went here for miami spice and LOVED the food. the vibe was good on a thursday night. lounge music playing in the background, good amount of people. its very far north. we walked from 23rd (7 blocks), but if you are staying further south, you probably don't want to walk. i recommend the asian chicken wrap, scallops, and creme brulee. its all organic and tastes great. we thought it was a great deal because of miami spice, i am not sure what the normal prices are.

Located directly on the beach in the stylish Palm Hotel on Collins Ave, this restaurant has a unique tropical setting and a chef with superb kitchen skills and imagination. Unfortunately, the service does not rise to the same level and we were very disappointed with our dinner experience last night.

We decided to try the special advertised Miami Spice Dinner menu which is offered by Miami area restaurants in the "slow" season. We use this opportunity to try out new places and also to decide where to impress our out of town dinner guests during the busier and more expensive winter season. Sadly, Essensia was a letdown ! This place has the elements to be a special gem, except for the inept service and ultimately the management.

We arrived at 6 PM on a Sunday evening to a totally empty restaurant. We were led to the least desirable table on the outdoor patio....a teeny tiny table for 2 in "restaurant Siberia", no view, right next to the servers station. And as I looked around, I saw that ALL the 2-tops were located in the least attractive parts of this gorgeous restaurant.

The only tables in nicer areas were tables for 4 and larger. This sends the WRONG MESSAGE....that COUPLES dining out are 2nd class. Most other restaurants find ways of seating couples with tables as nice as those of larger parties. NOT HERE.

Adding to my discomfort was that I was staring down at a tablecloth that was so rumpled and wrinkled as to make sitting there all the more uninviting. Doesn't anyone inspect these things??? All the table linen on the patio seemed to be in similar condition.

I asked the hostess if all the nicer tables for 4 were reserved for the evening (knowing that they couldn't be on a Sunday night in Sept.)....or if she could possibly move us to one of these tables on the patio with a view. She readily agreed.

She then gave us the regular menu and the wine list. NO Miami Spice Menu. We had to ask her specifically for this special menu. This was the ONLY Miami restaurant featuring this special menu where we had to ask for it. All the others offered it immediately with the regular menus. C'mon....if you are going to participate in this special event, do it GRACIOUSLY !!!

The menu is quite imaginative. The chef very talented. We enjoyed all the food which was artfully plated and delicious. We enjoyed the pear salad, orchid salad, red snapper, and coconut tapioca "soup" for dessert. NOTE TO CHEF: The table service does not do justice to your kitchen !!!

The serving staff had obviously received some training but not enough to be let loose on paying customers. In a bored and rote manner, they merely mumbled the lines that they had been rehearsed to deliver. It sounded like it was the first day on the job for everyone. They seemed so unsure about what to do and how to do it. While they went through the motions, there was no polish, no finesse.....nothing to match the sophistication of the food and the outstanding setting. These amateurish attempts at service made us very uncomfortable.

Loud DJ music from a nearby wedding reception also detracted from the mood.

Incredibly, while we were eating our main course, someone decided to clean the window panes on the French doors right behind us and brought out a spray bottle of windex and dirty rags for this chore. MAMMA MIA. !!!!!

Newspaper reviews of Essensia describe excellent service. I can only wonder why this was not the case last night. Maybe the "B-team" works Sunday nights???

I could go on with other descriptions of the service deficits, but this review is already too long. Why do I write? Because this restaurant could have so much great potential if they would bother to fix these problems. However, I would NOT return here. We were just too uncomfortable.
