Jazz on South Beach Hostel
Reviewed February 5, 2013

The hostel is very well located, literally minutes from the beach, a lovely beach too South Beach. A fairly basic hostel, I stayed in a 4 bed mixed dorm. The dorm was a little disappointing, very basic beds that were of a metal frame construction and susceptible to movement. I had a top bunk and the bed fellow downstairs could be felt easily when they moved. There were no individual lightsfor each bed, but just main lights which were very bright when turned on by inconsiderate roomies late on. Lockers were small, only big enough to put a few small items in, your case/holdall/rucksack had to be stored under the beds. Although that was the case, I never felt there was a security issue with the stuff. Didn't astop me locking everything though....

The bathroom/toilet were located in the room itself. All modern and clean - cleaners came in every day so dirt was never an issue!

The staff were helpful and courteous, well almost entirely, one had had a bad day I guess, but they were very informative and helpful too.

Communal area was comfy enough, free wifi on your phone and laptop, also 4 pcs for hire at $2 per 20 minutes surfing.

I would stay here again, in fact I have already booked. As far as hostels go, I would give it a 7 out of 10 for the room alone. I would have preferred big lockers in the room ( you can store your luggage for $4 a pop ), a personal light too on a sturdier bed. The location however is great, so that helps the score a lot!

Room Tip: If you want sleep, opt for a 4 bed dorm or push the boat out and get a private room.

Changed over from Deco Walk Hostel on Ocean Drive...and couldnt have been a better move. The social area outside and in makes it so easy to meet people. Maybe it was just the people I met that made the stay so much fun but the hostel is 5-10 walk from the beach and 2 blocks from walgreens for alcohol. The people in the hostel werent the friendliest tbh ..but for the price Jazz was a good choice :)

If you want to stay somewhere a bit more low key this is the place. It's south of the main south beach strip, but still easy enough to walk clubs, shops and restuarants. One of the best things about it is that the beach is a block away.
The staff were helpful with any enquiries and great at pointing out some little fantastic value for money cafes. If you do extend your stay here, rebook online because they charge you more if they book you in person.
There are always plenty of people hanging around the lobby. Easy to make friends if you are traveling by yourself. The hostel has people organise pub or club crawls, so if you want to party there is plenty of opportunity.
Everyone knows that everything is overpriced in Miami. Staying in a 8 person dorm, you could say you get what you paid for at this hostel. The beds aren't that comfy, the lockers are not very secure and small, the rooms are very small and try sharing a bathroom with 8 other girls in Miami. But it is cheap!
They served pancakes in the morning, which seemed to be the American staple amongst hostels. The kitchen itself was very small, so get in early if you plan to cook for yourself.

1. Got bitten badly by bedbugs, which followed me back to my country via my luggage which I had to store kn the dorm floor, and required fumigators to treat.

2. Bad service...laundry room out of service, internet wifi often offline and same for the pay to use computers. Night out to club Mansion and we paid 20 bucks expecting the bus service then told we had to walk all the way there, girls were told to wear heels and this was hard on them, only to get in and a bottle of beer cost 15 bucks! They should have forewarned guests. Some left and lost their 20 bucks cover.

3. Was there almost 2 weeks and in that time the dorm room floor was never vacuumed, swept or polished, nor my bedding changed. Floor was always sandy and gritty and disgusting. I begged the now 'outsourced' cleaners to clean the floor and all they did was come in with a dirty mop and did about 5 swipes on the floor. Basically just wet the dirty floor. Fridges un kitchen ar not big enough to accommodate guests and were filled o the brim and dirty with spilt food and sauces everywhere. Needs to be cleaned more often.

4. Very rude staff called Merlin...an angry woman you would not want to bump into in a dark alleyway. Nasty, nasty, nasty! I saw several guests check out early because she was rude to them. She talks in a condenscending wa and treats guests like criminals. No respect. Don't waste time trying to figure her bad moods out. It's not your fault, that's just the way she is. She is losing the business a lot of money and repeat business.

5. Beggars / former guests ar allowed to come back into the premises and spend the night sleeping rough on their tattered worn out sofas with gaping holes. These hard luck non-paying former guests harass paying- guests for money, favours or to flirt with the girls.

6. WORST sofas ever! The sofa's in the common room have collapsed and need to be replaced. One should not feel swallowed by a sofa. Also the chairs in the dining area need to be replaced.

7. The air conditioner in the dining area was permanently switched off, with a stern note warning guests not to touch it. However the dinning area is right next to the sweltering kitchen, so you can imagine how hot it got, and how nasty and uncomfortable it is to be sweating profusely whilst trying to have a meal, especially as there is no window you can crack open for some cooling fresh air.

Jazz on South Beach is a terrible hostel. Save your money and head to South Beach Hostel, which is only 3 minutes walk away.

Room Tip: Don't bother. Go elsewhere. Or you'll get eaten alive by angry bed bugs.

I've came there accidentally, because I needed desperately a place to stay in Miami Beach for one night on my trip north. I came there and I found bunch of great people and it turned out, that I prolonged my stay there for another day. If I would have more time, I would stay there longer.

I highly recommend this hostel. I came with a friend and we booked the private room. Perfect : mini fridge, safe working well, good bathroom and bed. Away from the lobby so no noise.
The hostel was clean and not noisy. At night there are two staff members that look for people not to make noise after their parties.
I didn't want to take a dorm because it is way more unsafe and noisy than a private room.

Unfortunately the housework wasn't made everyday. The breakfast is to pass : "home made" pancakes really bad made of a disgusting pancake mix and and they give you some chocolate chips to eat with...

The staff is nice (boys are) but there is a woman (fake blond hair) who was just really rude. Saying rude not because she talked bad but because she didn't talk at all !! Not even hello, nothing and mainly bad looks !

The lobby is nice, there are computers that you can use (not free) BUT there is the wifi that works also on the patio.

The patio is nice and closes at 10pm so no noise. Also the staff make sure that people after 11pm dont stay in front of the hostel but a bit farther so they don't bother the neighbors.

For people who want to party it is a good place. There is a promotor (cute guy) that comes every night at 10:30pm and gives you a wristband (pay a bit for it) and then brings you to the place (bar, clubs).

The beach is 2 minutes from the hostel and you can rent (leave your id at the front desk) some beach games, umbrellas... handful !

Really nice place to stay for cheap !

Room Tip: Private room are better and only a few bucks more that the dorms

The hostel was pretty clean even if beds were not confortable at all, rooms are pretty small. We were 8 girls in the dorm and it was too much. We had problems with roomates who comes at 5pm and screams and slams the door, very disrepectful. We had to complain at the front desk in the morning because of that. They were nice and we didnt have other issues with noisy roomates. the location is very good, beach is just around the corner, so it is very convenient for that. On the other hand, atmosphere was average, not as good as in the other hostels around, we had to be silent after 11pm and it was in a residential area in south beach. So there is nothing crazy about this hostel.
