Owner description: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

“Wonderful wildlive viewing”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

This is an outstanding place to view wildlife. Lots of boardwalk through the swamp, walk and talk quietly and you'll see so much. Take binoculars and water. Make sure you allow several hours to really appreciate the beauty of the swamp.

“Quiet boarwalk sanctuary”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

There is a small shop and visitor centre on arrival and there are easy boardwalk trails that take you through the tree and open areas. We saw a lot of birds on our afternoon visit but didn't manage to see any other wildlife (morning may be a better time to visit), however, there are volunteers dotted about to help you spot the wildlife that's out and about. Binoculars are a good idea to bring along.

“Wonderful for all ages”
Reviewed March 16, 2013 via mobile

We spent over 4 hours here on a 2 1/2 mile boardwalk looking at wildlife. We were rewarded with alligators and their young, several kinds of herons, an owl, brown lizards with orange inflatable dewlaps, and a kingfisher. No docent tour on Saturday, but naturalists were by the busiest sites (Lettuce Lakes) to answer questions and point out birds. If you're not up to the walk, there's a shortcut to the Lakes where much of the birds and other critters are easy to see. Good picture-taking too!

“Birders Paradise”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

The two mile boardwalk takes you through many different Floridian ecosystems which makes for incredible chances to see lots of different birds. We returned the following day (which is free) to spend even more time enjoying the diversity we found.
