“Oversold, average, expensive, unique pool”
Reviewed March 22, 2010

Upon arrival on leg one of our honeymoon, there was no service with our bags, no one to greet us or take us to our room, and no information was provided about the hotel, its facilities or the surrounding area.
The inside of the hotel is generally dark and dingy. When we got to our room, sold as a 'sunset view' room, it was basically a dingy cupboard overlooking a side street and with a view of the hotel next door. By standing on the far left side of the window and on tippy toes I did manage to get a few sq cm of sky which I am told by the management would have resulted in a sunset view as this is the side of the building that the sun sets on. My poor husband had to go in search of an upgrade and we managed to get one of the best rooms (for a price!!) which was not dingy and actually had a balcony.
However once we settled in a bit we did grow to like the hotel a bit more, there is no denying that the pool area is beautiful. We always make an effort to be friendly to the staff and some were reciprocal and some just ignored us. It was difficult to get served some nights as although it was not that busy some of their "more important" guests were being schmoozed, however the food was excellent in the hotel. We enjoyed hiring bikes on a day when the weather was not so good. It is located on the beach and is not far from lincoln (lots of restaurants and shops) and ocean driv e (very touristy). We would recommend Doraku on Lincoln if you like sushi, and Romana on Espaniola Way for Italian. Dont bother with Quattro (expensive and very rushed)! South Beach is quite small but a nice place to go for a couple of nights. Beware of the 18% service charge which is automatically applied even for serving one drink, and 9% tax which inflates everything enormously. Quite simply the main problem with this hotel is the poor service.

I am glad we discovered the Raleigh based on recommendations from a few friends. Walkable to most all of South Beach. With all the craziness of South Beach it was like a little oasis to come back to off of Collins St.

This hotel is perfect if you don't want a scene where you're staying. We didn't. We ended up at the Delano for drinks most every night and to watch people, but we were SO happy to come home to the Raleigh... ahh.

Warning: Rooms are TINY, like NYC size hotel rooms. Simple but nicely appointed and the beds were decent. Loved the Kiehls bath products.

A heads up that the service isn't always reliable: A few mishaps: one morning we called for ice and it just never came. (They don't have an ice machine so you need to ask for it.) On our first day, "Natalie" at the front desk was by far the most apathetic and unhelpful front desk person I've encountered at ANY hotel in the nation (even at a Holiday Inn Express). My honey booked us a "Sunset View King" and when he inquired about getting a larger room her answer was (verbatim) "for a price" - I'm sure there are nicer ways to word that, e.g. "I'd be happy to upgrade you to an ocean view suite for an extra $XXX" Staff also seemed unknowledgeable about the surrounding areas and restaurants. Called for our car to be brought out one morning and 20 mins later we came down and it hadn't even come out. So do your own homework and know the staff needs some training.

Pool was divine and the food and drinks were fabulous. Loved the convenient coffee bar in the lobby - we came in a bit late one evening and noshed on the best French fries we'd ever tasted!

One night we met with some friends out at the Smith & Wollenskys steakhouse which was awesome - there is a huge an well-serviced outdoor bar - go for sunset and watch the cruise ships depart the harbor.

Just left the Raleigh after my third visit, and I still love it as much as I did te first time 5 years ago. This place is a classic and the pool is fantastic. Yes, there are bigger, glitzier hotels along Collins, but if you really want to experience art deco chic at it's best then this is the place for you. Sit in the bar and you can just imagine what it would have been like 70 years ago.

The bed was fatastic, the food great, and the staff on the whole very friendly.

Give it a go.

This is a tough review. Mainly because we spent 11 nights here which was way too many but also the weather was poor which we didn't expect close to Xmas. But let's start from the top: It's a beautiful old relic......it has charm and poise; it's comfortable and cosy and yes it has an amazing pool and its own patch of sand out the back as well as great beach service.

The service was great and we had plenty of long chats with various members of staff so after a while it felt like home.

We had booked interconnecting sunset view rooms.....cute and cosy....but you couldn't swing a cat in the room never mind the bathroom which served one at a time......a few days on a romantic break and you might be ok but anything longer and you'll be getting cabin fever. So we upgraded to a suite and a double which gave us a living room and more space. the suite also had a way larger bathroom with huge shower as well...so the whole family used this one as the boys couldn't manage to use their shower without soaking the whole bathroom.

The rooms were nicely furnished...beige/brown tones...earthy i guess....could get to you after a while :-) they provided lovely bath products from Kiehls...a real discovery.

lovely turndown service every evening....room softly lit by candlelight, strains of Bach on the radio and some nice cookies to munch on. We had quite a bit of room service and it was always prompt and nicely presented.

the hotel itself felt like it could do with some updating......the lifts for example had seen better days........and the internal hallways could do with brightening up. the common areas were lovely: i loved the little coffee bar in the lobby...very cool......and the main bar was also groovy. the main sitting areas were very inviting with comfortable chairs and sofas to lounge around on and sip Key Lime cocktails (to die for). Outside the restaurant had several sitting areas which helped as we had 2 days of torrential rain.

the pool area was fabulous...you have to see it to believe......its not just the pool but the pool cabana bar...many other areas to hang out in,,,the double day beds, cabanas, beach volleyball court......all this before you even get out onto the beach. and the pool service was excellent as well as the food. it was very reasonable as well pricewise.

the restaurant itself had a fairly limited menu and was pricey but everything they delivered was top notch and its a lovely place to sit.

they had a lovely boutique, mainly for the ladies but the lady in there was very helpful.

make sure you don't use the phone for long distance calls. we made a 16 min call to NZ and were charged $423 (they said that was the AT+T rate...i checked online and they charge $5 a min so no idea where they got that from)....i hit the roof over this and when we checked out they reduced it to $100.....still a reminder not to use hotel phones except for local calls.

the location is great...away from the noise but close to Lincoln Mall. the staff are very helpful when looking for restaurants or things to do....so just ask them. we had a great time in Miami and i would recommend the Raleigh but you need a suite unless you don't mind tiny bathrooms.

This is the second time i have stayed at The Raleigh and again it was an excellent experience. The staff could not have been friendlier, the location is excellent and the quality of food and drink is very good.
We used the front desk staff and concierge for recommendations and information and each time they excelled. On one occasion we asked one of the attendants at the beach about restaurant opening times and he used his own iPhone to get a contact and then call to get the information.
I would certainly recommend the hotel for somewhere that is true to its Art Deco architecture and provides a great location for food or just a few drinks before going out. The only disappointing thing is that the Sunday pool party doesn't run anyomre but hopefully that will be revived soon.

My Wife and I stayed at the Raleigh in November and we found the staff overall to be friendly and helpful at all times. The hotel was always clean and the room service was much better than we expected, in fact we could not fault the service. We read a lot of reviews before we booked the Raliegh and I am glad we took note of the positives rather than the few negitives as it turned out to be much better than we expected. You could not fault the location, although on busy Collins St it is far enough away from the noisy end of town but yet only a short walk away from the action, and of course you have the beach right at your door step.

Stayed at the Raleigh in September in a Sunset View Room and it was awesome! The room was much larger than I had expected and had a huge closet with a safe (that was easy to use). The very pretty receptionist was friendly and helpful at check-in and the Concierge who's name I have forgotten was very hip and very friendly - I even saw her at the Pool with her labtop helping other guests - so cool. The entire decor of the hotel is so classic just as described on the website and the POOL!!! Oh my god - the pool was paradise - and I live in Hawaii?! The pool was absolutely beautiful - we were there everyday from morning till night and even some wee hours of the morning - the staff were totally cool!! I LOVED the Church's lemonade at the pool bar - it was so refreshing, great mojito's too. I do not suggest the Dark N' stormy- yuck! Anyway, it would be very hard to go back to Miami and not stay at the Raleigh - it is the best. We got an amazing deal so I doubt we'll ever stay at this hotel at the same price we paid in September - I don't care I plan on only staying at this hotel for my next visits to Miami. Ohhh yea and the bed in the room was incredibly comfortable too - slept like a baby. Cannot wait for my next visit - Enjoy!!!!!!
