Owner description: An area of Miami Beach noted for its concentration of over 800 Art Deco buildings all within one square mile. Consider joining the walking tour which takes you past the white- and pastel-colored stucco buildings beautifully restored to their former splendor thanks to the Miami Design Preservation League.

The striking thing here, is that all the images you have ever seen before appear to be on one side of the road. On the other side, is scruffy strips of lawn and planting, the sea wall and loads of homeless people, general slacker types and rather down at heel. You`ll feel uncomfortable even in the daytime, let alone at night. The actual art deco bits are nice, a walk up and down and a bit to eat should do it. Unless you want to hit the beach. Half a day will cover it, assuming you find somewhere to park!

The main problem with viewing this district is finding somewhere to park - the secondary problem is being able to afford to park. It costs 15 dollars a day or one dollar 75 cents per hour. A word of warning, some of the parking meters are faulty so you could lose your money. It's best to view the buildings from across the road. If you walk on the building side of the road you are just walking through restaurant tables which have spilled onto the pavement. It's quite a long walk from 5th street to 15th, so give yourself a couple of hours to appreciate it properly.

To my previous knowledge the Art Deco Historic District was its own little area to view the historic buildings and take pictures while taking a leisurely walk. In between the historic buildings there are strip clubs and bars. This was NOT how it ended up being. The Art Deco Historic District is swarmed with drunk people in bathing suits and while I was there there was a fight in the street. It was a beautiful little street, then all the party goers took over. I would highly recommend this if you are interested in NIGHT LIFE... but not if you want to relax.

We didn't expect Collins Street to be torn apart from one end to the other due to construction. And, being Miami, the work covered everything for miles in dust and dirt. To get a fair view of the Art Deco District was therefore tainted. Like another reviewer mentioned we were forced over onto Ocean Drive where the bars were blowing wild with drunken revelers and semi dressed dancing girls. So neither the time nor the circumstance was conducive to a fair appraisal. We will do it another time but, from our experience, a word of wisdom. Check out what's happening in Miami Beach, construction and all, before you go.

We stayed in the Beacon Hotel on Ocean Drive, and the entire Historic Art Deco neighborhood there was a delightful treat to look at. The colors and styling are so different and charming! At night on Ocean drive there are so many restaurants to choose from, but be prepared to spend a lot of money because you are paying a high cost to sit in that real estate for a meal. I went for a morning beach jog and enjoyed the art deco lifeguard houses. A short walk away on Collins Ave there are great shops like Zara, Intermix, Club Monaco, etc. I really enjoyed visiting Historic South Beach.
