“Great location but not put to Marriott standards”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

Like other reviewers, I was not impressed by the quality of the hotel but view the location as a wonderful trade off. I was in town for two nights and wanted the convenience of the beach and the ability to take a nice run along the boardwalk and people watch. This hotel provided me both at a reasonable ($150/night) rate. I did have to overlook ongoing construction of the roof deck, 30 minute times to pull the car out of valet and lack of room service. Also note that the bathroom is tiny. My knees touched the sink when using the toilet, and you can reach the sink if standing in the shower...I'm only 5'7" s no nba basketball reach here. Nice property if traveling solo or willing to overlook standard Marriott convenience.

The hotel is located right at the corner of 14th street and Ocean Drive at Miami Beach. It is within walking distance to the heart of Art Deco district as well as Lincoln Road shopping area. Right across the street is the beach. The location is perfect. However, other than that, there is nothing else to be desired. The staffs were slow, inefficient and genuinely did not care about the long line of people waiting to check in. On average, it took about 20 minutes to check in one customer. The room is small, dark, and gum on the floor. Toilette items were given only on the 1st day, not the second day. You have to call to get them. I think the problem is that they are charging $400+ per night in winter times and still can completely sold out. Most of customers are one time and one time only customers. There is simply no incentive to be nice.

There is scarcely a clue that this is a Marriott hotel - part of the Autograph collection. This Art Deco gem on Ocean Drive has been lovingly preserved but not updated, and that is part of its charm. The reception area and the hallways feature the original fittings - admire the hallway lights and the balcony bar area. We had two rooms with splendid views to the Ocean - and of the Fourteenth Street restrooms which must be some of the most photogenic in the world. The rooms lack most of the gizmos of modern hotels and the bathrooms (shower only in our case) are small, but adequate; you do however need to open a window for ventilation. Remember how? Yet the rooms were pleasant and comfortable and somehow relaxing. The small wall-mounted air-conditioning unit was noisy but unnecessary so we unplugged it.
The continental breakfast featured exquisite but tiny pastries and the lobby restaurant serves a perfectly decent pasta in the evenings.
Allergy warning: If slick business hotels are your thing and you like your room to be the same every time, do not stay here. If however you go for a bit of character, there is much to enjoy here. Handy for everything too.

Room Tip: Request an ocean view.

We stayed at the Winter Haven for our Christmas Holiday.
Pluses: Fantastic location. On Ocean Drive but not in the terribly loud and crazy part. Nice beach. Usually hotels charge $25/chair on their private beach but because it's public beach, 2 chairs and umbrella were $35/day. If you really like art deco--you are in haven at this hotel. The lobby is gorgeous (although not terribly functional--see below) Staff is friendly, but there is a huge BUT (see below) Rooms are clean and rather small but it did not bother us, and if you really want room with a view, make this request specifically and good luck. Food is really great and portions are generous. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner there. Free WiFi in room.

Minuses: We really like the hotel. We hated the restaurant, but NOT FOOD AND SERVERS. The managers are terrible. One was an ever-not-in-the-mood-looking woman who was there in the morning. One morning she was seating with some personal friends (I guess) at a really nice table outside and all wait staff was serving them while guests were waiting for their breakfast. I think wait staff is really scared of her. I'll explain. We ordered coffee, 2 toasts and 1 order of oatmeal--easy, right? 45 minutes later we were still waiting. Her table was served cappuccinos, food, juice... whatever. Her guests engaged servers in conversation, showed them something on iphone, cracked jokes with them while customers were staring at their water glasses and empty tables. We signaled the hostess --the only person who locked eyes with us-- but she did not dare to interrupt their conversation with our server. We complained to our waiter as he was passing by. He said "it's coming up." In the meantime one couple left after waiting for a long time a family on the other side was getting really frustrated. All servers were somehow engaged with the manager's table.
Finally, AFTER her guests left, she came to apologize and brought a huge plate of fruit on the house. We stayed at the hotel for another 4 nights and she never said hello to us when she saw us. Just cant help herself.
The evening restaurant manager was making everybody nervous: servers AND guests. He has a very expressive way of communicating with people. He is loud and uses hands a lot, and rolls his eyes when talking to servers, and not afraid to show his frustration with them. All this is going on in front of guests.
They have a breathtaking lobby but they ruined the look by sticking a flat screen TV in the middle of the art deco mirror, literally. The bar is only 5 chairs and uncomfortable because it's located in the middle of the busiest spot in that lobby used by servers and kitchen stuff to leave and enter kitchen with trays of food and dirty dishes. The front door of the lobby is also used for the same purpose, plus guests of the restaurant coming in and leaving, plus guests of the hotel coming in and leaving with luggage, plus people with towels leaving for/going to the beach. It's very hectic and not inviting. Tip: use the side door on 14th to get easier access to the lobby when arrive/leave with your luggage.
The rooftop area is very nice and I spent long hours there, but there is not ocean view.

We pre-ordered two rooms for myself and my 3 children. We requested rooms with separate beds.
We got one room with kin-size bed and another with queen size. Not so nice for my elder 2 (aged 23 and 25) to sleep toghether in a small single bed!
No possibility to change to at least a room with a bigger bed until the forht day! Just come back tomorrow...Doesn't the hotel have a system showing reservations on check-outs....

Then on night, just after 12 the phone rung: "Front Desk, our system has chrashed what is you name?"
"And tell us your credit card number?"

Why on earth is the hotle connecting random calls like this? No calls just asking for a connection to a room should be connected!

Ans the windows were never washed from the outside - only on the front, never on the back.

We got a relatively large room by South Beach standards. The rooms and the hotel are beautifully restored, and we got an amazing rate making our stay great value. The room was also quiet at night which was great. There was one misunderstanding about late check out by 2.00pm: when we checked in the front desk person told us that was no problem (we had an evening flight out of MIA), but the next day when we were still in the room around 1.00pm they asked us to vacate it. The person at the front desk told us that late check out was not a possibility given that they were very full, and that the person who checked us in should never have told us it was OK. They were very apologetic about the misunderstanding. We would definitely stay there again.

I'll start by saying that I don't expect large rooms for a reasonable price in South Beach. The rooms are small, but I think Winter Haven is an excellent value and perfect location for a visit to South Beach. Winter Haven is a charming hotel. My family found the hotel to be very clean and quiet, and the staff were most accommodating. It is in a perfect location for exploring South Beach on foot. If I return to South Beach I would definitely consider staying here again.
