We arrived at Bikini hostel at 9pm after a long day of travelling. When we got to reception, there was a girl on the desk who said she would be with us in two minutes then disappeared. We must have waited about 20 minutes before she came back to check us in and there was no apology for the delay. Whilst we were waiting we were reminded on a TV screen above the reception desk of the beautiful rooms available and as we had seen on the photos on the website before we booked. We were told we had a private twin room and were happy with this given the lovely photos of the rooms we had seen. We had been travelling for a month and stayed in numerous hostels, having high hopes for this one in particular.

However, it was totally different story when arriving in our room. I imagine the photos on the website are from years ago. Access to the private room is through a 10 bed dorm and all 12 of you share 1 toilet and 1 shower (in the same room). The room was absolutely tiny - we couldn't have two of us stood up in the room at one time and had to take turns getting ready in there. It was basically a cupboard. The beds were uncomfortable, one of them didn't even look like the sheets had been cleaned, with black hairs all over it. The mattresses had massive dips in the middle - obviously haven't been replaced for years. Our first room's AC was broken so the second day we moved into a different room. The pillows stank of smoke (of both kinds if you know what I mean) and the beds were very loud and creaky. In general the place was filthy, including the bathroom.

The website shows a swimming pool - it is not a swimming pool - it is basically a big paddling pool and looked absolutely filthy (we didn't dare get in).

The food and drinks are overpriced and they charge you 18% service on anything you buy (even though you're going to the bar yourself). You're also not permitted to bring in your own drinks.

We were wondering why the hostel had so many good reviews on Hotels.com, Hostelworld etc. and this became clear after talking to a few people staying in the hostel. The hostel will award people extra nights stay or $20 for beer if you leave a good review online. Says it all really. No amount of beer would make me lie about this awful place and we certainly didn't want to spend any longer there.

To enter the rooms you need a code for the door - apparently they don't change these that often so whoever was in the room before and had checked out, could easily get back in. There are lockers provided but they only work with certain padlocks so hardly anyone used them. It didn't feel like a very safe environment.

We stayed here a total of 3 nights and we couldn't wait to leave. We had read reviews online saying that no refund was offered if you decided to cancel your room booking so decided to stick it out and spend as little time in the hostel as possible.

I've seen 'management' respond to adverse reviews on TripAdvisor very inappropriately so I am looking forward to hearing what their response is to this review.
