A group of six decided it was time to visit Fogo since it is located one block away from where we live and it is always busy. Plans were made and off we went to experience our first churrascuria. Except for me, no one else in our party had been to an authentic Brazilain steakhouse. We were excited and somewhat intimiated by the thought on a meat onsluaght.
When we arrived at Fogo we were seated immediately. Drinks and wine were served promptly. The menu was descrbied and off we went to the bountiful salad bar. The offerings were plentiful and fresh: bright greens, lovely heart of palm, Waldorf salad (reminded me of my childhood), etc, etc. The salad bar was perfectly presented - very clean, very appetizing.
Before we knew it, we were being presented with skewers stacked with various meats. The gaucho style waiters were expert at presenting the paritulcar cuts of meat. Prime sirloin, filet mignon, chicken hearts (my ten year old is still talking about the fact that he ate a heart!), chicken. All of the offerings were presented, cooked and seasoned just right. One person in the party kept their "green card" face up - the pile of meat that accumulated was impressive.
Fogo and other Brazilian type steakhouses are for my taste, more of a special occassion venues. They are fun and create an atmosphere for conversation and some laughs. I just would not find myself dining at Fogo more than once a month - its a bit too much meat and too little in the way of other offerings. That is not a bad thing, it's just personal preference. The restaurant itself is lovely and the location ideal for anyone travelling south of fith in the Miami Beach area.
