“Nice picture of Micanopy history”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

I was not expecting much, since this is an extremely small town filled mainly with shops of antiques, a few restaurants and a great used book store (my fave in FL). We really enjoyed our informative visit and highly recommend this as a stop on your first visit to Micanopy, the location for the Michael J Fox gem, "Doc Hollywood".

I pulled off the turnpike? for gas and decided to explore. I went east into town following signs and was transported into an amazing early north Florida town. HUGE I mean GIANT ancient trees with the most spanish moss I've ever seen. No hurricanes hit here! It was after 6 pm and the village was deserted. OLD brick buildings and wooden houses from two centuries back. Been a Floridian for 45 years but had no Idea anything like this existed. You gotta see this place! I'll see the museum next time!

“Stop by.”
Reviewed June 1, 2012

As the name suggests, this museum is where you will find the history of Micanopy. It's worth a visit. You will find displays of Native American artifacts and items from an old general store among other things. The people who work there are very friendly and informative. You do not have to pay admission, but of course you are going to donate the requested $2.00. And perhaps buy a shirt. I did.

“A great place to learn the story of the Land and its Peoples”
Reviewed March 29, 2012

It is unlikely that you will be in Micanopy if you haven't planned to be there. If you are there to relax for the weekend then this museum is the perfect place to spend the lazy morning. Here you can browse through a wide spectrum of history. There are sections on the Seminoles & the Timucua as there is one on Bartram's Travels. You get to see the Civil War exhibits while those on the ice box, laundry equipment, Sibley Tent Stove or the beauty soap are nearby. There is an imposing "talking map" as there is a children's corner with a sign saying "Please Handle."

This place was a warehouse once so it has preserved some equipment from that era including the cashiers cage. The Coca Cola sign on the outside give the building its flavor. Signs like Royal Crown Cola. Best by Taste-Test" makes the museum blend in perfectly into the street that has a section lined with Antique shops.

The mandatory gift shop is a counter around the only staff member we found on the premises. There is also a well stocked brochure stand that is a micro library of sorts.

You can not afford to miss it if you are in the area. If you, for example, are visiting Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park then there is no reason for you to miss this. If you are staying over at Herlong, for example, for the night then please plan your arrival / departure to accommodate a visit to this place. There are no entry fees but I am sure you will not grudge the recommended donation.
