Owner description: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

“Very quiet except for some loud tourists”
Reviewed November 26, 2010

I stopped here on my way from Ft. Myers to Naples to check out the "elusive" orchids and alligators. Unfortunately they were too elusive for me but I still had and wonderful and educational experience during my 2.5 mile walk through the Corkscrew Swamp. I did see some fabulous winged wildlife and a couple fearless raccoons. All in all a very serene experience as long as I stayed away from the yapping tourists.

I visit Corkscrew quite often because I only live 2 hours away. It is a fantastic place to see birds, gators, and many other animals. During the months of July and August, they have a rare ghost orchid that has been blooming since 2007. It's way up in a tree, but they set up a telescope when it has blooms and you can see it real clear with either a zoom lens or, better yet, binoculars. It's a rare opportunity to see this orchid, because it doesn't grow in very many places. It is endangered and protected by both state and federal laws.

Besides the orchid, Corkscrew is a beautiful place to walk around (it's about a 2-mile boardwalk - all in the shade). You get a look at many birds up close, such as hawks, night herons, blue and white herons, woodpeckers - as well as gators, and a variety of other wildlife. Sometimes you get lucky and see otters and deer.

The swamp itself is quite beautiful, especially when the water is high (which it is now). There are cypress knees, lush greenery, and beautiful "swamp flowers" all over.

The price to get in is very reasonable $10 or $5 for Audubon members. I highly recommend visiting!

“Not many birds when we went”
Reviewed July 3, 2010

We talked to people while we were there. Apparently it is all in the timing. We didn't see a whole lot of wildlife. The area is still very beautiful. We went in March and can't remember when we were told was the best time. Maybe someone else on here can provide that information. We also heard that many years ago it was better, but due to environment change through the years there is less wildlife.

“Audubon at its best”
Reviewed June 27, 2010

We scheduled a walk around the Corkscrew Sanctuary as an antidote to all the shopping and eating we were doing on a recent trip to Naples. It was just as we expected/hoped -- a glimpse of Florida as it used to be. The boardwalk is very well situated within the property and is well maintained. We learned a fair amount from the posted signs.

It's worth mentioning that in the hot summer, most parts of Corkscrew provide a fair measure of relief from the heat. It's so shady and watery that it really is several degrees cooler than the "outside world".
