The Colony Hotel
Ranked #152 of 212 Hotels in Miami Beach
Reviewed May 8, 2014

We have never have been to Maimi and being interested in design we had searched for a place to stay in the Art Deco area of South Beach. We looked at many hotels, narrowed our search to about 4 and eventually chose The Colony Hotel right on Ocean Drive.
I think it was a good choice. We are smack dab in the middle of the beach scene and are able to walk the area to view all the fascinating buildings.
We arrive late afternoon on Saturday and the joint is jumpin' so to speak. We are not partying types and we walk into party central, but we are there to see what Miami has to offer and the Ocean Drive street scene is part of what South Beach is.
The Colony has leased out most of the lobby and sidewalk space in front of the building, it is now a restaurant/bar. I think this is rather unfortunate because it takes away from the "hotel experience". You now arrive at the hotel and the front desk is a dismal counter at the back of the lobby. The front section has a few tables and a bar, none of which is in keeping with the Art Deco decor and frankly tacky. The image of a entering a grand hotel from the 1920's is dissipated quickly.
The front desk attendant is very personable and has us checked in very quickly. We are given a room with an ocean view. This means on the front of the building and overlooking the sidewalk cafes and bars that line the east side of the drive. It is Saturday and I suspected the noise will continue late into the evening. I am right, the bars stay open until 5am, but we manage to drown out the noise by leaving the AC on. We normally would have just used the ceiling fan but with the AC going we both sleep well and the street noise is not an issue.
The room itself is small but has been remodeled lately and done appropriately in what looks to be an early 20th century style. It is very comfortable and serves our needs well.
The exterior of the building could use some work. The lighting, an integral part of being on the drive, is not functioning properly with some lights hanging from their mounts and others like the "O" in Colony burned out on two sides.
Overall it does not cost much to stay here but with a few changes the experience could be much better. The building would be much improved if a regular maintenance schedule were to be implemented. If the lobby was changed back to its original glory, a grand entrance with a place for the guests to sit and watch the comings and goings, with perhaps a more civilized street cafe it could make the traveler feel special and the hotel could command a greater fee.
As a place to stay, The Colony Hotel is fine but as a place of fantasy it does little to promote dreaming.

We were staying in this hotel for 2 nights and found the hotel to be very good. Staff was very friendly and the rooms are spacious and clean. Location is great, straight on Ocean Drive. Beware of the restaurant out front, which is not owned by the hotel. Actually beware of most bars/restaurants at Ocean Drive, most of them are ridiculously overpriced.

Ill start with saying location is perfect. right across from the beach. 5 mins to the shopping on collins. was great.
the hotel - grosse!! just grosse. it smelled to start with. the elevator didnt work so we had to carry our suitcases up 3 flights of stairs.
i saw a mouse when i opened the door to my floor from the stair case. the smell i couldnt even get over. it was hideous. there were bugs inside our bathroom it was just yuk.
when i checked out, the guy was sleeping at reception. i had to wake him up to check me out.
never again would i stay here.

Hi,
Stayed at the Colony for four nights, 31st March to 4th April 2014. I was a bit wary as had read some excellent and some terrible reviews. The terrible reviews are ridiculous, moaning about rip off prices at the bar/restaurant next to hotel. Firstly I don't think the Hotel owns these, like many on the strip they are leased. The prices are expensive, especially drinks, but they are no dearer here than an other cafe restaurant on the strip. It is the South Beach after all and you have to pay these prices. About $8 a beer $16 a spirit and $32 a cocktail - plus sales tax plus mandatory 20% tip.
Anyway back to the Colony, it is a beautiful Art Deco hotel. Very clean, great staff, towels and bedding changed daily. Remember it is an old building so room sizes small but perfectly adequate. We absolutely loved it. The location is great, as you would expect as built 90 years ago so premier spot directly across the beach.
But the big thing is the price, very very competitive compared to other hotels on the strip.
And you need to remember this, you are getting a great experience at an excellent price.
I cannot believe some of the negative reviews, the Colony is a charming hotel, very well run and a delight. I recommend highly. Many thanks to the hotel staff and big big thanks to Mr Nunez.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your kind words about our hotel. We want to hear from all our customers and welcome criticism as it also helps us improve. That said, there are often negative reviews about things that are out of our hands such as expensive drinks, obligatory tips and the building/rooms themselves. Thank you for supporting our hotel. We were most happy to serve you and hope you will stay again soon.

Stayed here for one night at South Beach and the hotel was decent enough considering the location. It is an old hotel, and the rooms could need to be freshened up. Free wifi and the room was clean enough ( not super-clean, but ok.. ). The rooms were decent size and we had two rooms with three persons pr room. If you want a quiet hotel i recommend moving further up the beach. DO NOT eat at the restaurant located outside the hotel. overpriced and crap, and is why this review only got a Average and not Very Good from me.

Room Tip: Away from the street if you dont like sound

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying with us. We are sorry to hear about your experience at the restaurant. The restaurant is on site, but it is leased and as such separately managed. We will discuss the state of the room with the Housekeeping Supervisor. Thank you for your comments.

We had a 3 night stay in Miami, South Beach at this hotel. The package we'd taken was room only. The room was large and spacious with a good view in the heart of the south beach area. That was also a drawback, the night life was very noisy disrupting a good nights sleep.
Although there was a wardrobe there was no real facility for clothes to be stored. A fridge was provided which again was to store items there being no means to make a hot drink let alone anything else. Watch the prices in the restaurant, agree them before ordering, as they vary considerably once the bill arrives. An experience to stay there but one we will not be repeating I am afraid to say. Taking a photograph of the outside was the best part and you do not need to stay at the hotel to share that experience!

Dear Guest,

We are sorry you would not repeat your stay with us. We have taken steps to reduce the noise that comes from outside, for example putting in hurricane windows, unfortunately some of it is out of our control. While we do not have dressers with drawers in the room, we do offer shelf organizers that can hold your belongings. The restaurant is on site, but it is independently owned and operated. Please do not hesitate to contact the hotel manager directly should you wish to discuss further. Thank you.
