Owner description: An area of Miami Beach noted for its concentration of over 800 Art Deco buildings all within one square mile. Consider joining the walking tour which takes you past the white- and pastel-colored stucco buildings beautifully restored to their former splendor thanks to the Miami Design Preservation League.

A great step back in time. The variety of foods at sidewalk cafés was really good. After dark is best.

We had an excellent evening tour on 5/22/14. The tour costs $20 and is done by volunteers from the Miami Design Preservation League. Our guide was knowledgeable and offered great details about the buildings. It was a walk through history of both the architecture and the city of Miami Beach. Our guide was able to bring us into some of the hotel lobbies. You really did feel like you were on a cruise ship in some of these lobbies. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and is well worth it.

I'm not well versed in architecture but I like photography and thought the old hotels would make a nice set of photos. Perhaps I should have taken the tour, but I prefer to go solo. Perhaps I was there too early- I showed up to south beach and ocean drive around 8-9am. But overall south beach itself was dirty with trash. Ocean drive was barricaded up and down ruining the chance for good photos. The hotels were interesting, perhaps better at night with neon lights?

Art Deco has so much history. Go about, explore the buildings. You can do walking tours on your own or guided if you so choose. There are several areas to stop and get food, explore the culture. If you don't know much about Art Deco, take one of the many tours and listen as the guides explain it all to you.

The official Art Deco Walking Tour given by the Miami Design Preservation League was a highlight of our stay in South Beach. The guide, Howard, was very knowledgeable and the tour was very well organized and conducted, not to mention very informative. Definitely worth the time and small fee and will give you a different perspective on the area.
