if you are looking for unusual art. It is in the Canal Street Historic District, and there are many other unique shops in the area.
