Saw The Beacon on TripAdvisor and booked it on the web - got the special advertised rate of $250+ per night, including "breakfast". Usually TripAdvisor will give the straight scoop on hotels and I have posted my views here. However, this place did NOT live up to the reviews. First, if you are looking for LUXURY or modern or updated or service, forget The Beacon. Second, if you are looking for "upscale", retro-updated Art Deco, quality, and value for the price, forget The Beacon. The hotel is a two star, overall, at BEST, when compared to standard, modern hotels (think Marriotts, Hyatts, etc.), and if you want that Art Deco feel, there are lots better choices on Ocean Avenue in SB. Under European standards (and it appeared to us that there were LOTS of European travelers booked there, tourists, etc., from other than U.S.), it may be a three star place. Here's the pluses: GREAT location (totally agree with posts on this one) - right on Ocean Avenue, beach right across the street, heart of the Art Deco scene at night; the rooms are clean; flat screen tv; bathrooms are clean and modern, if incredibly SMALL (I mean, you can hardly turn around and two people CANNOT fit in the bathroom at the same time); towels were great; sheets and bedding good. The minuses: "breakfast included" consists of a small yogurt or bowl of cold cereal, toast or bagel, small juice, and coffee. That's it. The rub: you can get a FULL breakfast anywhere on Ocean Avenue in the outdoor cafes (including world famous NewsCafe in the next block) for $5.00 or so. No bargain here. It was as promised, however -very "continental" all right. There is no where to pull up and unload luggage; no porter waiting to help you; we arrived at about 6:30 p.m. - street was packed, lots of foot traffic - it was drizzling - had to DRAG our luggage up the stairs ourselves into the lobby; got inside, three "bellman" hanging around chatting...not good. The hotel "lobby" has some updating and charming kitzy chairs and such - but that's the end of the modern updating. The hallways of the hotel (upper floors) look like something out of a fleebag rundown motel - SERIOUSLY in need of a makeover, all over the place. Kinda scary, actually. One elevator - size of a telephone booth; only two people can fit; really slow and even housekeeping has to use it - you can imagine - big hassle getting up and down, especially when you are on the fourth floor! Hotel is supposed to be non-smoking in its entirety - got to our floor and could smell cig. smoke - turns out employees like to smoke out on the back stairway - what??? Got some service on several complaints, but in general, there was a lot of "I don't know" and late attention to requests. It's a building with possibilities and great location - but needs LOTS OF WORK to warrant the prices they are charging. Never been to SB before, so found out where to stay next time - lots more luxury and service at other hotels on Ocean Ave for much less $$$. Will not be staying at The Beacon again....sad.

We enjoy reading our guest opinions, both the encouraging and other side reviews. This helps us to understand, set standards and improve our services to our present and future guest. The Beacon is an Art deco five Diamond boutique Hotel build in the 30’s. As you can imagine, a lot of history reside within these walls! Yes, our hotel rooms are small and our building raises to five floors which it’s the norm in most boutique Hotels. This offers our guest with a unique feeling and atmosphere that has been enjoyed by many of our visitors throughout the years. It is these experiences that continue to inspire us in our service and guest relations. The Beacon distinctiveness enables that great unique atmosphere, which we are known for all over the world, such as Friendliness, warm and personal touch between our guest and employees.

The hotel rooms are small because it is a boutique hotel of the art deco era and this remarkable reason provides that cozy feeling in all our rooms. Many past guests have commended and ask management not to change anything about this great feeling of the room. The rooms all come with great linens, modern Ihome Stations and flat screen TV’s .

The traffic on Ocean Drive is slow because it is most famous beach in the world bustling with visitors of all kind and a famous play ground for all kind celebrities. Traffic even get slower during special events such as NASCAR Miami, Food and wine festival, Boat show just a few to mention. Our past guests have always called the Hotel ahead of time to meet them on the street.
Ocean drive is known to provide that melting point for rich, famous and others to intermingle. We experience such toys as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes Benz, etc on display.

Breakfast is complimentary and continental we have full breakfast option on our website or at the restaurant on a discounted price. Should you have any questio, please email me at Derek@beaconsouthbeach.com or 305-674-8200 ext 614.

Stayed over the weekend. Location is perfect, in the middle of everything on Ocean Drive, right across the street from the beach. The room was quiet and I had no trouble sleeping. Room was clean and comfortable and staff was friendly and helpful. I had an ocean front room and the view was beautiful.

Caitlynne. her dad, and I stayed at the Beacon Hotel right on the strip of South Miami Beach in FL. First night we were there we had so much fun! We met some people who drove a Rolls Royce Phantom which was funny. We got pictures with a snake and a tropical bird. Caitlynne and I took more pictures with a Ring Tailed Lemur but it's the Madagascar monkey. Both of us got some awesome tans even though Caitlynne tan's way better then me hehe. We went shopping maxed out our credit cards and etc. We saw fireworks one night and loved it!

Location was great right on south beach and a quick walk across the street to the beach. The hotel staff were all very helpful and always pleasant. Quite a change from another hotel we stayed in down the street last year. Looking forward to staying there again next year.

The Beacon is a very good value for the price and location. I would not pick this place for a honeymoon (that kind of trip s/b a splurge, right?) but, if it's a quick weekend getaway, close to the beach/shopping, this is fine. The staff is more than accomodating and very pleasant. Yes, parking takes a while to come but just plan ahead-- every other hotel is having the same problem as it's only 1 street. The room is small - after having read the review, we opted to stay towards the back and did not hear a single noise from the street. We went and it was an unusually cold spell and it's true, no heat but it was fine. Someone said the water on the table was not marked that it was not complimentary. Not so -- the bottle was clearly marked that it was for sale. Someone also complained about the breakfast being meager. If a choice of juice, cereal or yogurt, bagel/croissant/toast or English Muffin, and coffee/tea is not enough for breakfast....I'm not sure how many calories you are consuming per day normally. It was a perfectly fine breakfast. The other choices on the menu were $5.95 so....it's still not expensive! We ate at the Cuban restaurant around the corner but, if you have a car, make a trip to Versailles. It's kind of like being in Times Square - you know it will be crowded and restaurants will be overpriced. But, you've got the gorgeous beach and if you've never done this before, stay on Ocean Drive once. Beacon is a reasonable, inexpensive, simple place to stay. Not fancy and the service is more than friendly. One downside - I thought the hallways in the hotel had a curious smell -- like some sort of strange disinfectant. Nobody else seemed to mind when I questioned so maybe I was just extra sensitive but I wasn't crazy about that.
