Owner description: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

Much to see and do, easy walkways, good for handicapped. You never know what you will see! Birds, amphibians and so much more.

“Wildlife Fan!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

My husband and I have visited Corkscrew on many occasions over many years. We love it! Quite a walk around the boardwalk but at the right time you can see so much wildlife. Our last visit was late December 2012 and didn't see as much wildlife as we had hoped although it was a little chilly for the herps, the pilated woodpeckers were very active though!

“Always a treat!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We have spent Feb in Florida three times now, and this sanctuary is always on our list of places to visit. The boardwalk makes it all so accessible, it is such a treat to walk through nature and observe everything. Take time to stroll.

“A delightful excursion”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Bird and nature lovers are sure to enjoy the Audubon-sponsored sanctuary. It's one of the last natural places in an area of Southwest Florida that is unspoiled. The guides are all volunteers and they are great.

“An Amazing Treasure!”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

This is truly something not to miss. The elevated boardwalk wound my mom and I through a variety of beautiful natural scenery. What a great way to see things! The wildlife was up close and gorgeous. Walking through the bald cypress stand was both awe inspiring and sad, knowing how little is left. Sanctuary guides stationed throughout the 2.5 mile walk were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. This really is a little slice of heaven. Don't miss it! Once on the boardwalk there are no facilities so be prepared.
