We stayed at the Riu over Columbus Day weekend post-cruise and could not be happier with our choice. It would have cost 2x as much to stay at the hotel next door, and we wouldn't have had a lovely balcony to sit on to enjoy morning coffee or pre-dinner drink. The view from the balcony was beautiful, and it was nice to simply walk out of the lobby to get to the beach. The pool was very nice, too. The grounds are well kept and the people at the front desk were pleasant & helpful. Timor (I think his name was) always had a smile and a wave for us when we came in. I highly recommend you pay a bit extra for a balcony room. We were in room 936 - all of the even numbered rooms 924-936 will have the same view of the palm trees and ocean from the balcony that we had. Most of the guests at the Riu are Europeans - we didn't encounter anyone else during our stay whose native language was English. But, the international guests made it all the more of a pleasant experience. We did not eat at the Riu, but 2-3 blocks south of the hotel (on Collins) you will find a liquor store, a small grocery store with a cafe in it, an Italian restaurant, and a little Cuban restaurant where we went every morning to get coffee and a 10 ounce glass of divine freshly squeezed orange juice. We enjoyed our coffee and juice on the balcony in the morning while we watched the palm trees sway. In the evening we had drinks and watched the cruise ships go out. It was very relaxing, and easy enough to get to South Beach in the evenings for dinner. Just walk one block over to Indian Creek and pick up a bus on 29th street going to South Beach for $2.25 each way. Coming back, the bus stops right in front of the Riu, as does the Airport Flyer bus for a mere $2.35 trip to the airport (Have exact change for the bus). My only (minor) negative comments are: the toiletries offered did not include shampoo - I had to use the body wash/shampoo combo in the shower to wash my hair. It was okay, but if you are fussy, bring your own shampoo; and, we had to pay $2 a day to use the in room safe - it should be included in the room price. Otherwise, our stay at the Riu was very satisfactory and we'll certainly stay there again the next time we are in Miami. It is an older hotel, and the hallways have some scuffed paint, but the slight deficiencies did not detract from our stay at the Riu. We've stayed in South Beach on previous trips to Miami, and after staying at the Riu, we found we enjoyed the Riu more - quieter and being right on the beach was heaven.

We stayed two nights in the beginning of our vacation. After two weeks and after 6 hotels in Florida can say, that this hotel is OK. The design of the room wasn't my favourite, but is was clean and beds were comfortable.
Valet parking was exellent.
Breakfast was good, they had plenty of different choises, so everyone could find something delicious for breakfast.
Location was perfect. Pool area was very cosy and pleasant.
Staff was friendly.

I have just stayed 2 nights at this hotel. There was 4 adults in our party and we all shared one room as it was such a short say however the room was perfectly adequate in size. 2 double beds and plenty of floor space. Very clean with mini bar and coffee maker.
The hotel was very easy to find. Car valet parking is $23 for 24 hours which we didn't think was too bad. Service for this was very professional and quick.
Reception staff were super friendly and very helpful. Made our check in very personal and staff seem genuinely interested in our travels so far and plans. I had requested a high floor with a sea view and this is what we got. The hotel lobby was large but did have a very musty smell. It was extremely humid so not sure if it was that but it didn't smell particularly pleasant. There was a bit of work being done on our floor too but this didn't affect our stay in any way.
Walk to Ocean drive was around 20 minutes, took us a little longer due to the beautiful scenery!
We also did a trip to Key West for the day and this was an absolute must. Its a long trip, 4-5 hour each way with the hotel pick ups and drop offs but well worth. The journey down there is beautiful.
Would I stay at this hotel again, definitely!
We even got a note from management in our room welcoming us and a 2014 Miami calendar to keep which was a really sweet touch.

Room Tip: Walk to Ocean Drive via the Boardwalk. Makes a lovely alternative to walking down Collins Ave

just got back 11 oct.
we got a room on 7th floor.the room was very good, clean ,spacious and well equipped.we were a little nervious after reading previous reviews but they could not have been so wrong.the hotel was great.on the beach.the staff were very friendly and could not do enough.we booked some trips with the concierge who was very helpful.we went to Key west which was fantastic, only downside was the 4 hour bus trip. Also went on the airboat trip on the everglades(not to be missed). The food nearby was very good and cheap.Maxines near 17th street and Lincoln road on 16th street well worth a visit.the weather was really hot 90 in the day and 80 at night.dont bother taking any jeans as its too hot.shorts are best day and night.once again a great hotel in a great location.

Room Tip: ask for a ocean view room

This hotel had two good things about it. It was close to the beach and the staff was very nice. Other than that I would not stay here again. The food at the buffet was terrible, the rooms were dirty and full of bugs. It was not worth the money that I paid per night.
