Owner description: Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

“great birding along the boardwalk”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

My Dad and I were recommended this by birders and were not disappointed. It's great to see undeveloped, natural environments in South Florida! The birds were used to the boardwalk parade of visitors so you could quitely walk along past quite closely without them taking flight, as well as good photo opportunities for more basic cameras. I would recommend binoculars and of course use the facilities and pack some water before heading out. The boardwalk makes mobility very easy.

“A mystical forest”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

Great walk, various terrains: old growth cypress forest, hardwoods, wet prairie, marsh. Go early (700-7:30) before the crowds, especially the 10:30 tours. Not too many birds due to the very dry winter but you could hear a lot you couldn't see. Sighted white egrets, cattle egrets, black & yellow crowned night herons, anhinga, adult and baby alligators, and best of all, a barred owl who posed for us to get spectacular pictures. Food is expensive in the cafe for the quality. Charging 25 cents for the bird list was very cheap after charging you $12 admission, and they had no brochures available to describe the numbered stops on the map.

“Something interesting to do while in Naples, FL”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

Pack up a picnic lunch and enjoy a few hours at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. There are a few picnic tables where you can eat in the quiet and beautiful surrounding; There are restrooms in the main building. If you enjoy long walks, this place could be a perfect place to visit - there are two walks on the boardwalk surrounding the swamp - one is the long way around (about an hour) and the other is the short way (maybe about half an hour or so). The boardwalk is level on either walk, so you don't need to worry about climbing. Nevertheless, wear comfortable walking shoes, bring insect repellent, sunscreen or cover yourself to protect from sunburn. There are several places along the way where you can sit and rest under a rest stop, but for the most part you will be exposed the whole time. Bring water and binoculars to enjoy the best of the site. As other reviews state, there are a few volunteers who have high powered scopes focused on special sightings, but it is fun to find things on your own. Can't recommend doing this during the summer, though - too hot and humid! There is a wonderful plant nursery a few hundred feet outside of the sanctuary; if you need garden foliage, this is a good place to buy trees, flowers, and schrubs after you have visited the swamp, for much less money than in town.

“A Walk with Nature”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

This sanctuary is well worth a visit. We enjoyed it so much, we went twice within a month. The first trip was during the day. The beauty of nature is on full display. We saw many birds and animals. There are volunteers all along the walkways to point out special sights. One had a powerful set of binoculars set up to allow us to see baby alligators on a bank iin the swamp, up close and personal. The second trip was at night (5:30 to 9:00 PM) during a full moon. It was a very different experience, as many animals are nocturnal. Again guides were available to point out interesting things. Well worth both trips.

“Nice Boardwalk”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

The boardwalk at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a nice way to experience South Florida's natural habitat. It is interesting to see how much conditions vary throughout the year. There are usually some interesting animals such as alligators, turtles, and various kinds of birds.
