Owner description: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

“The highlight of our trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2009

We've been coming to Naples for over 15 years and we had not visited Corkscrew until now. Rest assured, we will definitely be returning. An elevated platform guides you over 2 miles of protected wetland and forest area. The scene is serenely peaceful and idyllic, especially when there aren't many other visitors around. You can hear the sounds of nature all around you, and we were fortunate enough to see raccoons, alligators, and all manner of birds along our walk. The weather was absolutely perfect: 75 degrees with a cool breeze. The pathways are well-structured and maintained and volunteer guides are knowledgeable and friendly. I had no idea that such a beautiful, peaceful place existed so close to home.

“A bird lover's paradise!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2009

A fabulous place for bird lovers! I added 3 life birds to my unwritten list - several wood storks in flight (Corkscrew has the largest concentration of resting wood storks in the US - maybe the world), a yellow crowned night heron and red shouldered hawks (we have mostly redtails in the midwest). Very exciting.

On top of that, we saw a pileated woodpecker climb a tree 6' away from the boardwalk - closest I've even seen this largest of the woodpeckers, for which Woody was named, many anhingas, a great egret flew right over us and a second later, another egret did the same.

If you're interested in birds, come here, bring good binoculars and a camera with a good zoom. Sadly, my long lens was broken:( And enjoy! Just remember - they kick you out at 5:30.

“Peaceful Awe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 4, 2009

A wonderful, easy, peaceful walk with closeup access to nature. Don't forget your camera even though it won't be able to capture the true feeling of this experience. It is a place you can go back to time and time again, and you will always see something new.

“Great birds/wildlife, knowledgeable staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2009

By far the best preserve in SW Florida. You'll see a wide variety of marsh and swamp birds, including a nesting colony of the huge wood storks. Plan at least 2 hours to take your time along the walkway, or you won't really see much. The guides along the way are very knowledgeable and worth the conversation. If you're a novice, just stop where you see others gathered and ask them to help you see what they see.

“Pristine Wilderness”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2008

While on a visit to The Fairchild Gardens Miami, our guide mentioned this and as we were planning on staying at Naples for a couple of days thought that we would visit.
As it was early July we were warned that the water had almost disappeared and so not much wild life would be visible but we still enjoyed our walk along the 2.25 mile boardwalk which meanders through pine flatwoods, open prairie and the largest forest of bald cypress in North America. Even though we didn’t see any of the alligators, otters, Florida black bear, we did see; the rare ghost orchid which was pointed out to us by one of the rangers.
