“Friends Wedding at The Setai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2011

This hotel is very expensive, very luxe and extraodinary. My friend had his wedding here back in 2009 and my wife, a friend and I had a two room suite overlooking the ocean for 3 nights. The suite was spacious (i think 1400sq ft), gorgeous (clean lines) yet simple with a zen like feel. The hosting area, beds (fantastic sleeps) and bathroom were all fit for a king (Usher and Gilbert Arenas were staying at the hotel while we were there)

The outdoor lounge area just beyond the lobby also had a zen like feel. We spent some time here at dusk and the atmosphere was surreal. The asian theme inside and outside the hotel flows effortlessly.

The pool consisted of 3 different pools at different temperatures. Not sure if this is the norm in South Beach but we found this to be over the top. The pool area and pool staff were fantastic. Drinks and pool side pizza was flowing daily.

We at dinner at the thai fusion restaurant. I don't remember anything in particular but do remember that it was delicisou thai fusion. The bar there is also spectacular. If you can get a seat, you're in luck.

There are many little inexpensive places to eat after a night or day of drinking and partying. Most placed around there boasting signed pics of celebraties that have eaten there after a few cocktails. We also took a 10 minute cab ride for to Fogo du Chao one night. Another great dining experience.

If you can afford to stay the Setai... go for it. World class servce and ammenities.

Room Tip: Get up early if you want a bed at the pool or ask the concierge to book one for you.

Very good stay at the setai. We stayed 3 nigth in the tower. Big rooms, personalised service, good beach service and great pools. Asia staff is extreemly helpfull and put the non asian staff a bit at a lower service level. However this is just impression, all staff are extreemly friendly and willing to please the guests. Only downside is the price 1500usd/nigth, but if you can afford you get something for it in return.

This hote was indeed very expensive but in many ways worth it. Upon check-in we were immediately given refreshments and moist towels. The front desk receptionist who checked us in showed us to our room and informed us of all the features/controls in contained. The rooms are immaculate, very zen-like and comfortable at the same time. All the rooms have an oversized soaking tub which was probably my favorite feature. Other reviews complained of the rooms being too dimly lit...with this I disagree, All the lights have dimmer switches so you can set the lighting to your individual prederance. Housekeeping is twice per day and they do pay attention to every detail (at turndown the utliize blackout curtains and leave a nightly dessert which was always very good).

The service in the hotel was outstanding. From the pool/beach attendants to the bar tenders to the concierge...it is really all about the guest at this hotel. Another nice point, it is never overly crowded and doesn't get nearly as loud as other South Beach hotels.

The pool area is magnificent. As stated in the other reviews, three pools all at different temps. The lounge chairs are beds which are very comfortable. Same thing at the beach...our lounge chairs were basically a queen sized bed. Also, there is wireless internet at the pool and beach for no extra charge.

This hotel is definitely worth the extra price if you can afford it. They do not charge resort fees which other hotels do, no additional charge for pets (for us this is great), and no charge for internet.

Spent 5 days in October 2011. Overall, we got what we wanted in terms of easy access to the beach, a pool to do some laps and good food. However, the stay was not necessary always pleasurable. The following observations were made:

Pros
1. Balinese staff (staff rotated by GHM company) were superior, attentive, pleasant and quick
2. Amenities on property were good – pool, gym and spa
3. All pool staff were fantastic and attentive. Again, the Balinese staff were far superior in addressing guest needs; doing follow ups; and ensuring that guest did not have to wait too long for any requests.
4. Beautiful grounds.
5. Food at restaurant, in-dining and poolside café were amazing.
6. House keeping were consistently good, thorough and quick.
7. Doormen were attentive, remembered guests and treated everyone with courtesy.
8. Guest room flooring was wonderful and practical for the location and weather.
9. The guestroom bed was simply perfect and comfortable for a restful evening.
10. Guest room toiletries were very luxurious.
11. Property and staff treated all guests, regardless of sexual orientation, well.

Cons
1. Non-Balinese staff were inattentive, sometimes argumentative and not very knowledgeable.
2. Frontdesk staff were pleasant but inexperienced; were polite but slow; always had a smile but seem faked and put on; tried to resolve problems but never understood the needs of guests:
a. Seeking clarification for charges and staff was not able to explain, had to call the restaurant that were not able to explain and then to argue with guest that it was only a .30-cent difference!
b. Asking what newspapers guest wanted in the morning and not recording it. Then when guest called the next morning for why not delivered, paper only arrived for that day.
c. Check-in was too slow. Guests arrived after long flight and only wanted to get out of travelling clothes. Staffs seem more interested in following the process of sitting down guests; talk about amenities and then to the room with a rather lengthy explanation of lighting switches and where everything was. Again, staff seems to forget guests need to relax and get out of travelling clothes.
d. Check-out was slow. Cab waited for 4 minutes while staff attempted to figure out and explain costs. One guest waiting in the cab while the other waited for front desk staff to boot up screen, contact different areas of hotel for clarification, go through multiple screens to get a print out and then to go through the process of asking unnecessary pleasant questions, knowing that the other guest is in the cab.
3. Room was too dark. Lighting was dim and not appropriate. Unable to watch tv with bed lights on. Too many switches for only a few lights. TV screen was small for room size.
4. Layout of room not functional or enjoyable. The sofas all around the windows created a smaller space; were not comfortable to sit; tub in the room under the tv is not ideal nor practical; having the bathroom all over the entrance made it difficult to appreciate or use; bed tables should have drawers; and there should be a comfortable chair by a window for guest to appreciate the views and the architecture.
5. Bar staff were proficient in serving drinks and cocktail experience but inconsistent in customer service. It appeared that some guests received more attentive service than others.
6. Toilets required at least 2 flushes each time.
7. In-room charge of $8 for a bottle of water was perhaps unnecessary. Especially since bottled water is provided by pool, beach, gym and turn down service.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, don't stay in the art demo building rooms. Spend a little more for the tow...

My fiance and I stayed in The Setai in August. For nearly $500 US a night (on sale!), we were expecting something spectacular. We had a room in the Art Deco tower. It was well appointed; however, for the price I was expecting something larger, with a view (our room overlooked the street). The common areas of the hotel were beautiful; however, the restaurant was ridiculously overpriced ($75 for brunch without alcohol per person).

Just returned from 4 nights at the Setai and many raves for the property and the staff and a few fyi's. Did a lot of research regarding hotels in Miami and went to The Setai as my wife and love quiet pools and oour not big beach people. This hotel is made up mainly of European and South Americans so it adds to the international feel of the hotel.
The positives:
-The property is in pristine condition. As we were their during the off season they were during minor cement refinishing and work around the property but their was no noise or problems due to it.
- The pool attendants were out of this world. We wish we could have brought Ago's bck to NYC with us but wish him the best when he retunrs to Bali this month.
- Loved that daily free bottles of complimentary still water were left in the room (not just at bed time)
- Liked that their was free wifi throught the property including by the pool. Not many luxury chains offer this anymore.
- The breakfast staff were amazing and always went out of their way to help.
- We were in a courtyard room and the room was perfect. During the off season they do not have the weekend DJ's so noise to worry about.
The Cautions:
- The front desk/ and concierges staff not very knowledgable of the area and dinning options. They will give you a list but if you ask for a place to get Pallella they recomend Italian restaurants.
- For all the luxury of the resort the towels in the room and the pool were not very soft and plush (just surprising based upon all other luxury as Aspery soaps...)
- Try to get breakfast included in your rate (American Express Platnium) as buffet for two is $92 including tip and taxes.

Overall this hotel was a great find for a few day get away as it was a little piece of S.E Asia in the craziness of South Beach. As some one who has stayed at many Four Seaons and other Luxury hotels this property stacks up really well to those.

Room Tip: Try not to face shore club as pool music very loud.
