Owner description: The Bird Rookery Swamp Trail officially opened in July 2011. The Bird Rookery Swamp Trail offer 12 miles of hiking and biking trails, including an 1800-ft. boardwalk with wheelchair accessibility. A 1/4-mile crushed shell path leads to an 1800-foot boardwalk, then the trails become ground level, sandy/grassy relatively flat berms with swamp on both sides. The trails are actually old tram roads used when the area was logged many years ago. Biking can be a challenge on the grassy/sandy trails, but quite rewarding. The maple-cypress swamp is home to alligators, otters, Florida panthers, bobcats, white-tailed deer and more. There is one port-o-potty at the beginning of the boardwalk and several benches along the trail within the first 1.5 miles. Beyond that there are no structures. Birders will delight in the abundance of songbirds that frequent the cypress trees along the boardwalk, as well as the many raptors and wading birds found along the trails. Barred owls are common and swallow-tailed kites frequent the area in summer.

My wife and I had been to Bird Rookery Swamp Trails on our own several times before and loved the peaceful wilderness there, often being the only car in the parking lot. Our one doubt was what to do if an alligator blocked the trail between us and the parking lot, as had happened to someone we met last year, so we had not been very adventurous. We decided to book on this free tour (optional donations) in order to have an expert's advice, and learn more about the area. George Luther was our guide, he is engaging, humorous and very informative, but happy to get information from the visitors about particular wildlife they may know more about. In his words, we know a little about a lot of things around here, but you may know more about something specific.
The guided tour lasted about 2.5 hours, we did not walk any further than we had previously on our own, because we and the other visitors asked so many questions.
We now feel much more confident about returning on our own and walking further. With a big stick! Apparently the bigger risk is ants (if you happen to stand still on an anthill) and water mocassins.

We went on a Wednesday walk led by George Luther. He was very informative and made the walk very interesting by telling us a lot about the Indian settlements and the local flora and fauna. We saw alligators, ibis, tree frog, limpkin and buzzards. Would definitely go again.
