Have stayed at the Waldorf for the past few years now and finally decided to try the Strip House for steak. (We usually go down the road to Shula's, but it was booked).
My wife and I ordered a lobster and an 8oz. filet mignon to share and also ordered the 6oz filet mignon for our 10 year old son. (the 6oz filet is only offered to children, adults must order 8oz or more).
The restaurant is not up to the Morton, Palm, Shula standards for a good steakhouse. The menu is not as diverse and they are very heavy on the bacon and starch selections. The menu does not specify the size of the lobster and although they clean it for you, when they bring out the shell so you can work on the legs, it comes out very dry as they probably use a warming lamp on the shell which dries out the remaining meat. (we ordered the lobster steamed and the shell came to us so crispy it was almost broiled).
The most upsetting part of the meal was that when our son took his first bite of steak, he immediately spit it out saying something tasted funny. My wife and I took one smell of the steak and realized that it was clearly off and had a terrible rancid smell. When we politely mentioned this to the server, she apologized and took it back to the chef who informed her to tell us that THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE MEAT!?! We were so shocked. Clearly the chef did not want to admit that he had served us rancid food, or he couldn't tell bad steak from good...either way, VERY DISAPPOINTING. The server was embarrassed and offered the steak for free...duh!?...and a free dessert. No thanks, our appetites were ruined.
Not an apology from the manager or anyone else.
Too bad. We will not be back, nor will any of our friends or family.
