“Great Hotel : Don't know what people ar complaining about !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2009

We stayed for 3 nights prior to our cruise.
Upon arrival by taxi our bags were collected and taken into reception where a very friendly and chatty receptionist was waiting to check us in. We were taken to our room which was exactly what you would expect when you pay for a standard room. Clean and comfy. We had complimentary breakfast with our booking which had a wide range of choice from cereal to pastries to cooked breakfast. The hotel is right on the boardwalk and onto the beach. Great location for beach lovers. There is a bus stop outside the hotel (and 1 round the corner that takes you down to south beach for $2 and took about 15 /20 mins. Great value & a great way to get there and be nosey at the same time. It is located far enough away from the noise of south beach but close enough to get there without any hastle at all. We really enjoyed our stay at the Riu and would be happy to recommend it to anyone

We stopped at the hotel a couple of weeks ago and i have to say it is not a place i would ever go back to, even if they paid me!!! the breakfast was ok, but same every single day so got a bit tedious towards the end of the holiday. The rooms were dingy and dont look great at all, especially with the view of the derelict building right next door, the room cleaners were constantly moody, and not overly polite. This hotel is definately designed to fleece every penny you have from you. we bought a prepaid phone card from the hotel and told there were no added charges when using hotel phones, suprise suprise, they charged us doulble on the bill of what the card cost us just for using the hotel phones. The lift was out of oreder on the 10th floor for about a week and since me and my girlfriend have 2 kids had to use the stairs, not so easy with 2 kids and a double pushchair. We decided to eat in the hotel resteraunt one night me and my girlfriend and eldest boy who has just turned 2, we were charged for 3 buffet meals, even though my son ate a tiny bit of what was on mine and my partners plate and then the cheek added a 15% service fee for the pleasure. The hotel was too far from anywhere really and the only other restraunt nearby was 15 mins walk up at the marriott which was far better. And to top the holiday off, upon checkout we had a 200 dollar bill on top of the 250 dollar a night for the hotel room, for the cots which we were told would be supplied within the cost via my tour operator.

a real disappointment

If you're looking for an overpriced hotel that is dated then this is the place for you. The service was poor but they are well trained in the art of "nickel and diming you". ie..Would you like a safe in your room....$2 more per night (on top of the $220 USD I was charged for the room (just one example). I do more than 150,000 miles a year on business and would never stay here again. The value is just not there. It's not open yet but when the "W" does open down the street, this hotel will be hurting

On reading other reviews after booking this hotel, it would be fair to say we were more than a little apprehensive of our stay, however this turned out to be unnecessary.

Check-in was painless and the staff spoke perfect english. Our room on the 5th floor was very good overall. It appears the hotel have started to update the rooms as we had brand new clean, comfy beds, curtains and furniture etc. However, the bathroom was quite old and dated (but very clean and in good working order). We found the lifts could get a little busy at peak times but this was never a problem.

The complimentary full American breakfast was excellent, with plenty to choose from. (Probably the best breakfast I've ever had outside top 5-star hotels).

The pool area again was very good. Set in tropical gardens with free beds, towels etc. The only downside was that the hotel is mainly occupied with continental European visitors, which inevitably means people do reserve most of the beds in prime areas, despite the hotel rules stating this is not allowed it does go on and the hotel does not stop it.
Also beware the extortionate prices at the pool bar ($8.40 for two small Coke's).

A definite issue worth bearing in mind is the hotels distance from Ocean Dr. (40 mins walk) and the Lincoln Road area (20 mins walk). We attempted this on our first night but didn't bother again. Luckily we had a rental car which we drove down and parked in one of the several multi-storey parking lots in South Beach (17th and Meridian Ave for Lincoln Rd, 12th and Collins Ave. for Ocean Dr.). The hotel charges $16 a night for valet parking.

Overall a good hotel at a very good price!

  • Liked — Pool area and the excellent breakfast
  • Disliked — High drinks prices at pool bar

I stayed in this hotel twice: two nights at the beginning of december (just after flying from Europe to Miami), and two nights before flying back to Europe.
The first time we reserved the room from hotel website, paying about 150$ per (standard) room per night, breakfast and taxes included; curiously, the price, for exactly the same room and service, was higher (by 20% or so) if booked from Spain than from Italy. For the last two nights, we reserved from the hotel lobby, through the hotel website, and found a cheaper rate, about 110$ breakfast and taxes included.

In both stays, the rooms (at the 7th and 9th floors) were ample and clean; while facing the main street, traffic noise was well filtered out by the double pane windows.
Nor I heard people chatting or making some other noise from the adjacent rooms.
Both elevators were working, and wait times were a couple of minutes at most.

We had enrolled in the RiuClass program, and in both stays we found in the room a welcome letter together with a Miami Beach calendar (the hotel appears in one of the pictures), a nice present indeed.

They have a good and efficient valet-parking service, which costs 15$ per night (you can check the car in and out how many times you wish), plus of course the tips. We never had to wait long (5 minutes at most) for the car to be delivered to us.

The buffet breakfast is excellent, a large variety of fresh, good quality food with basically everything you want (fruit, eggs, pastries, cheese, hams, yogurt, coffee, etc.); the service was helpful and corteous.

The only minor negative points were that wifi connection was only available in the lobby (ask for the password at the reception desk), and that one morning the (I gather) maids were making quite some noise talking together in the corridors and knocking the doors (this was at 7.30-8.00).

All in all, we have been quite satisfied by the hotel, and, should we go back to Miami again, we would definitely consider staying at the Riu hotel again.

I read so many reviews about this hotel I was not sure what to expect.

Check-in was okay bit did not understand the receptionist. Room was
On the 6th floor, very basic and clean, this is not a 4star standard hotel
more like a 3*. Be warned the walls are very thin you can here load chatter
and we could even here snoring through the wall.

Lifts are a joke they were both working but every time they came down or up
to the 6th floor they were always full.

Breakfast buffet was okay nothing special loads of salad and cold meats
not my sort of breakfast. This hotel seems to cater more for the german
clients. Staff seem to speak german but not English!.

Pool area was nice but again all sun beds taken by 830am each bed would have one trainer or book on it (it was joke) luckily I preferred the beach which was nice and clean.

The S bus stop does stop outside the hotel to go to the mall but again be warned
it does take approx an hour as the bus stops and nearly every stop, we got a taxi back
which cost about 30 dollars,

This hotel was to far away from everything, we stayed in Sunny Isles before
which was much better, as ocean drive is about a 30 min walk and there is hardly
anything around where this hotel is.

On check out we were even charged to have our bags stored £1 dollar per bag ( this
hotel is all about making money) I have never paid to store luggage at any other
hotel.

I would not stay at this hotel again, I found staff rude and very unfriendly, gone
are the days when your greeted by friendly chirpy Americans.

Stayed for 3 nights 19-22 Dec 08

Clean big and comfortable rooms

Great Buffet breakfast

right on the beach, small but nice pool area

polite and helpful staff

20 min drive from Miami airport

$15 a day parking - which is only by Valet (quite handy though you just dump the car)

only possible downside is its a 40 min walk to Ocean Drive & 20 min walk to Lincoln Rd. these were our main areas for food and drinks

Cab from hotel to Ocean drive costs $7 so not too bad.

If I stayed in Miami Beach again I may stay a bit closer to Ocean Drive

  • Liked — it was all good
  • Disliked — could do with being a bit nearer Ocean Drive
